Goodling and Lady Justice: The Original Cover-Up

From National Journal's Inside Washington column (not available online):

Psst! Sources tell us that none other than Monica Goodling, former aide to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, was responsible for draping over the ample bosoms of the Art Deco statues in the Justice Department's Great Hall during the reign of the prim John Ashcroft. The coverings were removed, accompanied by a sigh from an appreciative public, in 2005 ...

A true believer. She will go down with the ship.

user-pic

After reading this, I'd REALLY like to learn that the very unlikely possibility of an affair between Ashcroft and Goodling is true.

user-pic

Ugh. That's about right.

user-pic

are those the same statues ed meese had covered too?

code phrase: most suspects are guilty

user-pic

I just cannot help myself.

A true believer. She will go down with the ship.

Naaaaahhh. I won't say it.

user-pic

Can the taxpayers get our money back?

"The department spent $8,000 on blue drapes that hide the two giant, aluminum art deco statues, said spokesman Shane Hix. For aesthetic reasons, he said, the drapes were occasionally hung in front of the statues before formal events. The department used to rent the drapes, but has now purchased them and left them hanging.....

Hix said the Justice Department bought the drapes to avoid having to rent them every time the agency had a formal event. The drapes cost about $2,000 to rent.

He also said Ashcroft was not involved in the decision.

"The attorney general was not even aware of the situation," he said. "Obviously, he has more important things to do."

The symbology between Truth and Falsehood of the Bush's DOJ and its Justice statute brings Joel Mabus's lyrics about the Naked Truth to mind. http://www.joelmabus.com/288_lyrics.htm#truth

. . .
'Cause a pretty little dress can cover up a lie,
But Truth goes naked - she's got nothin' to hide.
. . .

It looks like Goodling and Gonzalez Gang had plenty to hide.

user-pic

Well, you were pretty certain isn't wasn't a man that issues with the bronze boobies....

user-pic

I want to say it too, but....

user-pic

And, pray tell, who were they renting the drapes from at $2,000 a pop of taxpayer money? Which GOP events company in DC got that bid?

user-pic

Will she go down with the ship because she's a true believe, or she doesn't know any better, or both?

You don't have to be a blind conservative not to see it, just an ignorant one to deny it.

user-pic

Oh yeah, fact check for National Journal: the bosoms really are not that ample. They're actually pretty dainty. See the photo from USA Today.

user-pic

There's a lot I didn't like about Ashcroft but he looks better all the time by comparison. So now it turns out he wasn't the prude either...

user-pic

someone needs to "get some action"

user-pic

Good God, think what these people are accomplishing. They're actually making ASHCROFT look good. Maybe they deserve all their medals after all.

user-pic

Sorry, way off topic here, but seriously, can you get an underwear model that looks less like Dana Perino for the ad that runs in the middle of the page. That just creeps me out.

"The department spent $8,000 on blue drapes that hide the two giant, aluminum art deco statues, said spokesman Shane Hix.."

Bit of trivia, Shane Hix, a Georgia Tech grad, now works for Gov. Sonny Perdue:

"Shane Hix, IM 00, is deputy press secretary. Hix joined the staff during Perdue’s transition from governor-elect to Georgia’s leader in January. After graduating from Tech, Hix joined the Bush administration as a press assistant at the Department of Justice and moved to the Republican National Committee last May as assistant press secretary. At Tech, he was a member of the College Republicans and chaired the organization in 2000."

user-pic

Monica L. and Monica G.
Blue dress. Blue drapes.
Both at the center of a presidential controversy.

Coincidence? I think not.

user-pic

Let the might bosoms soar!
BTW, does anyone really think Goodling will tell the truth whether she has immunity or not? Goodling's one of the truest of the true believers. (Which means that everything she says is probably false.)

user-pic

Something doesn't add up here for me. Didn't Ashcroft cover up the "bosoms" back in 2001 or 2002? Wasn't Ms. Monica still in law school, or at least doing her stint in oppo research at the RNC then?

Maybe I have my time line off.

user-pic

I wonder if she keeps her own dainty bosom covered always. Methinks not. I'll bet the little harlot loves to drop them like hanged men in from of the "Let the eagles fly guy".

user-pic

Apparently she got her J.D. in 1999.

user-pic

Why is it that people that are obsessed with religion are so very concerned with breasts. It's not as though they are that unusual, everyone has them and I agree those on women are more attractive but not obscene.

Rep Cleaver from Mo. in a short speech said, "My Grandma said, God don't make no junk." I guess that Monica was just ashamed what her God had made.

