I have a winner! Sort of.
John Campbell's office returned my call at about 3:00 California time.
Campbell's representative emphasized that the Congressman supports the right of any Congressman to take the oath of office as he sees fit. Campbell's representative was adamant that his Congressman accepts the provisions of the First Amendment. He was particularly strong about how precedents have been set in the past where Congressmen don't have to swear (may affirm), the Ambassador to Israel doesn't have to use the Christian Bible, etc., etc. Very good responses though I may not be communicating them well.

Campbell's representative dodged, a little, his man's attitude about Goode's immigration attitudes. Nevertheless, he said the voters of Virginia chose Goode. He emphasized that many different viewpoints are brought to Congress. Campbell's representative was most definitely opposed to Goode's too many Muslims attitude and quoted "From many, one" for me as descriptive of Campbell's core beliefs when it comes to immigrants. Again, good answers, if I may put a value judgment to them.

I asked for Campbell to issue a public statement regarding his views. This was dodged.

A U.S. Congressman sending bigoted, xenophobic letters to his constituency is not "meaningless crap." If people don't protest things like this, they become acceptable, and bigots like Goode just up the ante the next time around.

Do you really think CAIR orchestrated the response here? That sort of thinking is not too far removed from Goode's own.

Would you be so quick to shrug it off if Goode had said we need to restrict immigration by Jews to avoid a Jewish takeover of Congress? If he had said that, Goode would by now already have given the press conference saying he suddenly realized he needed to spend more time with his family.

For those who say this is a meaningless distracttion, I counter with Rep.-elect Ellison's suggestion that this a perfect opportunity for a little civics lesson for America, a lesson that is badly needed. There are profoundly good reasons for the separation of church and state that the founding fathers understood very well, but that many Americans don't understand.

This story has been picked up by the editorial pages of the Times and the Post. From the Times this morning: "Mr. Ellison, who traces his ancestors in the United States to 1742, has behaved with extreme grace throughout the incident. As for Mr. Prager and Mr. Goode, we appreciate their help in demonstrating how very fast things can get both nutty and unpleasant once the founding fathers’ wise decision to avoid institutionalizing any religious faith gets breached."

This is a wonderful opportunity to shine a bright light on the fact that today's Republican party simply doesn't believe in the Constitution. Contrast the fact that Juston couldn't find a single Repub willing to stand up for the rule of OUR law and bedrock principles with the quick and very clever response of Rahm Emmanuel in both condemning Goode's actions and calling on the President to repudiate this kind of hate speech. Politics at its best.

This is NOT a "waste of time". A federal Congressman elected to pass laws that affect me, whose salary is paid by taxes taken from me, is a racist. He is also a fool, given the nonsensical basis for the scenario he paints as justifying his racism. It appears that the Congressman believes that America is a Christian theocracy, that must be protected from Muslims taking over the House of Representatives. This kind of garbage may be simply laughed away coming from a guy on the street, but not from a federal representative of the people.

Consider the Goode Letter and the Koran as two texts. Which text is more intolerant?

Now consider those who call Goode intolerant. Who is more intolerant, those who object to Goode's Letter or Goode objecting to the Koran?
