Today's Must Read
Hell hath no fury like a lawmaker searched!
Or something like that.
Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX) is furious that the FBI is thoroughly investigating him, issuing subpoenas for documents, and interviewing a number of his former aides.
For one thing, the Justice Department just won't stop asking questions about his wife's work for two organizations controlled by Ed Buckham, a lobbyist and close associate of Jack Abramoff. Here's DeLay speaking with reporters yesterday:
“They’re going after other people and they’re questioning the other people about whether they know anything I may have done. And we’ve given them all the records and that’s the problem they’re having.... [My wife] did her work and she was underpaid for the work she did and they can’t make the case. It’s a Justice Department that is running amok. Fish or cut bait. Do something.”
Yeah, bring 'em on!
It's at this point that DeLay's defense lawyer, Richard Cullen, steps in to moderate. You can hear the soothing tone: “When Tom DeLay said that [about Justice], it reflected frustration that many people feel when they are involved in an investigation... We are very comfortable that the Justice Department is proceeding properly and expeditiously."
Investigators have reportedly been probing whether DeLay's wife actually did any work at those jobs, but that's far from their sole focus. Abramoff and DeLay were key allies; a bond forged by millions of dollars. It's no coincidence that two of DeLay's former aides have pled guilty in the Abramoff scandal, and a third, Buckham, is in danger of being indicted.
But DeLay isn't the only lawmaker who's outraged (outraged!) by the FBI's tactics. Rep. John Doolittle (R-CA), who is also in investigators' sights for his ties to Abramoff, just can't believe that the FBI searched everything in his house:
“The agents systematically searched our home, removing every book, turning over every couch cushion and every pot and pan, and rummaging through every drawer, file cabinet, cupboard and closet...”
The nerve.

I cannot wait to see this idiot go down! He has nothing but total arrogance and disdain for the public at large. I suspect he is going to find out what justice is all about...
In another interesting note, a number of members of our Texas House of Representatives stood up to its speaker yesterday and said that they are tired of "loyalty at all costs" instead of working by the rules. Tom Craddick has ruled the House with an iron fist, and was somewhat shaken by the turnabout of events.
Maybe there is some hope...

Hey, Delay, you bag of shit - your daughter, Danni Ferro, used your name to raise $300,000 in 2004 for a so-called children's charity, Celebrations For Children,Inc., but not one thin dime went to charity.
In 2004, legal fees were $23,340.
In 2005, Celebrations For Children raised $3,900 and spent $36,120 on legal fees.
Those legal fees have anything to do with your case?

Gee, Mr. DeLay, what kind of person would contribute $300,000 to Celebrations For Children, Inc,. a charity that existed only on paper? Would you or your daughter care to comment?

I have this theory about Tom DeLay in that voters associate DeLay as being the face of GOP corruption so I labeled my most recent TPM Cafe thread about him, "Give Tom Delay More Air Time, Please!" (link below).
In my Delay thread, I posted Philip Shenon's 11/4/05 NYT story, "DeLay Asked Lobbyist to Raise Money Through Charity":
"WASHINGTON, Nov. 3 - Representative Tom DeLay asked the lobbyist Jack Abramoff to raise money for him through a private charity controlled by Mr. Abramoff, an unusual request that led the lobbyist to try to gather at least $150,000 from his Indian tribe clients and their gambling operations, according to newly disclosed e-mail from the lobbyist's files.
The electronic messages from 2002, which refer to "Tom" and "Tom's requests," appear to be the clearest evidence to date of an effort by Mr. DeLay, a Texas Republican, to pressure Mr. Abramoff and his lobbying partners to raise money for him. The e-mail messages do not specify why Mr. DeLay wanted the money, how it was to be used or why he would want money raised through the auspices of a private charity..."
In the email, Abramoff told Tony Rudy that DeLay wanted him to raise money for him through Abramoff's phony charitable foundation, the Capital Athletic Foundation.
We recently learned that Abramoff used his foundation to wire two $5k bribes to Mark Zachares so I don't think it is a stretch to consider that Abramoff may have wired bribes to Tom DeLay through the foundation.
In 2003, Abramoff's foundation actually contributed $25k to the Delay Foundation For Kids.
The 990s for Abramoff's Capital Athletic Foundation - EIN #522181892 are online at the Foundation Center's 990 Finder:

