Paper: Vitter Was Repeat Customer
Well, at least it wasn't during Lent. From The Times-Picayune:
A phone number for Sen. David Vitter, R-La., appears at least five times in the billing records of what federal authorities say was a Washington call-girl operation, the first just four months after he was sworn in to the U.S. House in 1999 and the last on Mardi Gras of 2001.Under pressure earlier this week, Vitter acknowledged committing a "very serious sin" and that his number showed up in the records of Deborah Jeane Palfrey, who has come to be known as the "Washington, D.C. Madam." An attorney for Palfrey earlier said that Vitter's number was found once in the records, but a search of the documents by The Times-Picayune turned up four more calls to a number once registered to Vitter. The attorney said that clients also used phones in hotel rooms, so that not all the numbers can be traced to individual callers.
The records show that Vitter number was called by Palfrey's service beginning Oct. 12, 1999 and ending Feb. 27, 2001, which was Mardi Gras. Palfrey has said she was running an escort service that her employees were instructed not to engage in sex acts. But federal prosecutors say she was running a prostitution ring that netted more than $2 million in assets.
Records show that the return calls to Vitter's number generally lasted a minute or two and were placed in the evening. The phone number had a Washington, D.C., exchange. Vitter keeps an apartment in Washington where he stays while Congress is in session.

Today, Louisiana blogs are buzzing with rumors that surfaced back in 2004 about Vitter's "love child" now living in Alexandria, VA. Kos referred to it back in 2006, assuming most citizens of LA were aware of it. I can tell you that most citizens here were NOT aware of it.

What I find astonishing is that his self-esteem was so low that he would actually pay for sex... I mean honestly guys, if your paying for it.. in a commercial transaction.. something ir REALLY wrong and that behaviour insane when a spouse and children is involved.
It is a consistent observation similar to the book true-believer by Eric Hoffer that the more religous one asserts himself to be, that they attempt to 'escape themselves' and are in most cases, 'most' cases.. the moste depraved of all.
It goes to fear, uncertainty, and doubt...
This type of individual is ripe for compromise and I have no condemnation for him for the sex acts, just the lurid and insidious circumstances that these 'plastic people' find themselves in.
As if public positions can accrue self-esteem, or a public soptlight creates it..

No, Senator Vitter, it's not just a "very serious sin," it's illegal. Your wife can forgive you for the infidelity and embarrassment, and your God can forgive you for the sin, but that doesn't change the fact that lawmakers who repeatedly break the law should not be tolerated.

It's just a matter of time before he discovers he has a problem and has to enter rehab until this blows over.
Personally I could easily forgive him for hiring a prostitute if he hadn't publicly condemned the same activity on several occasions.
He should either state he is unfit to serve public office and resign just like he claimed Clinton was unfit to serve after Monica or he should apologize to Clinton for his remarks. Of course the later would assure that the Republicans would throw him out of office for committing the unforgivable sin of apologizing to a Clinton.

Press Release: Senator Vitter is mistaken in saying that I forgave him and condoned his sexual acts with prostitutes. I have spoken with Sen. Vitter only a couple of times in the last dozen years, and subjects were only about stopping the rain or making the golf ball go in the hole.

I am familiar with the intersection in New Orleans near where it's been reported that the Senator had his rendezvous with the prostitute in the late 90s (Dauphine & Dumaine), if I recall recent reports. There's a pretty good restaurant there taht has a dynamite breakfast. Anyway, there's also a grade-school close by (Catholic, I think), and I noticed what appeared, to my admittedly untrained eye, to be more than a little gay "cruising" going on in that vicinity. I say string him up for his hypocrisy, but I'm somewhat less than outraged about his personal sexual habits. A diaper fetish seems pretty harmless.
As for the poster who speculated that the only people who go to hookers have low self esteem, I think it's also possible that public figures find it a little risky to be out in bars hitting on women. I think that's the same reason movie stars get caught with hookers. The good senator refused to take questions yesterday, but obviously that cannot continue.
The first question should be:
"Senator Vitter, in 1998 you called on President Clinton to resign because of 'moral unfitness'. You claimed his remaining in office set a terrible example for young people and lamented the lack of accountability and consequences for his actions. Senator, why aren't you applying your *own* criteria to yourself?"
