ACLU Official: Kerr Comments Show Privacy 'Under Siege"

Looks like it's not just EPIC's Marc Rotenberg who finds Don Kerr's definition of privacy problematic. Rotenberg called for Kerr to be fired from his position as principal deputy director of national intelligence. Here's a reaction from Caroline Fredrickson, legislative director of the ACLU's Washington office, who doesn't go quite that far:

"What's frightening is Mr. Kerr's comments show how under siege our privacy really is -- the more intrusive technology becomes, the more protective our legal framework should become. The Bush Administration seems to believe that just because they can get information, they should be able to get it, keep it, and use it without oversight."

I'm pretty sure the whole 'let the terrorists fly a freakin' plane into the freakin' World Trade Center' scam was engineered solely to start collecting better data on US citizens, so we can be grouped and targeted better when the Junta appears.

In theory, the reason for having people's
information is to ensure that people
aren't breaking the law, etc. In practice, you now have banks sharing
with HMO's sharing with law enforcement
sharing with god only knows who, so it
kind of looks like the privacy act of
1974 is basically null and void, kind of
like other expectations we used to be
able to have, replaced with the reality
of data outsourcing to foreign countries
and other 'fun'. I got a phishing spam
from russia claiming to be an IRS
message, the 'fun' just don't stop.

On the flip side, what, exactly, can/could/would our representatives DO
about all this data technology run amok?
Not much, nor does it seem they're really
inclined to, not under the 'everything
must go' BushCo plan anyway, no, we're
seeing a paradigm shift where e-karma
is forever...I guess the good thing
about it is that it applies to them, too...still, if you harken back to
Hitler's germany, the jewish people
probably have some choice words for IBM
et. al....logging and categorizing people, databases and whatnot...
interesting times we live in...now,
take your medication, and look into
the pretty light...

Congress needs an NSA-like technology that will oversee the President: Random audits, random interception of information, and random review of documents. Why not? Do they have something to hide?

We the People are entitled to more privacy than the US government. Please contact your member of Congress and ask them, "If the President can use the NSA against the public; why isn't Congress overseeing the President with similar technology?"

I am simply amazed at what is unfolding before my eyes. I'm very mainstream and don't hold fringe views on anything other than getting rid of this Presidency and rolling back the assault on my personal freedoms. I find this completely disturbing but not without precedence. Our founding fathers warned us that our civil liberties would be assaulted under the guise of a foreign enemy. Power is a constant and those who seek it can never, ever be trusted.

The end of privacy, now that's a bit of a problem.

NEOCON, COME AND TAKE THEM.

Hearings, anyone?

We become more and more like the Soviet Union, everyday. The heads of our government and our corporations are afraid of us.

You don't have to be a blind conservative not to see it, just an ignorant one to deny it.

user-pic

Exactly! The gov. wants to know when the revolution is coming so they can bring out the tanks against us.

I don't believe in any 9/11 conspiracy. But I believe the entire "war on terror" is a scam. It is concentration of power, and theft of tax money.
Bushco has no concern for abridged rights, they simply want unfettered power to do and spend. They are above the need for oversight, and resent the little people meddling in their rule. The parallels between bushco and Julius Caesars' ending of the Rome republic are startling.

A Muckrakers dream come true...

"EFF Partners in Launch of Collaborative Government Document Database at Governmentdocs.org"
http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2007/11/eff-partners-launch-collaborative-government-document-database-governmentdocs-org

"EFF has partnered with a coalition of government watchdog groups in launching governmentdocs.org, a site that consolidates government documents produced by Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests from various organizations."

I am continually struck by the irony of an administration who ignores polls, protest marches, letters from upset citizens, etc. etc., yet feverishly spies on us to keep track of what we are saying to each other, what books we read, where we go, etc.
