DoJ Docs: AG Met with Aides before Purge, DoJ Flack Brainstormed on Dismissals

So let's start with what the major papers gleaned from the documents dumped at 7:30 last night. Then I'll return to what people found in the comments.

McClatchy hits all the high points, the main one being, of course, that Alberto Gonzales sat in on a meeting about the firings on November 27 to review the firing plan. The firings occurred ten days later. During his "I take full responsibilty but I didn't know anything about it" press conference earlier this month, Gonzales said "I was not involved in seeing any memos, was not involved in any discussions about what was going on."

The response from a DoJ spokesman is that the meeting doesn't contradict Gonzales: "This meeting concerned the roll-out of the U.S. attorney plan. The information available to us does not indicate that there was discussion at this meeting about which U.S. attorneys should or should not be on the list." Huh. Still seems to me to be a discussion about "what was going on."

There are, of course, other highlights -- an email shows public relations officials from the Justice Department and the White House apparently brainstorming about how to sell the firings to the public.

DoJ's Tasia Scolinos wrote on November 21 to the White House's Catherine Martin, little more than two weeks before the firings: "The one common link here is that three of them are along the southern border so you could make the connection that DOJ is unhappy with the immigration prosecution numbers in those districts."

Other emails between the two show Scolinos optimistic that the purge would go over quietly: "I don't see it as being a national story - especially if it phases in over a few months." Oops.

Her explanation:

Speaking with reporters on Friday evening, Ms. Scolinos said that when she sent that message she had only a fragmentary understanding of the plan to dismiss the prosecutors.

More soon.

"Another department official [i.e. not Ms. Scolinos] said that Mr. Gonzales did not recall the meeting and that his aides had been unable to determine whether he approved the dismissal plan then." (Gonzales Met With Advisers on Dismissals, By DAVID JOHNSTON and ERIC LIPTON, NYT Published: March 24, 2007)

WTF?

Freedom's on the March!!

user-pic

O.T. but David Kurtz just posted about Bradley Schlozman, former deputy chief of DOJ civil rights division. Schlozman is now the "Interim" USA for western Missouri. He replaced Todd Graves.

FiredUpMissouri.com has a great post about Schlozman who may actually be the first PA revision appointment. Oddly enough, I can't access the FiredUp website directly but the Schlozman post is in a Google cache.

I think David, Josh, Paul et al should take a look at the FiredUpMissouri Schlozman post so I pasted the link to the Google cache below.

The post also refers to a Salon story about Schlozman and voter suppression in Missouri that I haven't read yet.

user-pic

It is beyond unbelievable that the AG is such a TOTAL LIAR. Caught in his own lies, he still has no intention of resigning and is as arrogant and beligerant as ever. -- Just like Bush, Cheney, and the rest of the cabal.

user-pic

A big reason for even considering replacing all the U.S. attorneys is to get control of the means of Democratic vote suppression. I believe that when they say a U.S. attorney was not "prosecuting enough 'vote fraud' cases," they mean the U.S. attorney is not willing to go along with tampering systematically with the elections machinery to cause Republicans to 'win' in swing states, places where Republicans are vulnerable, and anywhere that will assist in getting the Electoral College votes in the next presidential election. This is in addition to possibly prosecuting too many Republicans.

user-pic

Doesn't (or didn't) Cathy Martin work for Cheney in OVP and serve as his flack?

Perhaps the question should be: what did the Vice President know and when did he know it?

user-pic

Jim, your harsh accusations are obviously based on little more than facts.

user-pic

Bradley Schlozman update: I read the 3/21/07 Salon story, "How U.S. attorneys were used to spread voter-fraud fears" and, according to Salon, Bradley Schlozman himself was replaced suddenly by John Wood on 1/16/07, two days before Gonzales testified to Congress.

I'm not sure John Wood is much of an improvement over Schlozman. According to the Kansas City Star, Wood is Senator Kit Bond’s cousin. His wife, Julie Myers, is assistant secretary of Homeland Security for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. She is the niece of retired Air Force Gen. Richard Myers, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

A magna cum laude graduate of Harvard law School, Wood has hopscotched around the Washington bureaucracy. He clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and worked for former Missouri Sen. Jack Danforth.

Wood was also a deputy general counsel at the Office of Management and Budget, and counselor to the assistant attorney general.

