Dem Defection Sends Voter Fraud Guru to Full Senate
As I reported yesterday, the Senate Rules Committee met this morning about the nomination of Hans von Spakovsky to the Federal Elections Commission.
This morning's result: faced with the defection of a Democrat on the committee, later revealed to be Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE), Chairwoman Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) chose to agree to send all four nominees, two Democrats and two Republicans, to the floor without recommendation. In other words, the committee did not vote to approve von Spakovsky, but he got through nonetheless.
Next up is a vote before the full Senate, and how that vote will occur will be determined by negotiations between the Democratic and Republican leadership. Republicans are likely to seek a vote on all four nominees at once and have threatened to spike all the Democratic nominees if Democrats seek to block von Spakovsky.
Feinstein only said during the hearing that a Democrat had advised her that he would support von Spakovsky's nomination. In comments to reporters after the hearing, she identified that senator as Sen. Nelson.
Note: In addition to our reporting on von Spakovsky's attempts to intimidate Justice Department employees, stifle their appeals, single-handedly disenfranchise thousands of Arizonans and then give false testimony (later modified in written answers) to the committee about it, you can read Dahlia Lithwick's take at Slate and ThinkProgress' rundown of von Spakovsky's past.

All the GOP has to do is leave the Democrats to their own devices and they will destroy each other.

Who didn’t know this would happen? It was only leaked (or announced) two weeks ago that Reid had “struck a deal” assuring von Spakovsky’s nomination.
Sniveling cowards, the lot of them.

I'm coming very close to utter despair that anything can be done to stop the Republicans from running the country into the ground.
Hell, we could probably throw all but one of them out of office and Reid and Feinstein would find some way to cave to their demands...

G__DamnItAllToHell! I'm sure there are others in California that would like to be the new Senator.
On the positive side, he'll now be of higher status within the DOJ when he announces his resignation to spend more time with his family.

No more confirmations until January 09. Who cares. We are better off with nobody than a king appointment. The less king appointments in office the less damage the little dictator can do. Will the freaking dems get a spine. This is absurd.

Why do the Democrats bother running in elections if they're going to help the Republicans rig the vote.
If von Spakovsky gets confirmed it really is proof that the Dems are incompetent. Incredible.

There are not two political parties. It's just that simple, Nader was right. Who knew?

My advice to Dems in Senate. Since no recommendation was sent along with the four nominees, then grow some and insist that they be voted on separately. If Reps whine, then remind them that these nominees were not endorsed in committee, just passed along and that this is not a normal course of events.
And don't fold because the GOP threatens you. God and the voters are on your side.

game over.
democrats = traitorats.
we knew the repukes were vile thugs; now we have final proof that the other party is just as infested with blight, rot and mold.
is there no where else to turn to?
democracy dies kowtowing to a bullying regime with the commoners held at bay by fear and britney spears on E! - a sad semi-validation of a star wars scene ("so that is how democracy dies, to thunderous applause...").

Feinstein will never run again. She will be almost 80 years old in 2012. She has absolutely nothing to lose by letting her true colors show. Feinstein has always been a conservative authoritarian disguised as a Dem and now she is proving it. FISA, Leslie Southwick, war profiteering and now Lieberman/Kyl and von Spakovsky on the same day.

Sad, sad days for Democrats! We have lived at least 7 years with incompetence at the Executive Branch level.
Now, it seems that we have been duped and voted a large group of spineless incompetents into power for the Legislative Branch.

This is pathetic! His wife is Viveca Novak, who "slipped" to Rove's attorney that Matt Cooper would testify that Rove told him about Valerie Wilson. That enable Rove to go back and "refresh" his memory about the call from Cooper.
It is this "slip" that resulted in Rove not being indicted. They are on the same team - this guy has no business holding any position involving the public trust. His wife ruined an important investigation and she was fired when she should have been indicted herself for obstruction of justice.

This is insane. It's not just immoral, it's politically incompetent. Nelson and Feinstein have just guaranteed that fewer democrats will be elected in 2008. CRAZY. This is beyond DLC. It's self hatred. SPAKOVSKY IS A DIRTY RATFUCKER> HE STEALS ELECTIONS FOR A LIVING> NO CONFIRMATION OF ANY OTHER CANDIDATE IS WORTH LETTING THIS ILLIBERAL GOON GETTING INTO THE FEC!!!!!!

Here's a little more to the story, from an excerpted transcript up at Daily Kos, that gives a little more illumination:
During the Rule Committee’s executive meeting Wednesday, Feinstein originally said she wanted to vote on each nominee separately, as opposed to considering all four nominees together in one vote, as the committee has done in the past. Republicans on the panel objected, arguing that the move breaks all known committee precedent on moving FEC nominations.
"The precedent is very clear," said Sen. Bob Bennett (Utah), the ranking Republican on the panel. "Nominations to the FEC have always been reported en bloc and in pairs."
But Feinstein said committee rules governing FEC nominations allow only for passing nominations that have unanimous consent, which her objection would prevent. After about a half-hour of negotiation, Feinstein and Bennett agreed to pass all of the nominations without recommendation.

Is it just me or are behind the scenes shananigans going on! I mean unless there is some sort of power struggle going on behind the scenes it appears that the democrats are in bed with the Republicans when it comes to doing their constituents will. I write my Congressman and Senator (in Texas) and although it makes me feel good to vent (although my senators would never listen ayways) it appears that the only thing to enfranchise voters is to write in someone whom they can trust outside of the establishment. Also I do not mean to sound like a hater, to the Hillary crowd, but if she doesn't get hammered for here vote today on the Lieber-waffe then I believe there is an organized effort to undermine the Obama campaign, as well as all other minortiy democratic candidates. I guess just like the super-bowl, the World Series, and the NBA Finals we must have either a New York Team or a Los Angeles team this time around. (I know this isn't exactly spot on but I am really in a quandry over the state of our nation!!!)