Security Code: lock And throw away the key

user-pic

Monica, Monica, Monica. *sigh* I'm sure she meant well.
Monica might have once been a true believer but I think getting burned by Rove may have changed all that. It could happen.

user-pic

Monica, have you ever had sex-u-al relations with another person?

user-pic

front

user-pic

Uh-huh-huh. Ashcroft said, "boobies."

Goodling said, "whose?"

Uh-huh-huh-huh.

user-pic

meese is a pig:

yes, exactly

When former Attorney General Edwin Meese released a report on pornography in the 1980s, photographers dived to the floor to capture the image of him raising the report in the air, with the partially nude female statue behind him.

user-pic

She started working at DOJ around 2002....

I can't find her Regent U website. Maybe she took it down. I think her resume was on there.

Here's a better picture of Ms. Goodling other than the homely one on the Regent website:

I wouldn't bet that Ashcroft wasn't involved, even if Monica gets the credit.

There was quite a game of trying to catch people (not just Ashcroft) speaking in front of the statues, especially if it looked like they were "groping". I've seen a number of them with Ashcroft that are kind of funny...in a childish way, tee hee.

But the over reaction speaks loudly and the symbolism of covering up justice was priceless.

Frankly, I don't know why the statues would have to be covered up during formal functions either. Can you imagine going to Italy and asking for statues and paintings that showed breasts to be covered up...even the Pope doesn't seem to be offended. Some people need to grow up.

user-pic

mrd in nyc: Maybe we've already had this conversation. There are two possibilities. 1.) She's still a true believer and she doesn't recognize the authority of the state. Still even true believers don't like to lie. I think her conscience would really bother her and she is intelligent enough to know the penaties for perjury. If the Judiciary committee can convince her to recognize its authority, I think she will tell the truth, albeit reluctantly.
2.) She's been personally betrayed, her life and career are currently in shambles. If she can work it out with the Judiciary committee and her lawyer that she can tell the truth, in private, away from the media spotlight and get the hell out of Dodge, I think she'll take this option.
So, yes, in the end, I think she will be straight with the committee and tell the truth.

user-pic

Why is she taking the Fifth when she has that Dale Carnegie course under her belt?? Speak, Monica, speak!

user-pic

United, I stand alone against collectivism: Lust and desire are not limited to the secular. The religious get horny too. It's just that they are like feast or famine. Too mch denial causes them to gorge, then they feel awful about it.
Being a fundamentalist winger is no picnic.

When breasts are outlawed, only outlaws will have breasts.

Ira Glass had an episode of This American Life featuring "Cringe Stories". We all have them. At some point in our lives, we have done things that are so ridiculous and embarrassing, to us personally, that thinking back on them makes us cringe. You know, like falling in love with a squatter guy who becomes a Hare Krishna and ironing his dhoti(sp) while you're in law school because you want him to look nice for temple?
I think Monica is going to look back on the last 6 years of her life as one continuous cringe story. She was so caught up in the zeal and success of the evangelical movement that she completely lost her bearings and did things that will seem incredibly cringeworthy in future decades. It's almost as bad as giving the president a blow-job. She will never live this down. And when she finally comes around, she will want to crawl under a rock.
Fundamentalists are self-righteous and smug. They do bad things for what they think are good reasons. But they are still human.

user-pic

The "Original Cover-Up" involved cloaking the scales of Justice, sort of like Diebold electronic voting. Now you see it; now you don't and you're screwed.

user-pic

A prude? She looks like she could such the cowcatcher off a locomotive.

user-pic

Messiah College: the only college for which you just can't come up with a mascot.

user-pic

A prude? She looks like she could *suck* the cowcatcher off a locomotive.

Just can't type no more.

user-pic

I'm scared that Monica attended a "Purity Ball" with her Dad.

This chick is like a kitsch collision between Up With People and Triumph of the Will.

user-pic

Goldberry thinks this is an option:

"If she can work it out with the Judiciary committee and her lawyer that she can tell the truth, in private, away from the media spotlight and get the hell out of Dodge, I think she'll take this option."

But why should we. We deserve the entertainment of watching them squirm after submitting us to this hell for six years. The fact that she is just a witting dupe doesn't detract from the excitement that comes from witnessing her disgrace.

user-pic

Maybe after the Congrssional hearings, Goodling can pose for Playboy.

user-pic

"Psst! Sources tell us that none other than Monica Goodling, former aide to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, was responsible for draping over the ample bosoms..."

