Update: GOP Still Silent on Goode

Still not talking.

Noting that Goode is a member of the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus, I tried the group's chairman, Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO). his spokesman was out of the office, so I sent him an email. Did Goode's anti-Muslim immigration stance square with the position of the Caucus?

(If it does, it doesn't square with Tancredo's personal position on the issue: "The immigration issue has nothing to do with race, ethnicity, religion, or country of origin insofar as I am concerned," he says in an Oct. 3, 2005 policy statement on the site.)

I also left a message with the office of Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK), who's incoming chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC). Keep your fingers crossed!

"Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus, I tried the group's chairman, Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO)"

Would that be Tom "Miami is like a third world country" Tancredo?

I called and left a message for Rep. Frank Wolf of Virginia's 10th District. His aide said she didn't know if he planned to issue a statement. I'm not holding my breath.

Republicans rarely apologize or speak out against one of thier own, after all, Goode is only saying out loud what the rest of them think. Good luck on getting out of the office this holiday season.

You might Rep. John Campbell in Irvine/Newport Beach, CA. There is a fairly large Muslim population in Irvine, and while politics is politics and he bills himself as a Reagan Republican, I've found him to reasonably sensible. You might give him a try. Local office #: 949-756-2244.

Sen. John Warner, R-Va., said he respects "the constitutional right of members of Congress, indeed, of every U.S. citizen, freely to exercise the religion of their choice, including those of the Islamic faith utilizing the Quran in accordance with the tenets of their religion."

He released a statement that was quoted in several news stories today. The full statement might be on his Web site.

Goode didn't make a racist slur. AT all. At most, he made an insensitive remark about the swearing in, but that's it. This level of criticism is over the top.
