Fredo's Last Day

Today at 3 PM, Alberto Gonzales will speak at his farewell ceremony at the Department of Justice. In addition to the dwindling number of remaining Department officials who haven't resigned, a coterie of law enforcement officials, such as FBI Director Robert Mueller will be there to see him out the door.

The Washington Post reports this morning that Gonzales appears "relieved and happier since announcing his resignation."

As for what he leaves behind:

Almost every senior Justice Department official has resigned or announced plans to depart this year, leaving the department under the control of more than a dozen acting officials. More than a quarter of the nation's U.S. attorneys are also temporary appointees, partly because of the mass firings that eventually had repercussions on Gonzales's tenure.

could someone explain why he got the moniker Fredo?

If he fits anyone from the Godfather, it would be Tom Hagen, giving him the title of "Conseglieri."

To be Fredo, he'd have to sell out to the other families, in this case the Democrats.

he's fredo cause he's a dummy.

rove was hagen

The Tom Hagen character was too competent to be compared to Gonzales...

If I'm not mistaken, it's the denigrating nickname that Bush gave him - like Turd Blossom and Rummy - and Brownie. There isn't anyone in the Godfather saga that resembles Gonzo, so I don't think that the nickname came from there. Besides, The Godfather is a little too deep to be understood by Bush.

Gonzo had become such an embarrassment that many of us were enjoying the metaphor "time to take Fredo fishing." But I think that Gonzo jumped out of the boat on his own.

I thought I remembered reading somewhere that when the Idiot in Chief met Gonzo, he kept calling him "Alfredo" instead of "Alberto", so nicknamed him "Fredo" because of his own stupidity!

In any case, goodbye to bad trash. What a lying scumbag, and these are the nicest things I can think of to say about this lacky.

PEACE

wonkette had a post yesterday about another doj resignation -- Regina Schofield, Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Justice Programs. the striking thing about this was her note to colleagues:

Whether in Indian Country or in Detroit, I really feel proud of the contributions we have made over the last two years.

She was another Bush swine. I have to wonder, if all these really bad lawyers that infected DOJ are struggling in the real world of law, where competency matters, and religious/party affiliation doesn't?

avatar

Gonzales didn't show up today...when contacted at home, he claimed he didn't recall it was his last day....

avatar

Regina Schofield also resigned as Assistant Atty' Genearl . . . She doesn't have a law degree ([www.ojp.usdoj.gov] ) and her title was Assistant Attorney General.

in an April 14, 2003 email to Regina Schofield (then Director of Intergovernmental Affairs at HHS), William Turenne, then Consultant to the Secretary, writes that Surgeon General Carmona 'needs to be the SG with specific speeches, to specific audiences, on specific topics addressing the Secretary's and the President's agenda -- which will become more political as the re-elect gets underway',"

Schofield's other email later that day that officials in the Secretary's office are 'hammering (Surgeon General Carmona) everyday"

She also briefly worked in the White House Liason offices and was involved in the shady hiring practises in the DOJ.

avatar

Thank you, Begonia. That was enlightening. So, Regina (means "queen" or female ruler) has resigned from the empire.

avatar

good bye and good riddance. alfredo was a pinata.

Heck-of-a-job there, Gonzo....

Honestly, I don't know that the temporary nature of the department's leadership and even rank-and-file operatives is a bad thing. Since the next President is going to have to fix the department, having it be transitory when she gets into office would probably help.

Fredo, like frito bandito, on the frito lays chips, remember him? They used to give out like badito pencil erasers when i was in the 5th grade!hahaha

avatar

I thought this whole time Fredo was a take off the Frito Bandito...remember when Frito Lay used to give out little pencil erasers in their chip bags in the early '70s? Remember the song, Ai,yai yai yai! I am the Frito Bandito, I take Fritos corn chips, I take them I do, I take fritos corn chips, i take them from YOU!! HA!

I agree with the anonymous 4:12 post. An empty chair is better than a king appointee any day. I hope the senate does not confirm one single remaining king appointee. We don't need any more criminals running amok in the government.

avatar

Of course Gonzales is happy. Now he can go collect fat paychecks from corporations by advising them on how to stonewall investigations, hide corruption, make misleading statements, get Republican pork in the Bush Admin final days, and generally break every rule, law, guidance, or treaty they dislike.

Alberto "The Weasel" Gonzales is leaving? I hope they count the silverware in the AG's dining room.
