Rove Gave Political Briefings to Justice Department Officials

From The Washington Post:

Justice Department officials attended at least a dozen political briefings at the White House since 2001, including some meetings led by Karl Rove, President Bush's chief political adviser, and others that were focused on election trends prior to the 2006 midterm contest, according to documents released yesterday.

Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales told the Senate Judiciary Committee last week that he did not believe that senior Justice Department officials had attended such briefings. But he clarified his testimony yesterday in a letter to Congress, emphasizing that the briefings were not held at the agency's offices....

Justice officials attended 12 political briefings at the White House, and another held at the Department of Agriculture, from 2001 to 2006, according to the list sent to Waxman. At least five were led by Rove or included presentations by him.

We'll have more on this tomorrow.

I don't understand this issue.

The Office of Special Counsel determined that Lurita Doan, GSA chief, violated the Hatch Act. If J. Scott Jennings was the one who actually gave the GSA presentation, isn't he guilty of violating the Hatch Act, too?

What is supposed to happen if someone violates the Hatch Act? So far, nothing has happened to Doan.

What is the significance of Rove giving pep talks to the DOJ other than it making the DOJ look partisan as hell?

Nelly Bly

I think we need to look further into any illegal actions that were taken by the administrators or inaction that helped republican candidates.

user-pic

The Hatch Act has no criminal enforcement. The only thing it can cost an employee is their job, or knock two years off your career for pension purposes.

Here is what a politicized DOJ means in real world terms, in Texas, as seen here:

DALLAS MORNING NEWS

For four years, U.S. Justice Department attorneys heard the horror stories: Inmates in Texas juvenile prisons were being beaten and molested by the people who were supposed to protect them. Texas Ranger Brian Burzynski detailed abuses at the West Texas State School in a 229-page report and worked with the federal attorneys who ultimately dropped the case.
Federal watchdogs discreetly collected information and discussed fine legal points as the assaults piled up. More than 2,000 allegations of staff abusing inmates were confirmed by the Texas Youth Commission from January 2003 to December 2006.
The Justice Department ultimately declined to prosecute anyone at TYC or do anything to compel agency-wide reforms.

Why no prosecutions? Because our boy Bradly Schlotzman had his own agenda.

user-pic

Doolittle was on Rove's list of endangered GOP, he was also under investigation by the DOJ. Were there other GOP on Rove's list who were also investigation? Could this be seen as a way of interfering in the investigations?

user-pic

What really kills me is that the Attorney General of the United States of America freely admits ILLEGAL BEHAVIOR (employees of the Department of Justice of the United States of America, which HE heads, attended political briefings on government property in violation to the Hatch Act, in this case the Department of Agriculture) as an excuse to get out of other ILLEGAL BEHAVIOR, in this case perjury.

It blows me away that the freaking ATTORNEY GENERAL sites freaking ILLEGAL ACTS to excuse other ILLEGAL ACTS!!!

What has our become of our country?

user-pic

Great question, kali! Last fall, I wondered about how much the White House knew about various ongoing DOJ investigations - Curt Weldon, Conrad Burns, John Doolittle et al.

At the time, I was more curious about why the WH would, for example, send out Laura Bush to stump for Weldon when a grand jury was investigating him.

I wonder if Weldon's name ever came up when Rove gave his briefings to the DOJ about key races. The grand jury was empaneled around May '06 but the decision to investigate Weldon criminally would have been made earlier than that.

user-pic

Rove can be exposed rather easily. The knowledge about his personal issues is well known in Washington circles. He will be exposed soon. The closet is getting smaller.

user-pic

Anon, Are you implying that Rove is gay with your closet remark? Even if Rove is gay, so what? The GOP only cared that Ken Mehlman lost an election, not that he was gay.

user-pic

Being gay hasn't hurt many Repubs...Drier isn't that straight either.

Foley was only hurt because of the intern part of the equation, not his gayness.

user-pic

Maybe, Anon, you were referring to skeletons in Rove's closet of which I bet there are many. I am of the belief that every facet of Rove's life be checked and doublechecked.

For example, the Roves took out a three-month $100k mortgage with a million dollar credit line in 11/02 with a bank in Birmingham AL. I thought somone should check that the Roves actually repaid the mortgage and whatever they drew down on the credit line.

You never know when you are going to catch someone cheating.

user-pic

Pajama parties in the Lincoln Bedroom! Rove, you sly fox, you...whose pants did you get into? Did you get a little Monica of your own? (wink wink nudge nudge)

That Bush White House, always competing with the Big Dog.

user-pic

Omigawd! I googled "karl rove homosexuality" and came across this story from noted journalist, Tom Flocco:

Karl Rove Seen at Homosexual Orgies in Washington

Walter Storch, editor of the Barnes Review News reported three weeks ago that "Karl Rove was seen by one of my people entering a private homosexual orgy at a five-star Washington hotel over the Mid-Atlantic Leather (MAL) weekend last year." [2004]

A Barnes reporter told Storch that "Karl greatly enjoyed the supervision of a certain hairy 350-lb. Leather Dominator who had won the Miss Virginia Daddy Bear title at the MAL festivities."

Storch wrote, "Karl used to hang out a JR’s, which is on 17th between P & S streets, before he became so well-known. This is a respectable gay bar for discreet people...," adding, "there is an expensive apartment...over near Dupont Circle that certain powerful senators take turns visiting with their pickups." ...

user-pic

By any chance, did investigative reporter Wayne Madsen do a follow up?

user-pic

Lurker - Don't know. The Wayne Madsen Report now charges an annual fee of $30 which is out of my league. As an aside, I'm kinda curious about how many people have signed up for it.

