DoJ Purge Figure Withdraws Nomination
It's Friday afternoon. You know what that means: it's time for a senior Justice Department official to resign.
This time it's Acting Associate Attorney General William Mercer, who, not so coincidentally, was due to have a confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee this coming Tuesday. Mercer is one of the senior DoJ officials Kyle Sampson claims to have consulted about the firings.
But rather than undergo an unpleasant round of questioning, Mercer has withdrawn his name from consideration and will return to his other job; he's the U.S. Attorney for Montana. Mercer -- much to the chagrin of the chief judge in his district -- has been pulling double duty since 2005. Considering that one of the supposed reasons for U.S. New Mexico David Iglesias' firing was that he was an "absentee landlord," Mercer was sure to have been asked about his own absenteeism.
Mercer follows the resignations of other DoJ purge figures Kyle Sampson, Monica Goodling, Michael Battle, Paul McNulty, and Michael Elston.

Another dweeb bites the dust. I wonder if he has a voice like the other DOJ "lolipop kids"?

Will he provide testimony on what he knows about the DOJ politicization? Is anyone left to run the DOJ?
A rogue newly invented Cheney branch of govt. operating in total secrecy and a corrupt, understaffed DOJ who's top dawg is a complete criminal AND will do anything to cover up the crimes of his master, GWBush, who is going to pursue contempt of Congress if they do finally ACT?

I doubt many are terribly upset to see this parade heading for the exits. But can't at least one of these guys/gals grab Milton's Swingline, crack Gonzales with it, and drag him out the door with them on their way out?
This also begs the question: If crimes were committed in the Justice Department but no one is left there that did them, were there any crimes at all? (There are forests of trees desperately hoping that they can stop hypothetically falling.)

Jesus Christ on a bicuit! They ALL look Rovian! Are we getting close to the edge of the (Bush) world yet? When we leave Bush-world, will people tell the truth agin?

He doesn't want to go up and testify. Peter Pace is being let go of his pentagon gig so he won't have to testify. Are Republicans afraid of Democrats? Or do they just want to keep what they've been doing in the past hidden?

Waterboarding would get the truth out of them. They all look like wimps.
Isn't their work partly on behalf of our national security? I think we need to get to the truth.
Let's see: a cold room, no clothes, standing for days, dunked in water, smear blood on them, put a banana up his exhaust pipe and have Ms. England point and laugh at his little weenie.
I'm sure he'd break without much trouble...and it's all legal and in the interests of our nations security.

Better than nothing, I suppose, but a shame that Montana still has to put up with him.

"Mercer has withdrawn his name from consideration and will return to his other job; he's the U.S. Attorney for Montana."
Was he one of the "stealth" appointments, or did he have a confirmation hearing for his US Atty post?
If "stealth," aren't they only allowed a "temporary" status, such that they must undergo confirmation after 180 days, or something?

An NPR report earlier today said that Mercer had been told that he would not get a confirmation hearing until the WH and DOJ cough up the emails etc. that have been demanded. His belief was that therefore he'd never get a hearing, i.e., the WH will never give up the goods.
I have my doubts as to whether the Dems have that much discipline, but it would be nice to think so.

I don't imagine the good people of Montana will be too thrilled when he drags his tarnished ass back to act as a disgrace to freedom on their behalf.

I think the suggestion that AbuGarib techniques of questioning members of this administration be pursued to the hilt.
What's good for the goose, is good for the gander.

Indeed, Abu Garib is a fine example of using the latest interrogation techniques to seek out the secret intents and plans of terrists, so why not be democratic and use these same techniques to find the secret intents and plans of the most secretive and illdisposed maladministration ever to sit in the White house?

It's like 'Algiers'...there's the organization chart, and we eliminate one major DoJ officer after another. In our case, however, the extrajudicial criminality diminishes as the elimination proceeds.... :-)

In 1996, Bill Mercer was student body president at the University of Montana and I was a columnist at the Kaimin, the campus newspaper. Bill was pushing for creation by the student government of what looked from a distance suspiciously like a conservative think tank or PAC. There were some irregularities in the paperwork for that project and I tried to get a copy of a relevant document. The document had apparently been improperly removed from the student government offices and I approached Bill and asked about getting a copy of it. He started walking away from me. I followed him and continued asking. He whirled around, poked a finger toward me and said, as I recall, "You bastard! You're rude. I'm not going to talk to you anymore." The headline of my column the next day was "You Bastard!" Bill's think tank tanked. But it's been comforting in the years since to see that he hasn't lost any of the leadership qualities he developed here in Missoula. And that the Bush administration obviously agreed with me.

My Fiancee, John R. Mitchell and I have posted some completely outrageous comment in the past few years and want to apologize to this forum.
I’ve been under the umbrella of an illness most people do not talk about. The doctors currently have me under closer supervision and back on a regular schedule of routine medication.
John Mitchell and I have been on a roller coaster ride of medication, professional help and conspiracy theories for years. So needless to say we both have illnesses we will, for obvious reason, not post here today.
Again If you would like more information please write or email me at:

Maybe the Congress could interview the guy before he flees for Montana?
Personally, I'm getting sick of the Joseph Goebels fans in the DOJ. Mercer is one of them in the same spirit of Count Karl...he basically accuses his opponents of the crimes he himself has committed as a way of deflating any opposition to his agendas. When will Congress do something about these Nazi sympathizers?

One little, two little, three little partisans...
One political hack will resign for each betrayed DOJ Attorney?
Sounds like "almost-instant karma," at least as instant as our snail-pace political system can accomplish.
But they are all underlings, and the primary rogues continue to languish in their nepositions.
Unfortunately, we must wait until the next election cycle to make the kind of changes necessary; until we stack the deck as bit more in favor of progress, peace and justice, the DC weenie club will continue to conveniently "remisinterpret" what the public meant in our last November surprise.
