Speaker-to-be Pelosi is Anti-Surge
Responding to our question, here's a statement from the incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) on President Bush's idea of increasing the troop level in Iraq:
There are no easy answers in Iraq, but there are wrong ones. I do not support increasing troop levels in Iraq to further the President's current failed course. Americans have called for a New Direction, but the President's press conference this morning showed that he has still not faced reality about Iraq and gave no indication that he is willing to make the changes needed to reverse this disastrous situation. There needs to be fundamental change in our Iraq policy and in the mission of our troop in order for events in Iraq to improve. Our troops should not be expected to be primarily responsible for dealing with sectarian violence associated with a civil war. As long as that remains their task, the situation in Iraq will remain grave.

Must we forever fail to learn the lessons of Viet Nam? I hope leaders like Pelosi will stalll and attempt to spend billions more on either a phoney "surge" simply continuing the failed effort or spending lots more money on the military so he can wage another "preemptive war" on Iran.

Next step? We have to stop funding for the war in Iraq. Two months ago that would have been political suicide; today, I think it would get a more positive reception by the American public. I'd love for any Congressperson or Senator to ask the question first posed by Cindy Sheehan: "For what nobel cause did my son die?". It was apparent in 2004 there was no answer, nor in 2005, but the AMerican public is finally, finally seeing the facts. What really puzzles me is why W continues to pursue this path. Yes, he's not the type of personality that can admit a mistake, but does he not realize he's looking rather...ah...what's the word...stupid? It's got to be tough deciding between looking stupid or looking incompetant. Is this what the W legacy will be?

Doesn't it seem like arguing about whether or not to change troop levels without first discussing the changes in mission that we wish to pursue is putting the cart before the horse?

I heard the President's statements. He's acknowledged, in essence, that Iraq is a failure.
By wanting to increase troop levels, he is, in a sense saying, it just isn't a big enough failure.
The man's standards are radically different from the rest of the country.

Bush's legacy is a FUBAR Disaster and he knows it but he's not smart enough to quit while he's behind. Desperate to reverse the shame he's heaped on his children and children's children (not to mention his self), he yet has the power to as Tim Kane says, make it a "big enough" failure. Someone (us), must take the boys hands off the controls and put us out of his misery. IMPEACH NOW, LEAVE IRAQ ASAP.

Bush isn't stupid. He's deliberately uneducated. He isn't a curious man, by his own admission, and he doesn't read any reports or any newspapers because he has advisors who do that for him, also by his own admission. He's intellectulately lazy. So who is our president in truth? Vice-president Chency working with Karl Rove. A two man junta who have wanted to take over Iraq since Bush 41 was in office. I only hope that our 110th Congress is morally strong enough to do what must be done to stop this blood-letting, beginning with refusing to fund without explanation, full explanation.

As soon as Diane Feinstein and her hubbie move out of their $17m San Francisco home paid for with Iraqi reconstruction no-bids, I'll start to see a glimmer of hope of the troops being withdrawn. However, at this point it "ain't gonna happen". The Dems are up to their eyeballs in corporate donations and war-profiteering and not one fact exists to counter this claim.