Another political hack who apparently has never been a prosecutor.

user-pic

If Democrats let this slide, we might as well kiss everything good-bye. How much more proof will Bush and Rove need that they can do anything? A rubber-stamp Republican Congress was bad enough, a pusillanimous Democratic Congress is just as bad.

user-pic

Bushco has always thought that trust in their words had no value - that bones to the right and the rich and the rabid war lovers would keep them in power. Gonzales reminds us of Bush in his most characteristic role - liar.
Bushco operates at a level between 2 year old and 8 year old.
Many politicians assume voters operate at that level or entirely from their reptilian brain.
Most people have an adult side (typically with a sense of humor) that can be delighted by pointing out how juvenile someone is behaving.
It would probably be a relief to many Americans and people abroad if when we are operating out of our adult level - actually started calling Bushco juvenile - lying, cheating, throwing or threatening tantrums, smirking, taking their marbles. Nothing cleanses quicker than telling your neighbor in simple terms that you see the same truth they do. And nothing is a more shared experience than the juvenile behavior we all grow up with. Most of us know how to act like adults. Only the greedy benefit by keeping us acting like children and letting them do the same.

user-pic

DOJ/Atty firings are all to do with the 08 elections. McClatchy has a great piece up about Karl Rove talking about 11 states that could be pivotal for 2008. Funny, they replaced 9 of those attys. from those states.

If you read PNAC, their theory is all about military dominance. This is all about getting set up to steal the 08 elections. What were PNAC’s authors main complaints about Clinton? Defense spending and that he didn’t do enough of it. So of course, this all makes sense now. 2006 elections brought it home to roost that the majority favor Dems. Rove et al have decided that the only way the Neo-Con (military dominance theory will work) is by stealing the 2008 Presidential election - why, I do declare, a nasty Democratic President would wipe out all their hard work these last 6 years.

user-pic

Hmmm... Isn't the Immigration thing what they tried to pin on Lam? That is another proven lie now.

user-pic

Thanks to Lexie for pointing out what I thought was blatently obvious but seems to have slipped past many of the 'brighter' commentators.

While some of the firings have he distinct odor of obstruction of justice (which is the most obvious of the potential crimes in this case), I think we should take a much closer look at the 2008 electoral map to line up the firings with electoral college outcomes. Nice try Karl.

Anyone want to expand on this one?

user-pic

I ran through the latest doc dump and the last scheduled meeting about the USAs was March 6, 2007.

Gonzales held a press conference about the USAs on 3/13/07. I'm not buying that he was not briefed by his staff before the press conference.

Nor am I buying that the DOJ brain trust never met about the USAs after March 6.

Gap.

user-pic

Jim,

Yes, Cathie Martin was in Cheney's office as a press person. That was clear from the Libby trial. However, she moved over to the same position in the White House at some point.

PS - her husband, Kevin Martin, has been an FCC commissioner and is now the chairman.

user-pic

I apoligize Jim, I meant to reply to Phil.

user-pic

Scolinos's November 21 observation of "one common link..." musing is the money quote. Lucky for her they weren't all along the northern border - weak protection against Canadian immigration would have been a tough sell.

user-pic

Waiting in Texas:

That is a frightening prospect to think that more and more vote suppression would be achieved in those states. I remember the hue and cry when Clinton reduced the military, but Al Gore successfully reduced the bloated size of the Washington bureaurcracy also. How does that square with Bush 41 and the Peace Dividend? He reduced military spending also. Were the PNAC out of that loop, or not even active then?

user-pic

We are now living under dictatorship.

user-pic

PNAC first appeared in its earliest forms 91-92, I think. Interestingly though, Bush 41, say what you want about him, he also knew how to work the establishment so to speak. He's not a cowboy like his kid. Also, remember that Bush 41 fired Karl Rove in 91 working on his election.

user-pic

Andrew Thomphon:

You might be on to something here. Although, it would be difficult to prove, shedding light on this might help in understanding the real motive for these dismissals.

user-pic

The AP says of the meeting with Gonzales:

"Six of the eight prosecutors who were ultimately ordered to resign are named in the plan."

Someone who has read through the dump could probably tell us for sure, but I would imagine that top-flight "Bushie" Kevin Ryan was one of those not on the list at this time.

user-pic

Waiting in Texas is a cynic, but I think he is right, The 2008 and beyond elections is what this whole USA thing is about. Pack the judicial branch while you can, all levels; increase the 'gene pool' of Republican robots while intimidating the marginally ethical into dancing to Republican tunes; move up the chain over time--loacl and appellate judges, Supreme nominees---all the while bending the law to the will of the Party. If the Party leadership wants war, unitary executive, secrecy, sabotage of the opposition, coercion of public figures, thwarting of investigations---you name it--- the Party wants it all. Well-oiled, goose-stepping machine indeed.

user-pic

Tasia Scolinos is another one of those who used a non-governmental email address -- her Yahoo account -- as seen in the earlier megadump.