Here's something that Ronnie Earle might want to look into - why the Oaks at Rio Bend Inc. changed its EIN# when it filed its 2003 990.
Oaks at Rio Bend is one of two charities associated with Tom and Christine DeLay, the other being the DeLay Foundaton for Kids, Inc.
Oaks at Rio Bend is the vehicle by which the DeLays set up homes for foster children on donated property in Fort Bend County TX. Until 2005, most of the Oaks at Ro Bend's funding came from the DeLay Foundation.
In 2003, the George Foundation, a very wealthy Texas private foundation, donated 30 acres of prime real estate to the Delay Foundation for Kids, according to its 990. But according to Fort Bend property records, the land was donated directly to the Oaks at Rio Bend.
For some unspecified reason, the Oaks at Rio Bend changed its EIN# number in 2003, the same year the George Foundation donated the 30 acres. Oddly enough, the Oaks at Rio Bend changed back to its old EIN# the following year.
Oaks at Rio Bend EIN# per 990s:
2001 - 752974534
2002 - 752974534
2003 - 752574959
2004 - 752974534
2005 - 752974534
The George Foundation recorded the value of the 30 acres donated at fair market value which it valued at $403k. The Oaks at Rio Bend valued the land at $180k.
The George Foundation made the commitment to donate the land to the DeLay Foundation in 2001 which was the same year that it "sold" valuable real estate at cost to the mysterious "Leahman".
Charles Herder, a Houston real estate developer, is a director of the George Foundation. He made his one and only contribution to Tom DeLay, $1k, in December 2001.

According to the 2005 Oaks at Rio Bend 990, the books are in care of Christine Delay at 1500 Pultar Road in Richmond TX 77469. Her phone number is 281-341-6257.

The thing is that this current search of the Doolittles' house might not have anything to do with Jack Abramoff or any other current ongoing investigation that we know about.
I first asked about Julia Doolittle's association with Tech Travelers, a software company, in the TPM Cafe last July. Her name and home address are on the Tech Travelers Virginia corporate registration. Thomas Murray, a neighbor of the Doolittles, is or was Tech Travelers CEO.
About a week after I posted about Doolittle, Murray and Tech Travelers, the company changed its name to Red Branch Technologies, LLC.
C 92 and I noticed that some of the people involved in Tech Travelers also were involved with another software company, MSD. MSD stands for Management Systems Designers, Inc. According to its website, MSD was awarded a price of an $8 billion Dept of Commerce IT contract.
I don't know if John and Julia Doolittle had anything to do with the $8 billion Commerce IT contract but given the current climate of corruption in Washington DC, I wouldn't be surprised if they did.
Johnny Frazier, the Dept of Commerce inspector general, is under investigation for alleged corruption so controls might not have worked the way they should have at Commerce and $8 billion is a pretty big contract.
I have so little faith in the integrity of the Doolittles, I ran a reverse search of businesses registered to addresses on their street after finding the Tech Travelers registration. Doolittle is secretary of his homeowners association so everyone in the neighborhood knows who he is.
Capital Athletics, registered in 4/02 and declared inactive in 5/03, may have been a perfectly legit operation but it sounds a lot like Jack Abramoff's Capital Athletic Foundation so I posted about the company in the TPM Cafe.
I had to laugh when Doolittle tried to throw his wife under a bus a couple of weeks ago. The guy's not only a crook, he's a cad!

The DOJ is not exactly kicking in Delay's doors. The books and records he is referring to were probably turned over to the DOJ awhile ago.
Yes, the DOJ probably has stalled the Delay investigation for political reasons. Ask AG Gonzales why it has been a revolving door at the DOJ Office of Public Integrity.
My guess is that Delay thought he had escaped federal prosecution and now, with Congressional oversight in place again, the DOJ might actually be doing its jod which is not good news for DeLay.
As I noted above, the recent search of the Doolittles' house may be part of a new investigation into public corruption involving the Dept of Commerce.
Keep in mind that Delay and Doolittle had no qualms about the DOJ stalling on the Abramoff investigation when it suited them.
