Reid Move Blocks Bush Recess Appointments
From Roll Call (sub. req.):
Following hours of intense talks that ended in a standoff, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) decided late Wednesday to move several dozen nominees but still keep the Senate in business over the monthlong holiday break to block President Bush from making any controversial recess appointments while Senators are out of town....But the two sides didn’t see completely eye to eye, as Bush pushed to include in the deal Steven Bradbury’s nomination to be assistant counsel to the attorney general. Bradbury is unpopular with Democrats for his controversial role in formulating the administration’s position on torture.
“I tried very hard to work with the president but he indicated he would still use the recess ... to appoint objectionable nominees,” Reid said on the Senate floor Wednesday night. “My only solution is to end this and call a pro forma session again.”
For a refresher on who Steve Bradbury is, and why the administration would want him in office so badly, see our earlier rundown here.

I don't think it will do any good as so many people I know are very tired of the do nothing Dems in congress.
I know people who are independent minded who are going to vote republican because they think the dems are fools.
They say at least republicans do the one thing that we can all agree on -
and that is protect this great country.

Funny how all the recess appt. and standard appt. folk are (and were) involved in building and implimenting the torture doctrine. They keep coming up like a pasty-white handful of bad pennies.
It's no wonder though, everyone knows they can't get any new people in on the game - because they aren't willing to go down for these a**holes. They have to keep bringing in people who are tainted by the scandal, so they have every incentive to keep the scandal from ever becoming public.
I'm not a moron like poor Tim, but really, it is that hard to figure out? I just watched a George Washington Professor on CNN scold Conyers (and the rest of Congress) for falling flat on their faces in terms of enforcing their constitutional role. And you know what? He was dead-right.

The other day I called Reid spineless when it looked like he would roll over for the telecom immunity.
Well, not only is that shelved until next year, Reid is once again blocking Bush from making his sleazy recess appointments.
Credit where due.

Odd, the independents and republicans and greens and libertarians I talk to who are mad at the do nothing Dems will be tickled at Reid avoiding more Bush appointments.
They all seem very aware of the fact that the worst terrorist attack on this nation came on the Republican watch and that, despite:
suspension of civil liberties - expenditures of trillions of citizens' monies - increases in domestic poverty to pay off Haliburton execs - creation of an abyss at Walter Reid - creating the largest refugee crisis in the world - degrading, misusing and abusing US soldiers and creating contempt for the US throughout Muslim countries and European countries and a smatering of other nations - financially subjugating the US to China - etc.
the inept or immoral Republicans were much more successful at pestering pages and lining corporate and personal coffers than they were at finding Bin Laden.

So the follow up is - if Bradbury doesn't get his recess appointment, is Mukasey going to follow the law on vacancies and kick him out (as he already should have), or is he going to disprove the notion that you can find the law by looking under a rock, while proving up the notion that the ultimate arbiter of the law is that box of rocks aka The Bush Brain?

Were Republicans always this whiny and spoiled a political party and I just never noticed?
They increasingly remind me of those creepy 8th graders who beat up on little 2nd graders to prove they were "tough."

Yes, Timmy, republicans do a great job protecting this great country as exemplified by the stellar job Bush did in the months leading up to 9/11.

I'm pleased with this. The President has had zero respect for advice and consent (or anything else that is constitutionally meant to limit his power). Good for Reid for standing up and forcing him to acknowledge the other branches.

Thank Godzilla that Reid at least has this option. I haven't been all that pleased with Reid's performance this year, and I think he's missed opportunities for success by underestimating the implacable lockstep of the Republicans.
The Democrats should re-think their majority leader and choose the most pugnacious, stubborn, and bellicose asshole they have among their ranks--as long as they can be sure (s)he won't try to placate the Republicans or Bush, as Reid has.
Any suggestions who that might be, or are all the bulldogs on the other side of the aisle?

Oh Yeah. Reid is a true hero in the same sense that the Vichy French were heroes in WWII. Or maybe I am missing some major point here, but has Reid not gone down as a total wimp in the face of the WH when it comes to giving Bush a blank check and no timetable for Iraq withdrawal? And this after saying--how many times is it now?--that there would be no more war funding withhout a timetable? So he does his old "keep Congress in session ploy" and all is forgiven? Seems the Dem standard for success has shrunk to this.

Good move, Harry. Let's see more of them. No quarter for bullies.

Thanks, Sen. Reid. It's a bit passive-aggressive, but effective.
This is the one I was worried about: Stanley C. Suboleski as assistant secretary for fossil energy. He's from Massey Energy. See article here: http://www.fool.com/news/associated-press/2007/12/18/nominees-company-had-safety-violations.aspx

mickey g - Aren't you forgetting how the Repugnants solved the anthrax mystery? How they enacted tough new regulations for security at chemical companies, nuclear plants & the ports? How they made sure every last grandma takes her special orthopedic shoes off before passing through airline security? Oh well, 1 out of 3 ain't bad. NOT.

Frankie,
Americans excessively rely on planes for their public transportation. Barring politically unfeasible solutions like raising the tax on jet fuel, humiliating the passengers seems the best option. Let them expose holes in their socks! Confiscate facial mosterisers, hairspray, OJs, make them come two hours before the flight so an intercity bus has a fair break for being faster etc.
Flying and driving is particularly pernicious. Tow their cars away if they stray from them for a second!

Well, something's better than nothing. Scratch that - something is better than allowing recess appointments by a President who has no respect for any other branch of government or the Constitution that created these checks and balances.
If all they can do is block Bush appointments until the clock runs out, then go for it. The alternative is unacceptable.
