Conyers Presses Gonzales on Blocking Probe
When it rains...
Following up on National Journal's story earlier today, House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers (D-MI) sent a letter (pdf) to Alberto Gonzales asking him to respond to the story's allegation:
"It would be an extraordinary abuse of authority if you advised the President on this matter after learning that your own conduct was to be investigated... The decision by the President to shut down the OPR investigation by denying security clearances to key Department personnel was itself extremely unusual, controversial and, in our view, improper. But the issue of your role in advising the President on this question raises what may be even more serious concerns."

Here we are, not not even into three months of long-overdue Congressional oversight w/r/t this administration, and look and the ton of dust already being kicked up. Over the past week, it's been something new with almost every new news cycle.
We're talking "implosion mode," here. Think this administration can keep this up for another 20-or-so months? It's a bet I don't think I'd take.

That's right Robin, and we're just getting started, there's so much more about to surface. It's time to think about how we get from here to 1/21/09 - with a crippled executive awash in subpoenas in charge? Better that then an unfettered bat-crazy paranoid messianic at the helm, I suppose.
Can we all agree that the sooner this whole crowd is out, the better? That maybe we, Iraq, and the world can't wait for 2009?
I saw Biden's angry speech from the floor. Joe, if you really feel that way, start the impeachment ball rolling. Please.

None of these investigations would have ever taken place if the Democrats hadn't taken back the House and Senate. Since it was largely Rove's job to make sure that didn't happen, it seems to me like it might present two big problems for him now. People in his party are less likely to trust him to come up with defensive tactics, and they might be more likely to throw him under the bus for screwing things up so badly for them.

Good coverage. Good USA timeline. I think we should take it as given that Michael Elston's Feb 20th message - shut up and play ball, USA's, or else - was not just about revealing their purported performance problems.
At least six of the USA's had no documented performance problems. Extensive evaluations of their shops were good to excellent. Surely, Elston's implication was that in an administration whose culture is defined by Dick Cheney and Karl Rove, payback is an art, a commitment, and a love.
Shrub loves to give pain at twice the volume he perceives receiving himself. He takes a verbal gun to a food fight. Cheney never forgets or forgives a slight, from an early bad performance evaluation his first years in Washington to Joe Wilson. Rove has a Japanese sense of time, and Keyser Soze's (Usual Suspects) lack of inhibition about enforcing payback collaterally. No traces, except smoke from the gun and a whiff of paprika, but everybody knows who did it.
Fortunately, McKay and others didn't back down. They may have their own agendas and careers to promote, and most of them are conservative old-style Republicans. But so far, they've shown an integrity this administration used to laugh at. Perhaps no longer.

My deepest fear is that Bush/Cheney will "wag the dog" with an attack on Iran, hoping to deflect the NSA/Gonzales/Walter Reed tornado at the gate. Congress is doing a fair job of keeping the pressure on in many ways, but efforts to tie Bush's hand on Iran aren't front and center.
Even Biden's "off the cliff" remark addressed only Iraq. That "cliff" is nothing compared the abyss that awaits if Bush bombs Iran.
