Gonzales Was Reference for Ousted Prosecutor

My, my. Less than a month before a Justice Department official told Congress that U.S. Attorney for New Mexico David Iglesisas was fired for performance concerns, the Attorney General's chief of staff told Iglesias that he could use Gonzales as a reference.

On January 10, Iglesias wrote to Kyle Sampson and asked if he could use Gonzales as a reference, since "I'll be resigning in the next month or so and am looking for a job."

Sampson responded later that day: "You can list the AG as a reference -- not a problem. Good luck!"

Not only that, he was apparently not even on the list to be 'pressured out' until Domenici made a call to Bush.

Hmm.

According to these documents, he was on the favorable list as of January of 2006. But where are the documents throughout the summer? Are they going to release them?

This isn't terribly damning.

Many an employer would make the quid pro quo of giving a good reference in exchange for an amicable parting with someone s/he wanted gone.

Bit of a stretch there Carl. Gonzales is a bit more than his "employer." The AG is not going to allow his name to be used as a reference for just any ASA. Your argument makes sense if it were Battle who was asked for the reference.

If he was fired for poor performance, why would his boss commend him? Unless "poor performance" was just window dressing by the AG?

Iglesias' email doesn't sound miffed or offended by
his having been asked to resign. That could mean that when he wrote it he just thought he was being replaced "at the pleasure of
the President". Did he learn about the performance rationalization later?

Press conference is on.

he's not resigning

"he's not resigning"

wow, THERE'S a surprise. Unless this guy is found in the shower with dead hookers, he ain't resigning. Nobody except Democrats take any blame in THIS Administration.

user-pic

He's starting to repeat himself. Cynically, I'd say he's programmed for talking points but the message is that he's responsible and the questions stop there. He's maintaining that Sampson resigned because he bungled the firings, and that the USA's are swept up in the 110,000 other DOJ employees.

user-pic

...aaaaaaaaaaaaand he cuts it short and makes his getaway.

user-pic

wow, look at the time. my wife's gonna kill me. bye!

user-pic

What a sorry excuse for a human being, let alone AG. I'm thinking of cutting and running like Halliburton but my dollar has been devalued by these chumps to such an extent it is worthless. We have to have regime change very soon.

user-pic

Libby covered ffor Cheney, and resigned.
Sampson covered for Gonzales, and resigned.

Ahem...Mr. Spector??? We are waiting.

user-pic

They hired you to do a job. Just don't be any good at it.

Like everybody else in this cornhole admin...

user-pic

If I were a betting person, I'd give you odds that Rove would know how to get rid of any dead hookers found in showers.

They would have to be Republican showers, of course.
