Today's Must Read

Despite its incompetence and failures, there was one thing that the administration was always good at: the staged event. But, in a sign of how far their fortunes have sunk, they can't even do that right any more.

From The Washington Post:

There are few places the president could go for an unreservedly enthusiastic reception the day after unveiling his decision to order 21,500 more troops to Iraq. A military base has usually been a reliable backdrop for the White House, and so Bush aides chose this venerable Army installation in western Georgia to promote his revised strategy to the nation while his Cabinet secretaries tried to sell it on Capitol Hill.

The president's handlers did all they could to make it go well. Soldiers were prevented from speaking to reporters in order "to ensure that there would be no discordant notes," as the Post puts it. Bush even made an effort to appear low-key, a tactic, according to his aides, designed "to reflect the serious situation." But, still, it didn't go well.

Soldiers being soldiers, those who met the commander in chief Thursday saluted smartly and applauded politely. But it was hardly the boisterous, rock-star reception Bush typically gets at military bases. During his lunchtime speech, the soldiers were attentive but quiet. Not counting the introduction of dignitaries, Bush was interrupted by applause just three times in 30 minutes -- once when he talked about a previous Medal of Honor winner from Fort Benning, again when he pledged to win in Iraq and finally when he repeated his intention to expand the Army.

Note: Despite the fact that The New York Times and LA Times observed the same restrained reaction, the AP went with the headline: "Bush cheered at Fort Benning."

Any word if any Malkin operatives have caught John Kerry being shunned by the troops yet? That the troops hate Kerry is the real story here.

user-pic

the AP went with the headline: "Bush cheered at Fort Benning."

Of course since AP is the current enemy d'jour, they're the ones who are going to tread most lightly in this context.

user-pic

What's with the AP? Why are they the "enemy d'jour? What do they get by pumping up Bush's image? or is there just some right-wingers in management trying to change Bush's public appearance?

user-pic

Sorry. I assumed that the running battle between AP and Michelle Malkin and friends was common knowlege.

user-pic

The AP is like an umpire after being chewed out for a bad call. He'll be cautious, but just for a few innings. The AP didn't really make any bad calls, but it will tread lightly for a few innings, then get back to real reporting.

user-pic

Fort Benning.... isn't that home of the School for the Americas training of Latin American dictator death squads? And he barely got applause there?

I wonder if his parents will admit they're related now.

user-pic

T me, it's frightening when the core competency goes. The Bush people have never seemed to know what's going on in Iraq, but they've been very effective in manipulating public opinion. Now they've apparently lost even that -- the "surge" is obviously too little, too late, and it may end up being as few as 9,000 troops.

In Iraq during the last week thay've succeeded in angering every single faction, even the Kurds (unless the rumor that they've bought off Moqtada is true, that is).

And they seem to be trying to rescue the situation with an escalation to toher countries. They're obviously just flailing around. No one is left in the administration but Bush partisans.

I really think that we're in late-Nixon territory now, with the difference that Nixon had some staffers with a bit of credibility and good sense, whereas I don't think that Bush does.

On top of everything else, I think that people tend to underestimate how bad it could get. Losing Iraq isn't the worst that could happen.

user-pic

Why should the AP be treading lightly? They were proven RIGHT in the whole Malkin fiasco, while the warbloggers were once again affirmed as empty-headed windbags.

If anything, I'd be looking at this more from the former-AP-reporter-John-Solomon-as-smear-merchant perspective. While they are certainly no Faux News, AP's got the right-wing taint.

user-pic

As a prior serviceman, I know the little talks give before politicans arrive... These troops know what is going on... they know they are being used politically...

This President has never understood that he is the President of the United States and not the leader of the Republican party. He, also, has never understood that the Commander-in-Chief is not a political position in which he can bolster his political position.

His credibility is shot.

user-pic

Well who cares about AP? They have been at it for some time, as has been FOX, Coulter, Limbaugh and the likes but I think it fair to say it aint work'in!!!
Why Bitch? Just sit back and watch your opponents continue to use tools and tactics that do not work. Its fun.

legalized, i guess you do not really read m.m.'s website. she has apologized twice for the picture and her words about kerry. evidently kerry was having a confidential interview with reporters. the photo was shot at an angle where the reporters were not clearly seen. just another right wing neo con example of dishonesty. when your kids are killed either here from terrorists or in the war with all the middle east, remember you had a hand in it by not really questioning what is put under your nose. you are like a football fan who goes rah rah with the cheerleader, believing your team is going to win, even when all the games your team has played, have lost, and some very badly. too bad the rest of us have to suffer for your "blindness". bush is a loser, he has been a loser all his life. he has not succeeded at anything without daddy and friends bailing him out.