Getting back to Karl Rove, homosexuality is in his jeans, according to a recent bio about him.

From the Huffington Post:

New Book Reveals Karl Rove's Father Was Gay...

In The Architect, a new book chronicling Karl Rove's life and conservative agenda, authors James Moore and Wayne Slater, reveal Rove's father, Louis Rove, was homosexual.

Louis Rove left his family during the 1969 Christmas holidays and moved to Los Angeles where he eventually "came out." According to Rove's father's best friend, an openly gay man named Joseph Koons, "Louie didn't hide the fact that he was gay. But he didn't play it up either." The Architect describes Louis Rove as a shy man, encumbered by his three hundred pound figure. To encourage Rove to socialize, Joseph Koons, invited him to join a retired gay men's group called the "Old Farts Club," jokingly referred to among the men as the "Rainbow Casket."

Karl Rove frequently visited his father in the 1980s. Joseph Koons said he didn't sense "any great tension" between Karl and his father.

Rove keeps a photograph of his father on his White House desk and has remarked to reporters that his father "lived life exactly the way he wanted to live it."

user-pic

Oops! I, of course, meant homosexuality is in Karl Rove's genes, not his jeans.

Hey Ms.Bly ,
When I read your post about TurdBlossom I feel a little icky -like maybe how I felt when I was reading Ms Goldberg's diatribes - tripping out on Monica & the blue dress. And then I remember that BushcO in general & TurdBlossom in particular made "gay marriage " and other gay bashing rhetoric part of NeoCon GOP dog n pony show to elect Republicants. So I guess its ok to go ahead and expose this right wing homophobic hypocrisy - if its at all true. We're not some members of Hitler's original Gang -homphobic & closet gays at the same time? Hitler did also round up the Roma , gays , & Christians that tried to resist his Aryan Cult of Personality - shipped them all off Dachua & other death camps .
I pray for my Country, and reaffirm my belief in our Constitution -particular the 2nd Admendment - a good ol ' USA insurance policy against our own "Night of the Long Knives ! "
( But could Rover been the one letting bIG Jeff Gannon into the White House-all those many times ? )

user-pic

The skeletal remains in Roves closet are compromised (No pun intended) of both economic and personal values. There are many dirty deals with different sources, some of whom have already been exposed. The key is for someone to dig into the people who have known issues and connect the dots back to Rove. Financial investigations of all involved parties would go a long way to that end. The personal issues are very well known, they can be proven fairly easily. Many people have knowledge of Roves life, The trick is to get them to speak freely and without fear of reprisals.

user-pic

I might add that age is of importance concerning the personal issues. The right way to check into this story would be to start in the 1980's and go forward. There is an awful lot to check into, but the ages of those involved might be of extreme interest to the people. All I can say for now is to look into the call boy scandals from the 80's and other areas. These areas are of very high importance.

user-pic

What is it with anonymous posters here in the TPM MR lately? They all seem to know the juicy stuff but won't share it with the rest of us. Instead, we are urged to go out and do our own leg work.

user-pic

http://www.dallasnews.com/investigativereports/tyc/

After the scandal broke they cleaned it up but if you control click on the May 23 headline link it pops up a timeline of the documents where the abuse had been reported and whistleblowers were brushed off by then governor Bush's office.

user-pic

...noted journalist, Tom Flocco...

Yeah, noted for crap. Just take a look through older Flocco articles, it's crap. Sure, he drops all kinds of rumors, some of which turn out to be true, but he's far more problem than solution. If I wanted to muddy the waters, I'd turn to Flocco.

user-pic

Anon, I mistakenly assumed that most readers here would know I was having fun with Tom Flocco's story about Rove being dominated by a 350-lb. Leather Dominator who had won the Miss Virginia Daddy Bear title at the MAL festivities.

I apologize for being silly here in the TPM MR. Karl Rove is no laughing matter, something I've believed for a long time.

user-pic

Flocco, Madsen, Rense...

These are tough days. A sense of humor really is a vital accoutrement.

user-pic

Gannon - Rove. It HAD to be Rove. Given what we now know about Rove's involvement with politicizing the DOJ and with leaking Valerie Plame's CIA cover, it HAD to be Rove who got Gannon into White House Press briefings with no security clearance.

user-pic

Hmm...the Huffington Post had a photo of Rove at a Nationals game yesterday and now it's gone. The photo showed Rove sitting with an unidentified woman who did not look at all happy to be there. Mrs Rove maybe?

user-pic

NB:

Photo's still there. That's his wife, Darby. Surprised they're not at "home" at their cottage in Texas.

I am not gay, but I have a couple of very close friends who are. They were staying with another extremely wealthy gay couple(Republican donors) in Key West over the holidays in 2000, on their yacht, when Karl Rove and his family showed up to join them. One of my friends got the distinct impression that Karl's wife did not like homos, but Karl was very friendly, and went jet skiing with one of my friends. They had fun. This was a big, gay, new years bash on a yacht, and Karl was having the time of this life. As Billy Budd said, there is only one way to tell the truth.

user-pic

Conspiracy to violate the Hatch Act would carry criminal penalties. So would covering up (obstructing justice).

My fellow Michigander, the answer is, over a quarter century of rule by Conservatives.
