Dems Delay Contempt Vote on White House Officials
Way back in July, the House Judiciary Committee voted to find White House chief of staff Josh Bolten and former counsel Harriet Miers in contempt of Congress for failing to respond to a committee subpoena relating to the U.S. attorney firings investigation.
Today, John Bresnahan over at the Politico reports that the Democratic leadership is unlikely to push for a full vote in the House until late September at the earliest. The reason, he reports, is that Democrats haven't yet "briefed lawmakers on what it would mean and how the controversy would play out, both legally and politically":
“I don’t think anything is going to happen on that for a while,” said House Democratic Caucus Chairman Rahm Emanuel (Ill.). “When you decide to do that, you have to make your best case. You want everyone to understand what’s happening and why.”Emanuel said Pelosi and other top Democrats have not begun those consultations yet — and he was unsure when they would.
Conyers said it was critical for Congress to enforce its subpoenas against executive branch officials, including senior White House aides.
“Otherwise, we just become a [social] club,” Conyers said, adding that he would be reviewing the issue with Pelosi soon.

This is so surprising! It is such a break from the pattern of relentless pursuit of the truth and justice the Democrats have engaged so far, that one must wonder if there isn’t something amiss.
The one thing we can be sure of is that those Bushies now know that elections have consequences. They must be very worried about this threat of contempt.

maybe it's time to write some more letters.
Geez, when are the dems going to grow a spine and do something historic. Their performance has been regrettably underwhelming.

Letters? Don’t kill any more trees for this effort. It’s lost.
The fact is the Democrats aren’t worried about the people paying attention. They are worried that any attention they may get will alienate those not watching. They figure the base will vote for them no matter what they do. They are very, very wrong about that in my case.

I always believed that from the beginning Pelosi is really a republican stooge, collaborator. She has asserted or un-asserted herself at key moments to protect the whitehouse. Now it appears, that education of her flock has gone by the wayside. This is her way of undermining the judicial committee. But in all fairness to Pelosi, it doesn't look like congressman or senators know what the hell they are voting on half the time anyway, then it's 'oooops, we didn't see that in the bill'. BS. Time for a real voters revolution.

I see the impulse for Congress to protect itself is winning out over whatever desire for truth it might still have. (It isn't like they aren't hearing from us, after all.)
If they really want to keep their jobs (with perqs we can only dream about), they need to pay more attention to their employers - us.

Can someone say overplaying your already weakened hand is no way to win unless you're a top notch bluffer? We already know the Dems simply aren't that.
So how about taking a page from the Lessons Learned playbook and not being so hellbent on repeating mistakes from '02, '04 and christ, '94??? Micromanagement of public perception to a point of utter incapacitation is a surefire way to lose at anything. These Dems tiptoe around the eggshell lined halls of Congress hoping nobody will notice they're there when they should be stomping the shit out of everything in sight! Their inability to rely on poll after poll showing public opinion is well beyond backing them in legal action against this mal-administration, yet it's becoming painfully apparent that THEY are the ones, THEY have become the Emperors without any clothes, since they are willfully not serving the public's outspoken interest in seeing justice served or even providing the public with the perception of justice.
Gretzky's greatest quote (in my mind)was you miss 100% of the shots you never take, so aside from the efforts from the Stern Letters Committees headed by Conyers and Leahy, there are zero efforts underway, save Glenn Fine, to undo the MASSIVE FRAUD so plainly obvious, it could be a neon sign blinking on the Vegas strip. When will our elected "reps" start, y'know, actually representing the vast majority of their constituents? Maybe Cindy Sheehan has a better shot at Pelosi's seat than most gave her credit for in the first place? At first I likened her to Gary Coleman running for Governor, but she isn't quite as gimmicky as Coleman is. Close, but not quite. At this point, I'd also be willing to wager a stone bearing the likeness of FDR in the Presidio stands a strong chance to beat 'ol Nancy at the polls next year. Bottom line here is it is long past the time to move away from the status quo....As many of us thought we had begun to do in November of last year.
SC is cold. as in cold fury. as in revenge is not always best served cold..as in many other things, like the public being frozen out by their public representatives.

If Speaker Pelosi is going to single-mindedly over-rule the House Judiciary Committee's recommendation of contempt, then she could at least schedule meetings with the Party to set the groundwork. But if she won't start the groundwork until the end of September, then maybe by October they can meet, and maybe by November they can decide to wait to vote until after the holidays ...
Maybe we should start the groundwork for replacing her as Speaker. She can race us.
Is she keeping her cards close to her chest or is she simply not doing anything at all?!

