More Trouble for Gibbons
The Wall Street Journal continues (sub. req.) to make life miserable for Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons. The paper first reported a month ago that Gibbons was under federal investigation for improper gifts (possible bribes) from a defense contractor.
Now the paper reports that Gibbons' business as a legislator was intertwined with a second defense contractor:
The wife of Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons was hired as a consultant to a defense contractor at the same time that her husband, who was then a member of Congress, helped the company get funding for a no-bid federal contract.Dawn Gibbons got about $35,000 in consulting fees in 2004 from Sierra Nevada Corp., of Sparks, Nev., the company said. Mr. Gibbons, a five-term Republican who served on the armed services and intelligence committees, sought funding that year for Sierra Nevada for a $4 million contract to develop a helicopter radar-landing system.
If this seems like déjà vu, it's because the role of wives has been key in the Jack Abramoff investigation. Abramoff often selected lawmakers' and staffers' wives for busy work --- one former staffer, Tony Rudy, has pled guilty for accepting bribes from Abramoff in the form of consulting work for his wife.
There are more than shades of similarity here. Gibbons has the same defense lawyer as Abramoff: Abbe Lowell. And Lowell tells the Journal that Mrs. Gibbons "had a pre-existing relationship" with the contractor that began long before Mr. Gibbons was elected to Congress and had "no knowledge" of the federal contract. Just a coincidence.
Now, there's another major revelation in the Journal story, one that touches on the U.S. attorney scandal. John Wilke reports that "a federal grand jury in Washington has begun to issue subpoenas for documents, according to witnesses contacted in recent weeks."
A lot of the suspicion over U.S. Attorney for Nevada Daniel Bogden's firing has centered on the assumption that it was his office leading the investigation against Gibbons. Not the case, reports Wilke: "Mr. Bogden wasn't involved in the Gibbons probe, which was initiated by prosecutors in Washington."

Well, maybe now we know why Daniel Brogden was fired.

I'm not sure why these guys can't help themselves for such stupid small money crap. Maybe it's because they are helping themselves.
It just makes me feel bad that someone who uses drugs or gets into a scrape with the law because of a difficult life situation gets hammered while politicians with the world at their feet never get punished.
Maybe capital punishment for public corruption is the answer. It's a deterrent, afterall.

I too find it astonishing what kind of chump change it takes to buy these people off. You can't get a top of the line Mercedes for $35,000. Maybe you could get a year's membership in a decent country club, but that is about it.

It's a retail business for crooks like Gibbons, is why. Volume, volume, volume. Make way for your next cell mate, Duke.
code word: profit. seems appropriate.

In Nevada, there's a lot more up for grabs than this "small money crap." That's just what he got caught on.

This is the same story we saw in California with Rep. John Doolittle (why ANYONE would vote for a politician named "Doolittle" is beyond me. I think that they get excited by the fact that they are cheating the American public and breaking the law. I am beginning to think that publicly financed elections might be something to consider. Something has got to change here!

Relative to other news I've read recently, I wonder if it's only Mrs. Gibbons that thinks Gov. Gibbons has changed. I'd imagine she doesnt mind what he does since she's busy steering U. S. taxpayers money toward earmarks for defense contractors at 35,000 dollars a whack. Small wonder that the focus was and is on Bill and Hillary Clinton's personal relationship and real estate development investment hopes of more than a decade ago, when on the eve of the gubernatorial election in Nevada Mr. Gibbons was enjoying what he apparently interpreted as a sure thing "gift" of a very drunk club dancer in a bar, from his unsavory drinking buddies, whom he proceeded to paw, molest, and warn in an intimidating way in a parking garage he followed her to as she left the bar. As usual it's expected by the media and it's unbalanced "operatives" that democrats should appear and remain unnaturally devoted and wholesome while Republicans can lie cheat steal whore and intimidate anyone they want to. Whoever said money corrupts was certainly right in the case of the Republican Party because in a matter of a decade and a half the whole concept has been eaten away from inside. Rotten to the core, the one stop shopping government who wants to run everyone's life and dominate everyone's choices in good ol U.S. of A.

part of the problem with all this is that these guys don't get paid enough. Sure I realize that they are serving their state/country but salaries have to change a little too.
that being said I'm a consultant and would love to lick some stamps for $50k. Email me if anyone knows of any governors looking for a good time!

So we should be expecting the DC U.S. Atty to be fired any day now, right? Poor performance and all?

With the resignation of the FBI local head in San Diego, and more controversies involving USAs and Repub politicians, it's time for an independent prosecutor to take over any number of investigations from the DoJ to remove any appearance of further political meddling by the WH beyond this point.

The problem is not who is in charge - Republicrats or Demicans - the problem is the Federal government having grown so enormous, so powerful, so vast in scope that it is permeated by thousands of quid-pro-quo arrangements that cannot even be kept track of.
The entire basis for elections is that congressman bring home the bacon for the people financing their campaigns. Bribery. Then we express shock when they do just that. What is the difference between putting cash in a campaign and cash in your hand? Not much, since you can pocket the campaign money anyway.
So I guess the upshot is he needs to be smarter about how he takes his bribes.

Jeez---couldn't they even manage to fire ALL the US Attorney's investigating Republican corruption?

