Lott: No Scandal Behind Retirement
Lott had said he has heard the various rumors regarding his decision to retire, but said the real reason is that which he publicly declared at his first press conference in Pascagoula, Miss. - it was just time for him to leave the Senate."I have heard everything," said Lott "That it was a health problem, that it was a sex problem, that it was a problem with his brother-in-law. None of that is true, not even close."
Lott said he has spoken to Scruggs, who he is husband of his wife's younger sister, just once since the indictment. Lott said Scruggs "is still my friend," and he suspects that the well-known lawyer became enmeshed in "a sting" by the FBI.

"I have heard everything," said Lott "That it was a health problem, that it was a sex problem, that it was a problem with his brother-in-law. None of that is true, not even close."
Well, sure, I believe this. Just like I believe Larry Craig when he tells us "I'm not gay".
Sure.
Definitely.

Still and all, wouldn't you be P.O.'d if you were one of the saps that voted him in? "Sorry, I've decided this job I campaigned for and was elected for just isn't any fun anymore. So I quit." Do you think he'd give the campaign money back?

Funny there is two blog reports this week linking him with a male escort. While the escort is not talking, he acknowledges an impending MSM story on Lott and him.

Lott does look like an o'l queen, though, don't he?
It's going to cost the people in Hastert's Illinois district to elect a replacement for him since he's taking his wrestling mats and going home early, too. The Hammer's been relocated to the toolbox in the garage, so Denny's not having fun anymore. Plus the earmarks will be paying off soon for the land he bought near a proposed highway.

Your headline is a tad misleading. He did NOT say no scandal was behind the resignation.. he said THOSE scandals were not behind the resignation. The truth won't be as readily evident as to what is already known. Think outside the box!!!

I agree with jeffgee. Not only does Trent Lott look like an "o'l queen," when he was in college he looked like a "young queen," cheering on the sidelines at Ole Miss as a male cheerleader. Can't the GOP come up with better closeted queers?

Lott is putting as much distance between himself and Mississippi as possible...Mississippi may have more of that subprime loan junk than any other state in American. You got to follow the money to understand Lott.

"he acknowledges an impending MSM story on Lott and him"
Is that mainstream media? Or men who have sex with men?

I have always thought Trent Lott looked and pretty much acted like he could step right into The Birdcage...and NOT as the Senator...

He was also in that Republican singing group with Larry Craig. The two of them must be close social friends.

The above posters should be ashamed of themselves, though they are probably proud of their homophobic jabs.
This innuendo reminds of high school.
Grow up!
If there is a yet to be disclosed issue related to Lott's sexuality would you please address it in more rational, analytic political terms. Or, are you just looking to discredit what is typically a more progressive site like TPMmuckraker?

I don't really have anything meaningful to say about the article, but I'd just like to make the observation that this is the 2nd time you guys have used that same picture of Trent Lott, shaking hands with that "watermelon-eating" grin on his face. I just find it hilarious, for some strange reason. Hahahahahahahaha.

I think the theory about the rule change as of January 1 for how long he'd have to wait to become a lobbyist is the most plausible one.
I'd be pissed if I'd voted him in again*, just to have him quit, and to know for certain that he'd quit to avoid that rule change would infuriate me. He'd be blatantly abandoning his civic and ethical responsibilities so he could rake in more cash sooner. Not good for the Republican image.
I think that would be a worse "outing" for him than the other one.
*For me to have voted for Trent Lott, this would have to be a bizarro world in which every action had the opposite effect from what's expected in this world.

Trent was part of the Senate that voted for lobbying reform. But part of the new rules is that you have to wait two years after leaving the Senate. If he quits now, he slips in with only one year off.
More time to fight off all those pending investigations, suits and trials. Oh, and duct-tape Dickie's mouth shut.
