Elston: Just Passing A Couple Names Along
The Washington Post reported this morning that Michael Elston, chief of staff to the deputy attorney general, had suggested five U.S. attorneys to be fired in November of last year, just a month before the firings.
Now Elston's lawyer is saying that you got him all wrong. Elston didn't mean for those U.S. attorneys to be fired. No. He was just passing along some names suggested to him by others. Totally different. From The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review:
"At no time did Mike ever believe that any of the U.S. attorneys mentioned in the Nov. 1 e-mail should be dismissed," Driscoll said in a statement. "To the contrary, Mike's view is that the five U.S. attorneys mentioned in the e-mail are among the department's best."...Elston simply passed on the names suggested to him by others after he was asked in October to find out if concerns existed about any U.S. attorneys that top Justice Department officials were not aware of, according to Driscoll.
"Mike did what was requested of him, and forwarded the names that others had suggested," Driscoll stated. "...Mike recommended that they not be added to the list of those whose resignations would be requested, and to his knowledge, they never were."
You can read Elston's email here. Funny, I'm not seeing "Don't Fire These Prosecutors" in the subject line (actually, it's "Other Possibilities").
Note: Elston's suggestions, remember, were the most curious -- including Mary Beth Buchanan, Pittsburgh's U.S. attorney, who's very close to the department leadership and was even consulted on which U.S. attorneys should be fired.

This kind of crap, whether it was legal or not, should be enough to demand the resignation of everyone involved in the operation -- i.e. everyone whose name appeared on one of these emails.
Beyond that, the House and Senate Judiciary committees should be looking for patterns of obstruction of justice, perjury, anything which could be used to put these thugs in a maxmum security Federal penetentiary for a long long time.

Right. He wasn't part of the sleazy scheme. He was just an ignorant stooge. OK. Good. This is perhaps the single overarching hallmark of this corrupt administration...that the best defense anyone can muster is that they are incompetent and uninvolved.

Is there any way the Judiciary Committee can just bring up all the big DOJ witnesses at one hearing, like they did with the baseball players during the steroid thing? It would be great to see Gonzales, McNulty, Elston, Goodling, and Sampson sit there while the Committee asked them, "Okay, whose idea was it to fire Iglesias? McKay? Bogden?"

*That* would be a sight to see, provided that someone will not be on "vacation."
And I say skid-marked Sampson and McNulty flank AbuG with a life-size box of kleenex next to Goodling.

When a lawyer lawyers up and thereafter speaks through his lawyer, you know the lawyer has a guilty conscience, and knows he was knowingly involved with knowingly violating the law.
SC = screw. As in, Screw you, Elston: you're as obvious a liar as Bushit himself.
A tad off topic: I can't stand Bushit's voice; even more so, can't stand to look at him. But I did watch the clip of him "answering" the question about the Comey testimony re. his effort to strong-arm Asscrafty. Look at his face, and listen to his stumbling, and the stress in his voice: He knows he did it; he knows he's guilty; and he knows he's caught being the so-obvious vicious little prick he's always been.
SC = screw. As in, when you screw We the people contrary to the Constitution, Bushit, you screw yourself.

How does one show up at work on Monday knowing that a half a dozen angry lawyers found out on Friday that you offered their boney asses up as shark bait months before without saying boo to them before doing so?
Talk about stainless steel cajones (or a skull full of concrete). Elston better buy mugger-mirrors for his glasses and always stand with his back to the wall. I thinking dead man walking . . .

Person on list: "Douchebag."

Nice Elston quote:
"What was particularly disappointing to me about the on-going debate is the assumption that the Justice Department would misuse or abuse these new tools. In my experience, the federal law enforcement community is full of hard working, honest people with integrity, who believe passionately in the Bill of Rights. I am confident that we will reach the right balance between what we need to do to keep the country safe and what we need to do to protect our constitutional rights. In the course of public debate over the “sunset clauses” of the Patriot Act, statistics will come out as to how current investigative powers are used and any alleged abuses of those powers. I don’t think there will be many actual examples of abuse. Frankly, those of us in law enforcement simply have so much work to do that we don’t have time snoop through the records of law-abiding citizens. In fact, Senator Dianne Feinstein, a California Democrat, stated during a Senate hearing two years after the law went into effect that she had “never had a single abuse of the Patriot Act reported to me. My staff e-mailed the A.C.L.U. and asked them for instances of actual abuses. They e-mailed back and said they had none.”

