Today's Must Read

Barbour Griffith & Rogers has long been a powerhouse GOP lobbying firm. Now, apparently, American politics are just too small-time. BGR, according to a report by IraqSlogger's Christina Davidson, is trying to influence Iraqi politics as well.

BGR, the firm started by Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour, has been promoting Ayad Allawi, the one-time Iraqi interim prime minister who over the weekend published an op-ed in the Washington Post calling for the parliamentary overthrow of current PM Nouri al-Maliki. The piece amounted to a trial balloon for American support for a second Allawi-led government, promising non-sectarianism and stability. Allawi has decades-old ties to the CIA, making him a known quantity to U.S. officials during a time of extreme frustration with Maliki.

But frustration alone doesn't get governments to fall. That's where BGR comes in. On August 17, the firm purchased the domain name Allawi-For-Iraq.com (the site's not yet live). Following publication of the op-ed, Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI) called on the Iraqi parliament to hold a no-confidence vote on Maliki. BGR circulated Levin's comments around Washington -- and particularly to Congressional staffers -- using the e-mail address DrAyadAllawi@Allawi-for-Iraq.com.

Yet BGR hasn't registered any affiliation with the ex-premier:

Allawi's relationship with BGR apparently is relatively new, however, because official Justice Department and Senate lobbyist tracking records provide no indication of the BGR-Allawi relationship.

BGR's Web site, which identifies dozens of BGR clients by name, makes no mention of Allawi.

But the firm's ties with Allawi perhaps shouldn't be so surprising. Among BGR's executives is Ambassador Bob Blackwill, who in 2004 served as the White House's Iraq coordinator. In that role, Blackwill was an enthusiastic booster of Allawi, helping manage the process that led to Allawi's selection by the U.S. and the U.N. as interim prime minister in advance of the dissolution of the Coalition Provisional Authority. After the 2005 elections in Iraq, Blackwill wrote a laudatory op-ed in The Wall Street Journal praising Allawi's strategy for crushing the insurgency: "Mr. Allawi's message is simple: Join us in building the new Iraq and accept its benefits or, if you support the insurgency, get ready to die."

As it happened, the strategy didn't live up to its promises. The elections knocked Allawi out of power, as his tenure ended up alienating a large swath of the majority Shiite population. His attempts at enlisting American support to return to office -- a perennial rumor in Washington
over the past two years -- have all fallen short. Evidently, though, Blackwill and BGR evidently think that the time is right to get the old gang back together.

After initially granting tepid support to the current Iraqi government during the current fracas, President Bush clarified yesterday in his speech to the VFW convention that he supports Maliki, whom he called "a good guy." We'll see how long that lasts.

It would be interesting to know who is footing the bill for BGR's services.

Here we (US Government) go yet again, backing another coup of a democratically elected official. "At long last have we no sense of decency?"

Not in my name!

user-pic

Shoot -- all they have to do is get Katherine Harris and Jeb Bush over to Baghdad, and they'll be able to "elect" whomever they want!

Security Code: memory (as in "the American electorate seems to have the memory of a goldfish...")

user-pic

What, no Chalabi? He was their darling earlier.

user-pic

You know I think what amazes me the most is how these guys turn this stuff into income. what pays their salaries? How do they make as much money as they do?

is all their income derived from government spending? Do these lobbyist get gobs of money from these companies to get kickbacks?

ugh, so disgusting this part of the world.

user-pic

Chalabi, last I heard, was busy tending to Iraq' oil.

user-pic

The speech of Bush's support for Maliki in his speech before the VFW yesterday will be remembered as an example of the quintessential liar this buffoon of a leader really is. Coupled with his Vietnam comparisons with the Iraqi debacle, the speech should be spot lited in a showcase in his 500 million dollar presidential library.

How appropriate that the code word for my comment is "snake".

user-pic

Gee - its great to hear that Democrat Carl Levin to could be such a help to the effort too.

user-pic

Re Frank's comment:

Do you notice how much more bouncy and manic bush seems to become as the situation deteriorates more and more? It is really, really weird and bizarre!

user-pic

Just thinking:
Expect Maliki government to be de-funded. The money is already going elsewhere with our politicians right behind it.
The sooner we get our CIA puppet in there, the sooner we complete the ethnic cleansing, the sooner we get the oil law, the sooner we get our troops out. Well, 3 out of 4 is still batting .750

Johann asks the key question: Who's paying them? Qui bono?

user-pic

Yep, TheraP, it look clinical to me....
plus is he starting to look eighty years old to anyone else?

user-pic

Let me get this straight, now the U.S. or entities within the U.S. who claimed to want "Democracy to flower" in Iraq, are now pushing for "overthrow" of the democratically elected government of Iraq? Nice! And we wonder why much of the world scoffs at us and calls us hypocrites?

Actually, this is all part of the Project for a New American Century (PNAC) plan to preoccupy our country in perpetual war and distraction from their corporate agenda to capture world oil/gas reserves.