This is all about getting set up to steal the 08 elections.

I'd bet that the plan for 2008 was to run with the 'Immigrants Are Voting!!' scare, riding the Lou Dobbs xenophobic bandwagon. The GOPpers at the recent House Judiciary hearing on voter suppression were all about the immigrants. And the proposed way to deal with the non-issue of non-citizens voting is through ID laws that aid in minority voter suppression.

user-pic

I haven't had a chance to look at all these new WH emails, but are they strictly ones with the WH email address? Is anyone going to enquire (if they are) where are the ones from the RNC email addresses?

user-pic

Following up on visitor's question - there is apparently more confirmation of other email servors being used.

With regard to alternate email servors:

Just a paranoid thought here. But in keeping with the presidential directives allowing torture and surveillance without judicial pre-approval.

1. We now know they've been keeping two (or more) sets of books for memos, emails, etc.

2. So, if these folks were intending to set up alternate ways of communicating, which would subvert the law requiring the maintenance of presidential records, wouldn't we expect to find DOJ producing a directive (for the president to sign) which allows for or provides for this double set of books?

I may be off base about:

3. Could the reference to statistics on "pom" record keeping ("porn" as first supposed - I do not have the exact words or exact reference from the documents) be a reference to 1 and 2? I say that only because they must have had an internal way to refer to the "project" or "program" on memos - to refer to the double set of books - and perhaps statistics related to such?

4. Even if #3 is incorrect, we should still be on the lookout for what I've suggested here - a directive from DOJ authorizing the subversion of the law on maintaining presidential records.

user-pic

Now maybe the FBI can use some of these easy-to-use National Security Letters to get the external emails sent and received by the players in this matter.

user-pic

Brilliant EH. Catch them with their own methods!

user-pic

3 things:

1. Excellent coverage in great detail over at
http://scoop.epluribusmedia.org on the Attorney General folks, including a list of 14 who have never been confirmed. Much biographical/history of the fired attorneys...worth mining.

2. This is more than "just" the 08 elections.
The elections/control of Repub Congress is important to the grander scheme of unifying all of No. America ( the Canada-USA-Mexico thing)
that Bush has, independiently of Congress or anyone else, been working on.
Imagine the money to be made.
( and why is Cheney so very very quiet of late?)

3. The story on Bush legalizing "oversight" via his own political hacks in every Dept. of the Government is breathtaking.
from Robert Pear's Jan. 30 '07 article in the New York Times:

" in an executive order published last week in the Federal Register, Bush said each agency must have a regulatory policy office run by a political appointee, to supervise the development of rules and documents providing guidance to regulated industries. The White House thus will have a gatekeeper in each agency to analyze the costs and the benefits of new rules and to make sure the agencies carry out the president's priorities.
This strengthens the hand of the White House in shaping rules that often have been generated by civil servants and scientific experts. It suggests that the administration still has ways to exert its power after the takeover of Congress by the Democrats. "

Sound just like what Gonzo wanted for the USA's...
The amount of thought and work that went into controlling/taking over the system is staggering...not mention really really scary.
We have not begun to uncover this...

user-pic

Just a thought about Gonzo. If he knew nothing before the firings, why did they have him scheduled to break the news to Kyl and maybe other Senators in their five point plan? Were they going to just spring it on him the morning of Dec. 7? Not likely. It is circumstantial, but indicative of the way things were to go down.

user-pic

The Friday doc dump reflects three phone conversations between DOJ officials and Sen. Pete Domenici on 9/23/05, 1/31/06 and 4/06/06. Interesting?

Also the exchange between Cathie Martin and Tina Scolinas noted in one of the above comments certainly enhances the suspicion that the concern about immigration enforcement was a pretext for the real reason for Lam's removal.

user-pic

I am getting really depressed by this - in previous decades, this would have been an impeachable offense, and would be taken seriously. It's Watergate and Iran-Contra in one, and worse, they are getting away with most of it, even with a newly-installed Congress. A pox upon those who voted twice for dictator Bush.

user-pic

Where are the communications from the new USA's prior to their hiring?

The notes of meetings, calls and Blackberry's between Justice and the then prospective replacement USA's will most certainly reflect expectations of Justice priorities.

Justice surely has paper trails showing that the prospective USA's were told of Justice's expectations about focusing on immigration and office management or perhaps more sinisterly, that public corruption was not so much a priority.