So -- the details of what the concerns were about these individuals have either been redacted or were too sensitive to put down and he trusted Kyle to read his mind and realize that he wanted these folks kept or giving evidence to Kyle was unnnecessary because Kyle wasn't tracking it any way?
Unless a whole lot besides names was redacted this doesn't make sense?
What were the concerns and were they about anything more than these USAGs doing their job properly?

How does one spell "absurd"?
What was Mr/s. Consensus' job title? Or, rather, titles -- s/he was obviously a workaholic who wore many hats all at the same time.
I know how to find out: explore the DOJ for the room with the highest ceiling: that's where s/he had to work so as not to damage that stack o' hats.
Or look for the friendliest person there -- one who is so affable and friendly s/he always agreed with her/himself about everything.
And an expert in groupthink.
Probably took 5 hour lunches . . .
SC = great. As in, DOJ official Consensus had the greatest of circumfrance, so probably had to work out of doors.

I'll confess that I have mixed feelings which clash with each other: Should he stay, or should he go?
I'd like to see him stay, and thus continue to inflict damage on the Bushit gang.
But I'd like to see him gone, so the road is cleared of the road kill he is for the impeachment humvee between We the people and Bushit, et al.

didn't we have a name for the cowards who broke and squaeled in the 1950s ???

I just read the e-mail after the one linked -- Kyle Sampson's "plan" for the firings. It says the AGs are to be told that interims will be in place as of Jan. 1. I'm sure people have asked this, but do we know who these interims are? Did they? If they are getting rid of people so that they can, for instance, more aggressively pursue voting fraud, then presumably the interims they have lined up know the program -- surely these are the ones who could really deliver the dirt. Is anyone tracking them down and asking?

But the question now is, people where suggested (and sometimes added) to the list for reasons that where not part of the stated criteria (i.e. bad performance). These reasons where the opposite of the stated criteria. What proof do you have, Mr. No Confidence, that you can still sit there and say that 'none where fired for improper reasons.
TO REPUBLICANS: With Mr. Elston's statement, there is now, no doubt, that the 'process' was BROKEN.
I never imagined that they would fuck-up even the 'process' cover story. Keep it up Gonzo, you'll take BushCo down yet!

I personally think that we are over-reacting to this tidbit, because I see no evidence that any of the people named by Ellston ever appeared on any "list" kept by "the listkeeper" Karl Sampson.
That being said, I have no objection to making a big deal out of this, since the media refuses to cover the most relevant and damning facts, any story that focuses on the USA scandal is good news.

Maybe I'm not remembering right, but isn't this the dude that made the threatening phone calls to the fired prosecutors? "If you go public, we'll make you sorry" -- sort of like Wolfie without the four-letter words?
Um, why then is this guy's lawyer real believable here? Maybe he just threw some names over the fence, but he was a willing enforcer once the deed was done.

Delightful comment by Cummins about Mary Beth Buchanan.
As for how the tables could have turned on her, Cummins said he's only certain of one thing: "Her name did not get on that list because of any performance review, because there never was any sort of performance review."

Let's not discount the ire of the jilted U.S. Attorneys. Stealing votes from the uneducated and unwitting is one matter; impugning the personal integrity of elite federal prosecutors is another.