What does this even mean? That the idea to conceal the statues originated with Goodling? Now that you've spread this gossip are you going to try to confirm it and report back to your readers?

user-pic

Drits'nDravy: I understand what you want. You want a moment of catharsis. You want to get back at the self-righteous blowhards that bullied the country into making reckless decisions in the name of patriotism and morality.
But I have family members who are just as unhinged as Monica. My brother could give Monica a run for the money (though he hasn't done anything illegal as far as I know). I don't speak to my mother or my siblings because their behavior and treatment of me has been condescending and exclusive.
But I wouldn't wish the kind of attention you are seeking on any of my family. I think of them as conditioned to fearfulness, repressed, gullible and naive. They honestly don't realize they're doing evil.
If Monica were Ralph Reed, that would be a different story. But the news that she was responsible for the draping of the statue indicates to me that she started out, at least, as a true believer, misguided and mislead. She's lead a very sheltered life. Her kind of upbringing did not prepare her for the environment of Washington.
Yes, I would like the fundamentalists to get what's coming to them. But unlike you, I know that the greatest punishment they will face will not be ridicule and derision at the hands of a righteously indignant public. Their punishment will happen when they descend into disorder with the rest of us as a result of their actions to undermine government - and the Rapture doesn't come. Then they will realize that they have followed false prophets and the lives they gave up for their dream of paradise, their youth and vitality, the sensuality and love they spurned, the friends and family they rejected, are gone and may never be recovered.
That judgement day is coming and it will be a very rude awakening indeed. Then, you will have justice.

user-pic

The BushCo JustUs Department has always been obsessed with covering up its inadequate boobs.

user-pic

I JUST MOVED MY BOWELS IN MY PANTS....

user-pic

Bwa-ha-ha. My spouse worked in the Facilities area of DOJ when the order for the drapes came in. I couldn't believe it when he told me what they were for. Originally, during the renovation of the main Justice building, someone (Monica?) wanted the female statue moved into the ladies' room because Ashcroft thought the statue was pornographic.

user-pic

Keeper quotes:

"Monica Goodling is devoutly religious, which is to say she cannot tell right from wrong."

I think Monica will soon become the fall guy/gal for every stupid thing that has been said or done in the last 6 years.

Pretty soon we'll find out she helped Ashcroft write "Let the Eagle Soar".

If Monica was behind this idea, it was because Ashcroft was offended.

user-pic

Wow! Quite an impressive resume.

I can't believe, however, that she left out the "Laff-a-lot Traffic School" course she attended at 16 after her first traffic ticket.

Or the "Microwave Your Way to Good Cooking" class she got free when she bought a new oven range for her first apartment.

user-pic

Maybe she was jealous of the "ample bosoms"

Did anyone clue her in on the symbolism of "covering up Justice?" Maybe we could have been spared this episode....

code word = fact

not with this administration...only lies, spin and pleas (both fifth and guilty)

user-pic

Someone should let Garance Franke-Ruta and Amanda Marcotte know about this.

user-pic

Another scandal, another Monica.

user-pic

Truly this thread was great therapy!

Steve, you found how easy it is to feel obliged to use the "code word."

goldberry, you outdid yourself in understanding and compassion for people like monica - and her plight.

And so many posters provided levity along with insight into the foibles of fundamentalist prudes who advertise what they fear by covering it up in public!

The word is "degree" and I don't now whether posters have earned degrees or set out degrees of humor, but thank you one and all!

user-pic

She's from York, PA, which is in the middle of some of the most right wing religious communities imaginable. This is an area so similar to the Bible Belt that it makes no difference. It is near where the creationists got stomped on in Dover, PA. She went to Messiah College which is very fundamentalist. She has been formed by her environment, but she is smart enough to realize that her environment is just plain wrong.

user-pic

Lolly
LMAO...Thanks

user-pic

"She will go down with the ship."

I believe you're right.

Not to be tongue in cheek, while Goodling may believe her position is as a missionary, she may be fingered by someone.

No one could say she picked up the gauntlet which fell, ate the poisoned apple of distrust in Gonzales (as a man, her master), debated herself over what to do ... and then spread herself -- too far to be helpful to him.

As for testifying. The Senate Judiciary Committee will make sure she comes, and before it's all over we may be treated to Goodling, indeed going down.

Or have I overstated?

user-pic

I'm not sure but what is the problem with keeping abreast of the situation?

user-pic

Which Lawyer did she hire from Regent University to defend her? She does have a lawyer and her lawyer is a Christian fundie who is surely telling her to tell the truth for as you know it is a sin to lie even if it is to a Senate Judiciary Committee! She does know that doesn't she? I mean they must have taught her that in that good Christian University...Truth above all or is that just a talking point!