The Dems in office are basically spinless, clueless and most have been there too long. So dissapointing. Term Limits is the solution.

Good luck convincing anyone about those term limits Sandy.. I agree with you, but this isn't a From-The-Ground-Up government holding us captive here.

I am going to vote for whoever is challenging the incumbent. The parties are irrelevant. Everyone is concerned about protecting his/her own position of power within the government and willing to let the country be damaged to protect that position of power. None of them are fit to remain in office. We need to elect fresh government top to bottom.

There may be a desire to hold contempt hearings closer to the election. Americans have an attention span of about 15min. The current breed of Dems put re-election above all else.

I heard Rahm on NPR yesterday touting accountability on Iraq and something he said on that subject makes his statement here makes me think that Rahm and those Democratic leaders that listen to him don't understand what accountability really means. On NPR, Rahm stated that under the Democrats the public had received 4 reports in 4 years about Iraq, 4 more than they'd received in the previous 4 years of GOP controlled Congress. Nice and tight. Repeat 4 three times. Get in a jab at the GOP.
Issuing reports, however, is not accountability and does not make anyone accountable at this late date in GWB's 2 4 year terms. He and his clan have less than 18 months until they get out of jail free. After that the damage wrought by this Administration's shredding the Constitution will be complete. It'll be precedent. SOP.
Perhaps that's what everyone in DC really wants. Out here, in the Homeland, however, most people find it really quite troubling.
The mere fact that 6 years in you cannot "make your best case" because the administration has refused to turn over the evidence should be enough to get that spine stiffening. Apparently not.

Isn't Cindy Sheehan running against Nancy Pelosi? What if all of a sudden Cindy started receiving campaign donations. Maybe the full funding of Cindy's campaign would get Nancy's attention.
Right now Nancy and the DLC gang running the House think that all they have to do is sit quietly and they will be set for years to come. They assume their regular supporters don't have any place to go. Maybe it's time we started showing them otherwise. They work for us, not the other way around.

All this makes a person wonder just what the Bush Administration has learned about the leaders of the Democratic party through their illegal warrantless wiretapping. It is beyond beginning to sound like the White House is telling the Democratic leadership to back off - or else be exposed as something they don't want to be exposed as being.
I'm waiting for any Democrat to start filibustering all Congressional action until the troops are being brought home. Which one will have the cojones to take a stand for the people who want the travesty called the "War on Terra" to end.

Something is going on in the background.
Are Bush and Cheney about to resign?

OTay - Everybody take a deep breath & quit your whining for a few minutes. Conyers & the other Hill Committees have got the goods on Team Rove.
And will very soon have the goods on Team Cheney (if they do not already)/Within the next four to six weeks the fight regarding oversight of BushCO will be engaged fully -with Speaker Pelosi fully on board. We need to give the Leadership another six weeks - if it does not happen then - will we will find someone else to REPRESENT WE THE PEOPLE - Meanwhile lets all support our side .
"INTERESTED lITIGANT " should you be lurking on this thread - would you comment on the four to six week timeline ? Folks old enough to remember the implosion of Nixon will recall it took a very long while - I truly believe Conyers will carry on in that same tradition now - The spirit of Congresswoman Barbara Jordan shall guide us ..

The procedure used so far to such great effect is to:
Send them a letter letting them know how "disappointed" your are in their "inadequate" response. Then ask if their attorney would be willing to "sit down with our staff" and see if we can "find some means of accommodation."
When this comes to nothing, forget about it...or hold another hearing and repeat this procedure
and repeat
and repeat....
Subpoena...we don't need no steenking subpoena! That might make them angry and then we won't be able to send them letters any more.
If I am Fred Fielding, I have to be laughing my ass off. Fred's daily job description:
1- Open mail asking for response to Congressional investigation.
2- Reply "No!"
3- Bill client for $1,200 per hour
4- Have lunch
5- Take nap
6- Go home and check online portfolio
7- Have dinner
8 -Sleep the sleep of the righteous!
Repeat

"...make your best case?". So overly cautious all the time. Always want to be assured of victory before they will even try. Take a chance on the process...that's what brave people understand. Once you begin the process then the information you seek is revealed...in the process of the investigation. Just like impeachment...you don't get all the information beforehand...it comes out during the process of impeachment(can't hide behind executive privilege there), also takes away energy that would be used to continue the occupation or to attack Iran. Trust that the information you need will come out once you begin the process. It's a coward who gives up before he even tries. Somethings demand that you make a stand no matter the perceived outcome. Rham and Pelosi and Reid have every excuse in the world for telling us what they can't do rather than showing us what they can do. Mistakes are ok as long as you're trying your hardest.