What did these prospective USA's write or say to solidify their bonafides as company men for Bush Inc. prior to their appointments?

user-pic

Does any thinking person doubt yet that we are in the worst struggle for freedom our dear USA has yet seen?

This isn't just about stealing elections, as horrible as that is. It's about fascism and totalitarianism and the end of democracy in this land. Liberty is being stolen from within.

Democrats ought to start using the word UNAMERICAN to describe the acts of these thugs. Citizens will understand that terminology.

user-pic

As somebody pointed out above, here's the smoking email -- DoJ and WH "brainstorming" about the "reasons" to be given for the US Atty firings:

DoJ's Tasia Scolinos wrote on November 21 to the White House's Catherine Martin, little more than two weeks before the firings: "The one common link here is that three of them are along the southern border so you could make the connection that DOJ is unhappy with the immigration prosecution numbers in those districts."

Yeah, you "could make that connection" all right. Sounds truthy.

user-pic

For anyone who is interested in the connection between these firings and the 2008 elctoral map, FireDogLake had an excellent post on this the other day. It's called "The MATH" by Christy Hardin Smith
(sorry, you guys. I don't know how to do the'linky-thingy.')

user-pic

I think the poster who said this was about later elections is right. I was pondering all of this while in the bathroom, how appropriate, and the idea of "sleeper cells" came to mind. Rove & Co are trying to use all levers of government to destroy the ability to dissent. This was a long-term project that makes me wonder; what else are they up to & WHERE? Maybe we should all go over to the offices of the IRS and say hi. I mean, it's always about sex, money and power.

user-pic

A small point I haven't seen mentioned much is in the email from Kyle Sampson regarding the Lam firing. He makes it very clear that the replacemant is to come from outside of her office. Did not see this notation in regards to the hunt for other replacements. This would be the best method of obstructing the ongiong curroption indictments started by Ms. Lam.

user-pic

Quite frankly I've found this Dept. of Justice firings business very complicated, and a bit boring. Thankfully, Jon Stewart keeps us up to date in this video:
http://minor-ripper.blogspot.com/2007/03/jon-stewart-keeps-us-up-to-speed-on.html

user-pic

Ah, yes, minor ripper...it IS all so boring...

Watching two-centuries of slow progress toward individual freedoms, often defended against forces within and without by heavy, heavy cost in blood, being destroyed by a cabal of ego-maniacs egged on by greedy corporate lobbyists and religious fanatics is boring. BORING, I say!

Maybe the next call will be "Aux armes!" in a belated attempt to retrieve our lost freedoms...and that will relieve the boredom.

user-pic

If I were Kyle Sampson, I'd be in a WITSEC safehouse right now, and I bet he actually is! Ooops --

Oh no! Lookee who's in charge of WITSEC -- Sylvester Jones, former undistinguished low level flunky and first Black guy ever promoted to SES level in the USMS -- who has red flags all over that he's a "company man" too. They've co-opting *everything.*

So where's poor Kyle hiding out til next Thursday?

user-pic

Great posts. Great job TPM Muckraker.

I especially agree with qwerty and weedems.

It is time for Democrats to setup a new committee in the House of Representatives, one that should be called, let's say:

The HOUSE UNAMERICAN ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE.

All the Republicans behind this underhanded, secretive COMMUNIST-styled takeover of our democratic government should be subpoenaed and dragged in front of HUAC and asked if they have ever been a member of the Communi,...er, the Republican Party.

Sorry, for some reason I keep getting the Republican Party confused with some type of Stalinistic Communist Party, a totalitarian, authoritarian dictatorship with utterly no morals or scruples where grabbing and holding onto political, economic and military power is concerned.

The neo-con Republicans aren't just the bullies on the playground, they want to steal the playground.

user-pic

So, Gonzales says he doesn't remember a November DOJ meeting held just before the December attorney firings at which their firing was discussed?

Hell, who does he think he is...Scooter Libby?

I just wonder if Gonzales has also forgotten his involvement in the Texas re-districting fight several years?

He was white house counsel at the time, but his Texas Republican friends, Tom Delay and Gov. Rick Perry, pushed through a Republican-friendly/minority-unfriendly redistricting plan for Texas that for some reason reminds me of the U.S. Attorney purge.

And the DOJ's Civil Rights Division under John Ashcroft was involved. Or at least I should say, the career civil rights lawyers at the DOJ's Civil Rights Division ruled against the mid-decade Republican-generated Texas redistricting plan, but were told to STFU. In fact, these career civil rights lawyer's negative judgement about this Republican redistricting plan for Texas was suppressed.