user-pic

Our commander-in-chief now reflects an image of incompetence and failure – certainly not the appropriate image to inspire our military to shoulder the additional sacrifice required of his ill-conceived surge strategy. One could almost piety the man so clearly lacking in the basic qualities of leadership were it not for the dangerous game he’s playing with our country’s future. Quoting Goethe, “There is nothing more frightening than active ignorance.”

user-pic

The AP and "real reporting" should never be used in the same sentence. There's biased reporting, and then there's dumb, lazy reporting that manages to get nearly every fact in the first three paragraphs of a story wrong 80% of the time.

That's pretty much the AP's standard. Try paying attention to their stories about subjects you're closely familiar with, first-hand. It's just atrocious, far more often than not.

mamameow,

I know irony is dead and all, but pretty sure legalized was being, you know, ironic.

"I really think that we're in late-Nixon territory now, with the difference that Nixon had some staffers with a bit of credibility and good sense, whereas I don't think that Bush does."

Not true, sir. Bush is rapidly on-boarding those very same Nixon staffers into his own administration!!!

user-pic

Cheney, Cheney, Cheney. Anyone who thinks Bush's incompetence is the story is being fooled by the sleight of hand. Cheney has competent and insanely loyal staff making all this happen.

Bush is a puppet. We have to focus on the real decision maker here, Cheney.

user-pic

I can hear it now: "If you're seen talking with any members of the media, you'll be on a plane to Baghdad so fast it'll make your ears pop."

John - not necessarily, if you look at things from a certain perspective. Josh discusses one of those perspectives here:

http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/2003/0304.marshall.html

After reading this article, you may discover that all this nonsense actually makes sense and is following a little-known but well-defined plan. Scary as hell.

BTW - the security code for this post: "screw" !!!!!!!!!!

Richard - I AGREE! My big question, tho - how do you prevent yourself from giggling at the looming repub internal disaster?

user-pic

You could tell the difference just by looking at the photo the Times ran yesterday. Bush looking strained, the soldiers looking somber or even slightly annoyed.

user-pic

Our man is the new Moloch; arrogant, obstinate Moloch from Crawford.

Look it up in your Funk and Wagnalls.

user-pic

AP = America's Pravda. All readers should be wary and take anything reported by AP with a huge grain of salt.

user-pic

AP has been reporting from the right for quite a while now. Not as egregiously as FOX, no, but still slanted. The Times and the Times are both still slanted to the left. Everyone and every position has a bias, even if they truly are attempting to listen to both sides (people) or present both sides (newspapers, radio, some TV news).
We're not going to change that - some things are better left understood so that we can ignore the possible implications and move on to the definite implications of larger transgressions.

user-pic

Crandell:

"Moloch" (a god who welcomes child sacrifice) shares the same Hebrew root as "melech" (king). Since ancient Hebrew was written without vowel markers, the two words looked the same in print until later scholars started marking the vowels.

There are places in the scriptures where it is very difficult to tell whether the writer meant to say "king" or "god who slaughters children."

Were those writers still writing, they may have trouble making the distinction even now. "Sacrifice" indeed.

Bushco's sheer inepitude has finally permutated to the rank-and-file! Shrub's speech, followed by Gate's lifting of the 24 month ceiling on deployment for Guard/Reservists, were obviously received with the due respect it is due! F**K YOU!! As A twenty-year Vet, I have NO CONFIDENCE in Bush! As Gordon Smith R-OR, said; ...It may be criminal..." Let's impeach!

user-pic

Actually, AP's reporting of Bush's vist to Ft. Benning was not only accurate -- from their vantage point -- but inspiring.

The AP reporter sent to cover Bush's stage-mamaged event actually saw W.'s spiel on the closed circuit feed to Ft. Benning's Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (formerly known as the School of the Americas). There, officer trainees from Guatemala, Honduras, and Colombia unabashedly cheered the President almost non-stop with virtual renditions of "Ole...Ole...Ole" and "G-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-A-L" at key points of Mr. Bush's speech. They were also allowed to talk to reporters -- in Spanish -- before and after the speech. That is, as long as the press members were from Radio Marti.

Hopefully, this will clear up any misunderstandings Bush's appearance may have caused.

It should be noted that none of the current class of officers is going on a tour in Iraq any time soon. Instead, they will be doing internships at Gitmo to complete their course.