Part of the problems also is State dependencies on Federal monies. Once you start the handouts, you can't stop. If you unplugged that source of funds from the Federal government to the home districts, that might short-circuit that whole vicious cycle.
But, then it would probably just relocate to the State level once the States adjust to the new reality and the Fed (theoretically) stops sucking the revenue from the States. It might be a little better but it wouldn't go away.

>>> I'm not sure why these guys can't help themselves for such stupid small money crap.
In Gibbons' case, it's because he's quite possibly the stupidest son of a bitch to ever to draw a breath while on the public payroll in Nevada.
And, given our tradition of stupid sons of bitches in elected office here in the Silver State, that's saying something.
Before his election, I referred to him as, "Duke Cunningham LITE," but now he's just, "the Empty Flight Suit from Reno."
This clown's only qualification for public office appears to be his residence in the pockets of Casino bosses and Mining magnates and his ability to drive a McDonnel-Douglas Phantom II.
Coverage of his current contretemps is noticably thin in the pseudo-conservative LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, which pushed him on us with the shameless vigor of a pimp in a Borsalino hat.
Sad to say, I have to buy the Nazi rag WSJ to find out what's happening in my own state because the Local Nazi Rag is falling down on the job...
If Gibbons were to shoot someone on camera with a pistol and Hillary Clinton were to break wind audibly in public at the same moment, which event do you think would be extensively covered by Nevada media and which would be buried below the fold, two pages behind the obits, with the tire ads?
We got the governor that a majority of us deserved.
GIBBONS JOKE: A Las Vegas Metro cop pulled Gibbons over in his Gibbonsmobile and gave him a Breathalyzer test.
He blew a 38DD.

According to open secrets.org, Jim Gibbons funneled nearly $93,000 into Dawn's consulting business between Aug 2003 and Dec 2004
Suppose that was to keep her quite about his womanizing in Washington???

Hopefully those commenting on this situation
could at least get their FACTS straight ...
And especially, those who LIVE in Las
Vegas.
The Lady who was mauled, propositioned
and threatened by Baboon Gibbons
Is Chrissy Masseo = she is NOT a "dancer",
but rather a very nice person and single
MOM, who works as a cocktail waitress at
the highly upscale WYNN Hotel/Resort.
SHE was not "very drunk" that night (Of
all dates = Friday 13) but Gibbons and
his (ghoulish) 'booster' Sid Rogich had
been boozing it up at a local steakhouse
on Flamingo, and Chrissy admits, some other
women and herself had a day off and were
there having a few, also.
Gibbons assault was BLATANTLY covered up
by utterly baldfaced LIES about there
being "no video tape" in the parking
garage camera = then WEEKS later ...
guess what?
Suddenly there WAS a tape = however (oh
dear) = it showed NOTHING (Including, NO
people coming in and out of said garage,
on a hugely BUSY Friday night ... how
unlikely ... just a CAT running by).
GOON squad 'sheriff' Bill Young called
Baboon Gibbons (and his handlers) after
Chrissy filed a criminal complaint.
Imagine!! As Chrissy's lawyer pointed out
later (on television) = a SHERIFF calling the SUSPECT to
INFORM him his VICTIM has filed a complaint !
This nice Lady had bribery attempted upon
her (NO dice) = then ... when that failed
miserably = her CHILD and her own person
threatened with bodily harm.
THIS case is far from over = and anyone who
wishes to ADD anything they know about
the case
Should send it to (the wonderful) Josh
Marshall at Talking Points; he and his
excellent NEW hires have kept right on TOP
on this BUM.
His wife (Dawn = should be named Midnight,
She's got quite the black HOLE for a memory)
IS truly frightening looking, up close (But
then = Gibbons could give the Crypt Keeper
a run for his money).
Much of Nevada is in fact DEMOCRAT leaning
(not just the Harry Reid fans, either) but
There is an 'element' inside Downtown Las
Vegas that STINKS of Rethug backgroom deals.
MOST of Las Vegans (such as my wife and I,
both Physicians) surely did NOT
"Get the Governor we deserve"
That could possibly be Bob Miller (D) = but
this was years ago.
Perhaps some people didn't care for Dina
Titus (all the misogynists at least) but
GOD knows, she stood head and shoulders
above GIBBONS. This sorry sob is going DOWN.

Great Muckraking, Paul! What readers may not know is that Microsoft Corporation lobbyist and lawyer Jack Abramoff (at Club Fed Hyattsville, MD - Inmate number 27593-112) led "Team Abramoff" - about ten other members of his team to lobby for Microsoft Corporation.
Microsoft's team, which collaborated closely with former Rep. Tom DeLay, among others was able to procure beneficial changes to special visa legislation in 1996, 1998, and 2000. Microsoft spent about $20 million during this period on so-called lobbying expenses - and more on campaign finance "contributions." All of this money represents "things of value."
The benefit to Microsoft since 1996 from these "official acts" is measured in $ billions. The harm to experienced American citizens is in the trillions of dollars as the careers that they earned degrees in - and had years of job experience - were destroyed. Pliant and inexpensive "fresh young blood" from India and Communist China was substituted for American citiens equals the "Abramoff Visa!"

Gibbons found work for his wife, what's the big deal? - just a lucky con-winkie-dink that the $93,000 came from businesses needing Jim's "help" . . .
It's the Republican Christian ethic:
"God helps those that helps themselves"
To which my Uncle added:
"And God help those caught helping themselves . . ."