The Democrats in the Senate should really punish Ben Nelson for this one.
Being a Democrat from a red state might mean you vote the wrong way on some symbolic issues, but certainly not to confirm an unqualified nominee to an important post...especially since most Nebraska voters do not know who von Spakovsky is or care about it one bit.

this is simply a fix,
las vegas style, harry reid style.
nelson agreed to act for reid.
feinstein oked "whatever",
being the doddering old fool she is.
spakovsky gets thru
because
reid has a hand picked member among spakovsky's cohort of four. a person he (reid) wants on the commission.
when reid appeared, unnecessarily, before the feinstein subcommittee, he fulsomely praised his nevada opposite, sen. engle(?).
he remarked how sen engle had placed his (reid's) nominee's name in play.
and he remarked how he and sen engle now had a very amicable relationship.
harry reid, the new joe lieberman.
so?
so reid fixed the whole deal so his personal nominee would be on the commission, even if spakovsky was there too.
and he had the help of ben nelson and diane feinstein.
it's time to clean the augean stables of the u.s. congress -
of democrats as well as republicans
to whom personal deals are more important than this country's future.
all old farts in the game way too long!!

Why did you 'admire' her? Are you a zionist?
Surely it's long past time for a "USA First" movement to get rolling? Health care for all U.S. children, before billions in military aid are given to Israel? Why are my tax dollars being sent--by Feinstein and Rahm Emanuel--to a renegade criminal mass-murdering state that's in major violation of UN resolutions, like 242?
And before any Likudnik answers that "Israel has the right to protect herself" let me add that the Palestinian n*ggers ('cockroaches' they were termed by I$rael's Minister Of The Interior...nice) in Gaza and the West Bank have the right to defend THEMselves as well. You'd never know it, if you watch a week of PBS TV in the USA.

The lack of spine and unaccountable caving by Dems is in my view possibly due to the warrantless wiretapping etc the Government is doing plus whatever the rich backers of Bush are doing as "civilians". You don't have to blackmail everyone, just enough to de-ball your your opponent. These home-grown facists care more about destroying the Constitution and installing a Christian dictatorship than about UBL, terrorists or Islamofacism. After all, the uber-rich and powerful will be protected in secure undisclosed locations when the next 911 happens. It (bio, chem, dirty bomb or nuclear) will fall on the common people.

Twilight Zone everybody.
You know we never seem to hear stories about Big Business arm-twisting people. We know how it works in politics, but we have to now equate everything political with Capitalism. Disaster Capitalism
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/john-cusack/huffpost-exclusive-my-in_b_65990.html
Business and Gubberment are one and the same now. Someone said to me on another post that, as far fetched and chicken-little as it seemed 10 years ago....government operates UNDER the Umbrella of Business now instead of the other way around. Perhaps 10 years ago we were both still naive and it has been going on a lot longer. Very possibly.
Current Disaster/Shock and Awe preznincy is perfectly skilled at twisting political arms. Every squeak of a republican breaking ranks the last 5-6 years has been squelched and the squeaker spends a week back-tracking and isn't heard from again. I mean, this is World Class armtwisting. Public figures with The Goods spill the beans. Public figure then retracts everything and goes into seclusion. LeChimp and TheCHeney and corp. media swing into action and basically bitch-slap the american public and say "who you gonna believe, me or your lying eyes". Remember, Public Figure has told, virtually, millions of people about this-and-that with their initial media rollout....and withing a week or so it is scrubbed from the public eye.
Now the global capitalists can twist arms too. And when we see our Dems folding on issues that they seem politically capable of winning it has to be plain to you all who is twisting their arms. Nader was right.
The NewWorldOrder isn't interested in your concerns or playing fair. We should all stop being so naive, so shocked and at a loss to explain why the public seems to lose every battle. A trickle began in order to reverse the New Deal and it has grown into a tsunami. They have all the megaphones, loudspeakers, satellites, cameras, microphones. They own the tele and comm lines. They own all the networks and most of the papers. The remainder of HUGE money that isn't employed monopolizing our media is busy advertising on this media. The media cannot even tell us what is really going on because it conflicts with their interests and they would be doing expose's on themselves and their advertising clients.

Over the course of the past six years, I thought that the American press had failed democracy by failing to provide oversight. I blogged. I supported sites like this one, TPM, engaged in reporting the truth without tiptoeing around and/or kowtowing to corporate forces.
I've learned that all the truth in the world, in the hands of politicians, adds up to one big lie, and no amount of good reporting can change that.
As a nation, we are lost. When a so-called Democrat openly assists the placement of one of the architects of voter disenfranchisement as a tool for political control into any position of public trust, all hope is gone.
The corporate, two-for-one-and-one-for-all party death grip on Washington D.C. is the enemy. The Democrats have strung along the Netroots up until this point, and are hoping to do the same until 2008, when they hope to landslide into the same control system the Republicans enjoyed under Bush-Cheney.
The failure to block von Spakovsky is an implicit approval of disenfranchisement. It's a staggering roundhouse punch to the skull of voting rights -- one big Fuck You to every citizen of this country too poor to buy an election, regardless of which party's flag you wave. We've been had, there's no question about that.
So what do we do next? Inherit the earth?

I don't really understand why Feinstein is being criticized here so much, she didn't have the votes to block Spakovsky's nomination because of the defection of Ben Nelson so she did her best to salvage a bad situation by passing on all candidates with no recommendation. I'm pretty sure most of you should take it up with Nelson, not Feinsteain.
