Today's Must Read

We may never see his like again. Well, at least not until the confirmation hearings for his successor.

Alberto Gonzales, the Justice Department's master of disaster, has resigned as U.S. Attorney General. Whenever there's been a Bush administration scandal, the president's longtime confidante has been there -- from torture to warrantless surveillance to the U.S. attorney firings that ultimately proved to be his downfall. Two weeks ago, Patrick Leahy (D-VT), chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, asked the department's inspector general to open a perjury investigation into Gonzales.

Well, now Leahy won't have Gonzales to kick around anymore. From the New York Times story breaking the news of his departure:

Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales, whose tenure has been marred by controversy and accusations of perjury before Congress, has resigned. A senior administration official said he would announce the decision later this morning in Washington.

Mr. Gonzales, who had rebuffed calls for his resignation, submitted his to President Bush by telephone on Friday, the official said. His decision was not immediately announced, the official added, until after the president invited him and his wife to lunch at his ranch near here.

Mr. Bush has not yet chosen a replacement but will not leave the position open long, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the Attorney General's resignation had not yet been made public.

Mr. Bush had repeatedly stood by Mr. Gonzales, an old friend and colleague from Texas, even as he faced increasing scrutiny for his leadership of the Justice Department, including his role in the dismissals of nine United States attorneys late last year and questions about whether he testified truthfully about the National Security Agency's surveillance programs.

The administration is sticking with the line that Gonzales did nothing wrong. An anonymous official is quoted as saying, "The unfair treatment that he's been on the receiving end of has been a distraction for the department," the official said. For a roundup of what Gonzales did to receive such "unfair treatment," our own Paul Kiel compiled a list of the now-vanquished AG's greatest hits.

Gonzales is expected to have a press conference at 10:30 or so. Stay tuned.

why resign? is there an indictment coming?

user-pic

Thank You God. code word soap as in wash the scum of.

user-pic

I can't wait for the nomination hearings for his successor. Pass the popcorn.

user-pic

Gonzales got voted off the island this week.

user-pic

Gonzales deserves to be renditioned to Iraq where he can spend the rest of his life spreading freedom: Mwahaha! Mwahaha! Mwahaha!

user-pic

The gift that keeps on giving is no more.

Ehh, there's always Iraq.

user-pic

So is he off the hook on all his crimes and misdemeanors?

user-pic

Rene: good question. IANAL but I think no. unless he is pardoned in advance. lawyers please help!

security code: bent. as they bent the constitution until it cracked and tore.

user-pic

Why does everyone assume there's going to be confirmation hearings? Newsflash: Right now, Congress isn't in session. That opens the field for old "Recess Appointment" George to strike again... and, I think, under the revised USA PATRIOT Act, that recess appointment would never need confirmation.

user-pic

Unfair treatment? Oh yes, these Republicans are always being victimized.

So much for "the adults taking back the White House." They never take responsibility for their own actions, instead they lie, whine, complain, dissemble, and obfuscate the facts. They continue the Rovian spin of the big lie in the face of overwhelming evidence indicting them of....well, lying and in this case breaking laws.

Hypocrites! Up is down and down is up in this bizarro Bush World.

user-pic

Prosecute him anyway! He broke the law. This is a nation of laws is it not?

user-pic

First Rove

Now Gonzales

Next Cheney?

Will the good news ever end?

user-pic

All these guys resigning tells me the other shoe is about to drop. I just dont know what the "shoe" is? IG?
More likely internal assessment that indictiments are inevitable, and resigning now.

user-pic

His resignation should make no difference to being on the receiving end of a subpeona. If anything, it should be better, because, as a former Cabinet member, he can't claim Executive Privilege and must be able to have total recall to cut a deal to avoid his own personal Gitmo.

Code Word: SCREW, as in put the screws to him and make him talk.

user-pic

Worth noting, he was a liar til the end.

user-pic

No. Gonzales is not off the hook.

As I had said in the past, John Mitchell was the first Attorney General who was convicted of criminal behavior and Alberto Gonzales will be the second.

user-pic

Don't get your hopes up the Dems will stand in the way of Chertoff's confirmation. Just look at how the Dems are playing along with the Reeps in blaming Maliki (not that he doesn't deserve a great deal) for seemingly all that is wrong with Iraq. This takes largely off the hook, while at the same time helping him to appear as Maliki's loyal partner in forging a "democracy."

Seriously, from everything I've read over the weekend, the Dems will give about as much pushback on Chertoff as they did for Roberts and Alito.

user-pic

So Abu Gonzales has left the building..does this put an end to Gonzogate and Congress's investigation?