This is VERY warm, IMO.
As it turns out, the DoJ cleaning service employs a number of limited-travel specified work permit green card European émigrés, including one Nemo Consensualius, ethnic Parsi & lately resident of the Erutria - who enjoys with political refugee status in the U.S. deriving from the unfortunate confluence of
- his employer's decision to send him to Upper Egypt to lead a work crew on a farmland irrigation project,
- his status as recording secretary in his hometown chapter of the Wilhelm Furtwängler Society, &
- his act of Zoroasterian Charity in lending to a stranger
- who as fate had it turned out to be Nobel laureate Egptian novelist Naguib Mahfouz
- the 35 piasters Mahfouz was short for his purchase of a beverage during the intermission of a 20th anniversary revival of the late Egyptian playwright Tawfiq al-Hakim's The Fate of a Cockroach at the Ali Murwah's Outdoor Theatre & Cafe in the village of Musha on the edges of Qaha, Asyut Governate, Eqypt.
The locale of the act of charity played a role in this drama. The Asyut Governate is known chiefly for its high yield agricultural produce. However - as Qaha real estate speculators know only too well - the associated village of Musha is notorious for being the birthplace of leading modern Salafist [a.k.a. Muslim jihadist - or more precisely anger management-challenged Islamic bullie-ism] polemicist Sayyid Q'utb.
Q'utb's {1] social awkwardness plus
[2] his inability to master the nuances of the two prevalent American sporting activities which dominated the City of Greeley Colorado's social scene between WWII & Vietnam:
baseball - with what seemed to him a definitely Masonic geometry & impenetrable set rules - plus the blasphemous ritual adjusting of the genitals in preparation for each swing of the bat, and
football - in which it appeared to him the object of the game was for players to seek to savage each other to possess & once acquired to fondle the skin of an unclean animal, then transfer the blasphemy so acquired by directly application to the posterior of one or more of one's own team - or in the case of a few of them to an area located between a teammate's legs
- while on a student visa studying at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley
- home of the Big Sky Conference Bears
[The baseballing & footballing Bears are known as the "Ball Bears" & the school mascot is "Klawz" Von Bearclaw. As the school website explains: "Bears are very spiritual creatures that depict the raw purity of nature".]
led to him spend entirely too much time alone with the Q'uran -
which when combined with [3] his constantly priapic state[a function of youth & the laws of Nature]plus
[4] a fateful lost weekend
[during which he found himself unable to take his eyes off the students' residence lounge TV during a Mae West retrospective]
so altered his brain patterns that it led him to re-conceive the Prophet Mohammed's Summah
[or summary of dictates to him by the Middle East desert-dwelling supernatural omnipresence Al-ilah]
as realized in his book Al-'adala al-Ijtima'iyya fi-l-Islam
[loosely translated as: The Orthodox Muslim's Approach to Achieving the Ideals of True Islamic Justice in a Mixed Social Milieu comprised of a minority of Believers amidst a virtual haboub of Depraved Fornicating Infidels ie. Earth].
On returning to Egypt in the early 1950s Q'utb published a pre-electronic 'blog' of Salafist agitprop & literary criticism
& in the context of the latter stumbled on then came to provide critical support for the works of the then-obscure Egyptian novelist Mahfouz
- particularly his allegorical novel Children of Gebelawi
[for which he was declared by many in traditional Islam a "blasphemer" for failing to make a convincing case for Muslims to draw a distinction between the standards of his own personal faith & standards of conduct on the one hand & two propositions on the other:
[1] that since the Islamic God is the only God
["There is no god but God/Allah & Mohammed is his messenger"]
& since the teachings of Islam were revealed to the Prophet some five to six hundred years AFTER the original versions various books of the Jewish Old Testament & the Christian New Testament came to light,
then the God of the 14 million Jews
must be the same God of the 2.1 billion Christians
& must be the God of the 1.4 million Muslims
& by extension [plus the arc of time] must be
- the God of the 12 million Christianic Mormons
[who feature polygamy - tho now supposedly suppressed & certainly denied - & the presumably-related Family Fun Night]
& to a substantial extent the God of the 8 million non-squirrel [as opposed to non-squirrelly] Scientologists
[whose own Mohammed the equally late L. Ron Hubbard
- otherwise the author of a string of muscular tho humorless homophobic fictional works -
added to the lives of its followers [& at least some of its squirrels] spread unevenly over the globe