Gee, what else will we do in the name of democracy? We've already removed Aristide in Haiti and that's really gone well, we took out Saddam, we play these geopolitical games of implant and remove all over the world for generations, yet if you believe the Fox News bullshit, we're "just trying to help everyone around the world spread democracy." Somehow it seems the words "spreading democracy" is a code word for making shit up to take out world leaders we don't like and/or desire their resources, and enriching the U.S. Military Industrial Compound.

Here's more on the overthrow of Aristide and U.S./neocon motivations.

I believe this has been the goal all along to some day make Allawi, the CIA guy, the strongman leader of Iraq.

He was the first man Bremer "handed over" power to in June, 2004, the Bushies/Levin have allowed the so called Democratic process of a flawed vote in Iraq take its course, and now they're/U.S. political establishment (Dems and Reeps) are going to push their man into power.

We're their for the oil and Allawi is the man the establishment always wanted in power.

user-pic

One word. "Noriega."

user-pic

Yeah, more great news from the neocons. Aside from being the CIA's puppet, he was involved with the INA (Iraqi Mational Accord) which supplied erronious information to M16 about WMDs. A childhood friend of Saddam's and extremely close ally/relative of Chalabi. The former minister of trade in Iraq was Ali Allawi (Chalabi's sister's son and cousin to Ayad).

user-pic

Chalabi should visit all his fellow countrymen who are vacationing in Jordon , He will get the reception , For Life !

user-pic

Allawi, as Spencer will recall, has been the subject of coup rumors for 2-3 years now, maybe longer. It's been SO long.

Juan Cole runs an item today from a well-placed source that coup rumors are once again flourishing.

Bush thinks Maliki's doing a heckuva job. Well, too bad, there is no government left to take over

Someone tell Levin and Hiilary

user-pic

The Administration's really painted itself into a corner on this one. Can't claim to be supporting democracy when you go in and otherthrow Maliki.

The end game begins!

user-pic

So Bush had good things to say about Maliki, so what. If you live in the Greater NYC area or happen to be a Yankee fan (Boooo) you know full well that Steinbrenner always endorsed the manager a week or so before firing him.

too good, the security code is... fire.

user-pic

If we can just get rid of Deim, we can try Big Minh in the position. If he doesn't work out, we can always get Thieu and Ky to ...... oops! Sorry! Wrong part of the world, wrong century. Same strategy.

user-pic

Bush, we want you out of office. And everything about you erased from public view. And on your way out of America stop at every city on the way and apologize for your lies and the ruin you done. But thats not all. Your last act is to stand before the country, put your legs between your legs and kiss your arse.

user-pic

Robert Fisk is reporting on Commondreams.org that Alawi has admitted to working for 28 different intelligence agencies.

If anyone has any doubts terrorism will be around for a long time, just take a look at this single move uncovered. It's US guys. WE are the ones promoting terrorism. WE have been supporting regimes here in the United States that have one single purpose.... to control us and the rest of the world. Both Reps and Dems... the two divisions of ONE mob have been and continue to turn us and the world into little puppets.

I'm discusted with ALL incumbants of BOTH parties. All the dlaws being passede by BOTH parties are doing one thing... giving those in charge more power while, at the same time, diminishing the once sacred democracy our ancestors fought for.

Both parties, meanwhile lie to us and tell us they are only there to help us. No, folks, they are only there to increase their power, and when push comes to shove, they will support their opponents power struggle... anything but give away their power to the folks down here who were meant to govern through their representatives. Our congressmen and senators no long plan.... they plot... and they are plotting with other crooks in BOTH parties.

Remember what a fiasco they just had with the ethics bill... while a Minnesota bridge was falling down, killing people.

Remember the promises to stop the war, and the funding bill they passed after election. Remember their outrage at the spying on our own citizens... and their hurry to pass further spying because they were in a hurry to leave Washington.

These guys are NOT representing anyone but themselves and their cronies... and they have convoluted the system so much that even treasonous behavior only means a lifelong pension if caught.

This little manipulation in Iraq is just a representation of what occurs at our own election booths every couple of years. We look at it and are astounded at what is going on but we cannot even see that the exact same thing has been going on here for way too long. It's a terrible thing our leaders are doing... attacking Iraq without cause. However, this war is also killing lots of innocent American folks... and this is just as terrible.

The problem is.. we continue to focus on Bush for the war, when it took a vote from Congress to actually instigate the attrocities.

I believe, if I'm not mistaken, that BOTH parties voted to start killing people. I also believe that it was the arrogance, greed, and subversion of power by BOTH parties over many years, interfering in many countries, which brought us to the place we are now. "We the People" have taken a concept rare in this world... one which was meant to give power to the common folk to self govern, to work together in struggles for the common good... we have taken this idea and, over the years, allowed special interests to subvert it into an evil, self interest entity which has no second thoughts of sending innocent people to their deaths for its own gain... all the while, blaming "the other guys" for the problem... IMHO

user-pic

The good news is the arabs seem to understand what is going on better than we do and unless we kill everyone, our cia backed dictators won't get in or last forever.

Charlie Black represented Chalabi. More of the same.

This seems threatening to stabilization efforts in Iraq.