I hope not..they need to nail the Big Dick Cheney and Georgie now.

I just bought popcorn..this will work nicely into my tv viewing..the hearings for his replacement.

Christ, Brownie? I heard that one too..jeebus.

user-pic

I say out of office, but not off the hook. Every one of them should be held accountable for their actions-even after 1-20-09. I would like nothing more than to see each and every one of them behind BARS. A boy can dream, can't he?

user-pic

My guess is that the Inspector General was about to authorize an investigation. Once that starts his resigning wouldn't have stopped it. The only was to avoid the investigation was to have Gonzo resign now. That way it's up to the next AG to choose to start an investigation or not. Something that is extremely unlikely after the fact.

user-pic

So if Harry Reid did make a deal with Bush on recess appoinments this'll leave us high centered. Bush'll go back on the deal and put Chertoff up. Which will futher distace the netroots from Reid.

It's kinda like sex, with a partner with an std - it feels great for a while...til you realize you got fucked.

user-pic

YIPPIE BUT RECESS APPOINTMENT WAS UNEGOTIATED BY BUSH/REID NOT HAPPENING

user-pic

The Dems may not have to pushback against a Chertoff nomination. Reading the right wing sites and they apparently hate Chertoff's "liberal" immigration policies and will lobby that he not be confirmed.

Really, the most horrid suggestion for successor I've seen is Orrin Hatch. And apparently it's a serious consideration.

user-pic

BlueStateRedHead: "...unless he is pardoned in advance..."

Don't bet your lives that won't happen. It could happen at Bush's follow up presser today. All the elements justifying the Libby commutation are present.

I can hear the sanctimonious B.S. already: "He's suffered enough", "The reputation he gained through his years of public service and professional work in the legal community is forever damaged", etc.

And the coup de grace: "The Constitution gives the President the power of clemency to be used when he deems it to be warranted."

Since he has often stated he believes Gonzales has done no wrong, it follows (in Li'l Bush circular logic) that some form clemency is warranted immediately.

user-pic

The right-wing fanatics will not be pleased with Chertoff. They want a fire-breathing, child-eating monster to prosecute all Dems for anyting anywhere until Nov. 08. Chertoff isn't that guy.

Glenn Renoylds, anyone?

user-pic

BlueStateRedhead: "...unless he is pardoned in advance..."

From the Libby commutation statement: "The Constitution gives the President the power of clemency to be used when he deems it to be warranted."

Look for Bush to extend some form of clemency at the follow up presser. Given his public position that Gonzales has done nothing wrong, why would he not?

user-pic

Orrin Hatch new AG?
Pat Leahy tipped some weeks ago.

user-pic

Orrin Hatch new AG?
Pat Leahy tipped it some weeks ago.

user-pic

Not sure how any legal indictments or lack of will play out, but they should impeach Gonzales to send a message to future appointee's as well as prevent him from ever working for the government again.

Security Code: weight, as in the weight of the burden to keep our government honest is something we all need to carry.

user-pic

Now we can all focus on Cheney...

user-pic

Actually he needs to have more free time to tend to all the legal issues facing bushcon as all this progresses.
We are talking about everything, not just his little problems.
He has been representing bushcon over 15 years.
That is much more important than showing up to tell congress whatever he feels like saying.

user-pic

Josh started all this! TPM doggedly went after the US attorney firings when nobody else thought it was a story, and forced it into the consciousness of the MSM.

Congrats Josh, and thank you.

[code = face, as in 'face the music, sukka']

user-pic

Nice presser Gonzo! Real class.

user-pic

..uhhh-folks, while we are chasing this new shiny object, what else is going on we're not supposed to notice?

user-pic

Radarcat;

just focus the lazerbeam of public scrutiny on Cheney for a few weeks, and all of that "what else is going on" you are so right about will be revealed...

user-pic

A classless punk, right to the last.

user-pic

Gonzalez has the temerity to select September 16th as his departure date - - Dies y seis de Septiembre? Mexican Independence Day!? He's got another thing coming if he thinks he buying any independence -- not if Conyers and Leahey keep their word.

user-pic

Is it too cynical to think that Alberto is bowing out today in the hopes that the news will be buried behind the hysteria over Michael Vick's plea? Are Larry King and all the other cable blatherers going to focus on the guy who has spent the last 7 years subverting the constitution or on the millionaire jock who tortured dogs?

user-pic

Why Chertoff? It appears that his views on immigration policy might match Bush's. More importantly, if any problems come forth on Katrina relief for DHS/FEMA, Chertoff can say, "I don't remember" from both sides of the table.

user-pic

So bush is going to pardon 3 turkeys this year?

user-pic

Why is he waiting till 9/17 to go?I don`t think I can take another 22 days of this.
This is Clinton`s fault.
Code word collar,as in maybe he`ll become a priest who takes a vow of silence.

user-pic

I found the recent NSA wiretapping law modification to be suspicious to say the least. It greatly increased the power of the AG. Why would the Dem's increase the power of the man they don't trust and are investigating? That law may have been a quid pro quo for Gonzales's resignation with a suitably short period between them so as not to arouse too much suspicion. This way the Dem's get to confirm the new AG, probably a Republican of their choice.

user-pic

*
Bernard Gilroy, you nailed it (above).