Alberto Gonzales was involved. Karl Rove was involved. By law, the DOJ's Civil Rights Division had final say over any state redistricting plans and how they might affect the voting rights of all U.S. citizens. So, of course, the completely insane and unscrupulous neo-con Republicans told these division lawyers to STFU, essentially telling them: "Quit bothering us. Don't you see that we're in the midst of taking over America and subverting the U.S. Constitution?"...or something like that.

So, Alberto Gonzales the other day said he wants to keep his job as Attorney General so he can keep on protecting the kids. But, we all know the propaganda tricks used by the neo-con Republicans by now, so we must do all that is possible to protect the kids, and our grand-kids, from the likes of Alberto Gonzales, and his utterly corrupt neo-con pals.

re: liberty being stolen from within

You are right 'this is the rise of the Reich' unfolding.' The purge is actually a purge of democracy. We are a nation built on a democracy based on the rule of law. He who controls the law controls the democracy.

Let's not forget that our system of governance relies on the law to make definite judgement. No matter what facts or evidence are available, it is the determination by and under the law that prevails.

Every single American citizen should be outraged and up in arms about the purge, the electoral system being effectively held hostage, and the politicization of the law to decide which cases will be prosecuted.

Karl Rove does not believe in a large majority necessitating who reigns. He always seeks the narrowest margin of majority 51%. That makes it far easier to duped the citizenry into thinking that it was a hard fought challenge but their side won, but they must be ever vigilant as the majority is whisper thin. Pretty soon the MSM, will start talking about how close the 2008 elections will be. Once the public beleives that it is so much easier to uphold any 'voter fraud' charges. Make no mistake however, we have been robbed of our democracy where all rights and freedoms have been vested in the power of the vote.

The scary part is that now that the masses are awakening from our long nationa1 nightmare we have no legal recourse. The legal system is corrupt. We have no legal means to enforce the law, once Guiliani 'perpwalk' is elected in 2008 we will live under martial law. Guiliani will not hestitate to do so as "America's Mayor" to protect the Homeland!!

In America THE LAW RULES..they stole the LAW

MLK said: " Never forget every thing Hitler did in Germany was legal"

So also it will be with the destruction of our American democracy.

user-pic

Send the Mexican packing.

Hey sagacious, maybe you might want to consider that right now even as we speak there are many ,many "David Iglesias " out there in the Federal Infrastructure going to institutional War with BushCo. The investigations are just kicking in full gear now. The Democratic Posse in the Senate & House now have career Federal Employees riding shotgun to make sure that BushCo cannot finish this Orwellian Putsche. Do not think for one minute that the Spooks at the sharp end of the Spear that are out there twenty four seven protecting us will let Turd Blossom take over. The Spooks are extremely pissed about Ms Plame.
The whole career federal employees will keep plenty of info flowing about the misdeeds of the Busheviks !
And also remember that all across the Spectrum of our national Polity We the People are speaking out . Go google ex Congressman Bob Barr's rants about BushCo .( to put that in context remember too that Cong Barr is an ex field officer for the CIA & founding member of the ex officio Impeach Clinton Congressional Committe for lying about a bj- )
No sagacious take a deep breathe , go microwave some Jolly Times - and settle in for how We the People take back our Country -its called Checks & Balances and has worked for around two hundred years - and can even defend the Republic against Turd Blossom !

user-pic

Sounds Familiar, doesn't it?

"Hitler's war in Russia illustrated his total confidence in the occult powers which owned him and his willingness to sacrifice human lives. Hitler believed that his covenant with the occult powers (Pseudo - Christianity) enabled him to control the weather. He felt that the Russian winter would melt away before him as his forces invaded Russia. This belief was based on the occult theory of fire and ice. Hitler would be fire. Russia would be ice (delusional). He boldly sent his armies into Russia with no winter clothes (body armour) and against the advice of his general staff. When the German offensive began to falter and young Germans began to die by the thousands, his generals begged him to order a retreat. Instead Hitler said 'Attack! As to the cold, I will see to that.' When the German offensive was halted within sight of Moscow, Hitler saw it only as a test, requiring more human sacrifice. He saw Stalingrad, however, as the true test, recognizing Stalingrad as the sacred city of the ancient Aryans. He felt that (no amount of human suffering or death was too high a price to pay for its conquest,) that if he were faithful to Satan at Stalingrad, he would be given final victory".

Our entire govt. is paralyzed and will remain so.
They're all members of the same cult, mind controlled, bought paid for with sex, drugs and $. All targets for blackmail. because of it.

Helel was on Stepfanolopous(?)this AM, said Bush radio address yesterday was totally defiant towards Congress. He said he'd never heard anything like it.