[with largest contingent being located in the former West Germany, presumably due to the concurrent resurgence in recreational channeling of the late lamented GW Bush prototype Adolph Shicklgruber]
an Emily Litella-like hodge-podge of Christianic biases & post-Industrial concepts Hubbard cobbled together in a system dominant by the major psciences - prescience pseudoscience & popscience] - cobbled into to what its membership refer to as the Study of Truth
[tho in essence more a Glance of Truthiness]
the chief positive social contributions of which to date appear to be:
[a] providing an Ornothology for the inattentive in distinguishing between
[i] science fiction as an expression of the human spirit through art
- such as by Kilgore Trout [author of Venus on the Half Shell & constant companion to the recently deceased Kurt Vonnegut],
and
[ii] pseudoscience fiction as a means
(a) to enrich the days of the superficially intriguing yet spiritually empty
[like diminutive American fabulistic movie star & putative actor Tom Cruise - a believer - & diminutive American fabulistic lawyer & putative national security intelligence analysis - & convicted perjurious liar - Irving Lewis "Scootzie" Libby]
or
(b) to enrich informational or moral gaps in the consciences of the superficially thoughtful but essentially ignorant
[like Republican National Criminal party torture promoter Mitt Romney]
& is otherwise distinguished for producing such an oddball group of rejectionists
[the writer with the soul of a bug William S. Burroughs - the soul poet Leonard Cohen - the founder of the most soulful of the personality sculpture fads est Werner Erhard - the developer of the most soulful software Earthlink ISP Phillip Gale (who chose Hubbard's birthday to make the ultimate statement) - the goddaughter of soul Chaka Khan - the Memorex of soul Gloria Gaynor - the fakefather of soul singer Lou Rawls - with the death of James Brown the undisputed heavyweight soul singing champion of Earth Van Morrison - the comedian of the soul-less Jerry Seinfeld - possibly the only living American with less soul than Vice President Cheney albeit a superficially more-compelling argument for the existence of evil personified Charles Manson]
- most certainly the God of millions of assorted Smugs - Falwellians & Robertsonians & Dobsonians & other reflexively intolerant Christianic illiteralists
[who have succeeded in - restoring mush to the study of law - converting science into a belief system by denying the reliability of objective evidence - filling the gaps in the human genome with transfats - restoring the illusion of political power to America's most ignorant gullible manipulable selfish irresponsible & resentful - all while substantially moving the bar for the average elderly Caucasian's ability to wipe out all records set by legendary Russian weightlifter Vasily Alexeev].
About the same time the CIA entered into a secret cash-for-intell-&-service arrangement with the Eqytian Secret Police, under which the ESP would provide the CIA with leads to those credibly accusable of being followers of al Qaeda bighead Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri plus special interrogation services for selected foreign nationals, but which by the time of the revival of Cockroach had evolved into the ESP passing on the relentless pressure the CIA heaped on it to produce 'names' to - among other Egyptian government agencies - the Eqyptian Tourist Police -
whose paid informant Ali ben Ginbarat noted that act of charity by Consenualius
& in an effort to put a little couscous on his family's kitchen table chose to report same as a reportable intimate "contact" with a Q'utbist insider.
It appears that Consenualius later had the good fortune to be rescued from rendition by a timely intervention
& sponsorship into the U.S. to avoid the repetition of any further such episodes,
[attributed by some to agricultural analyst Amir Pervaiz - coauthor with fellow Winrock Int'l employee AJ DeBoer of the seminal study on Upper Nile grains Economic Analysis of On-Farm Feed Resource Development in Egypt]
whereas on entry into the US the actual spelling of his name was given the kind of dismissive disrespect which has characterized the U.S. Immigration Service since the 1890s,
resulting in his entry into the U.S. as Nemo Consensus.
& on his late night rounds at DoJ HQ clearing excess paper left on boardroom tables swept up the memo attaching the list of US attorney's to be dismissed,
then later while feeding the shredder happened to read the list & perceived he was mistaken in believing it to be refuse
- since it so obviously was an "action" memo -
so put it into the "IN" boxes of the first addressee - one Paul McNulty
which is how the names came to McNulty:
by Consensus.
I fully expect Attorney General Alberto Gonzales will be making the appropriate announcement to this effect in response to the very next question he is asked on a public appearance.