Folks, get ready for a **RECESS APPOINTMENT**.

That's their game. Seems pretty clear to me.

Any bets? My money's on John Yoo.

user-pic

Don't let the waterboard hit you on the way out.

user-pic

"Even my worst days as attorney general have been better than my father's best days," Gonzales said.

Especially the day an asskissing liar like little Alberto was born.

user-pic

Think about it. This deal was made more than likely by pussy democrats right before summer vacation. They rolled over for a lube job from the NSA and a promise not to seriously investigate wiretapping and attorneygate in exchange for the steaming head of Al Gon on a silver platter. Its politics. I suspected it when they all quietly tucked their skirts down and slinked off into the Washington night 2 weeks ago.

The good thing is that my fears of martial law declaration are diminished now. I think part of the deal to get Gonzalez was to settle before hand on Chertoff as the replacement. Though he is clearly a bush crony he was deballed and neutered by Katrina. I do not think the little dem pussies fear him as much as a real racketeer. They could be wrong but I am sure they are thinking since Skeletor already has 2 Big strikes against him that that fact will make him much less likely to do anything bizarre over the next year.

Certainly the jumping of rats Gonzo and Rove from the sinking ship make Cheney complete master and commander of the ship. It clearly sets the stage for the coming attack on Iran which by all accounts will be during the dark months on the calendar when the days are shortest and the night cover is most extreme. This period begins in October. Now there will be no distractions for the new War. NeoCons will not need to cover their ass openings with one hand while dueling with the other. In fact all serious investigations of treason and high crimes are gone now for good. Kiss all that goodbye. Once the Airforce and Navy begin their attack it will be 24/7 rally round the flag and all talk of any previous scandal will be totally forgotten and become very small footnotes in history.

user-pic

Laugh city. Bushie bemoans the politicized atmosphere that has hounded Gonzalez from office.

This is from the same guy, who along with Turdblossom, tried to politicize everything in America down to the choice between paper and plastic at the grocery store.

I'm just glad that these masterminds used solid facts and straightforward rhetoric to remove terrorist wannabe and Osama bin Laden look-alike Max Cleland from office five years ago.

user-pic

No doubt he wants to spend more time with is family

user-pic

No doubt he wants to spend more time with his family

user-pic

Right wing voter suppression just took a big hit!!

At the very beginning of this either the Sampson fellow or the women from Patterson'S college talking about the attorney's firing said, "if we don't do this right it may cause a stir"!! Lady, you nailed it!!

No way should Chertoff[the refugee from Auschwitz]should get the job!!

Lindy

user-pic

What will happen with these wholesale pardons that are going to roll out like toilet paper?
Can they be made moot when Bush/Cheney are shown to be intimately involved with the crimes being pardoned?
(I know I presume too much; assuming the need for a pardon assembly line means congress would have to ACT...)
Still, anybody know the legal ramifications in my fantastic scenario?

user-pic

one could hope that they can wait for just a bit before the trial and possible jail term. king george would commute or forgive him in a new york minute

bodhi: "It clearly sets the stage for the coming attack on Iran "

I hope you're wrong, but unfortunately I don't think you are.
FAUX News has been greasing the skids for just such a scenerio. However, the national reaction might not be "rally around the flag" so much as something similar to what happened when the US invaded Cambodia: widespread protest. Of course, in this case the Iranians will undoubtedly retaliate on US soil, prompting the bushies to do the thing that they've been yearning to do since the beginning: declare a national emergency, declare martial law & maybe cancel the 08 elections.

user-pic

Fredo was a good little puta. Bush will miss him something fierce.

user-pic

Never mind Chertoff. The president ought to nominate his bro, Jeb. What the hell, he's out of work anyway. And the prez can always say, hey it was OK when JFK installed his brother as AG.
But if Jeb has other things to do, mebbe good old reliable Tom Ridge will ride to the rescue. Or another Pennsylvanian with experience, Tricky Dic Thornburg -- or are those two men too wise to the Bush White House to want anything more to do with this dwindling gang of warmongers????
