Feingold: GOP "Shameless" Obstruction of Surveillance Bill
Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI) reacting to yesterday's goings-on:
"The conduct of Senate Republicans yesterday was shameless. After weeks of insisting that it is absolutely critical to finish the FISA legislation by February 1, even going so far as to object to a one-month extension of the Protect America Act, they obstructed all efforts to actually work on the bill. Now they want to simply ram the deeply flawed Intelligence Committee bill through the Senate.
"They refused to allow amendments to be offered or voted on, including my straight-forward amendment to require that the government provide copies of FISA Court orders and pleadings for review in a classified setting, so that Members of Congress can understand how FISA has been interpreted and is being applied. If the Republicans succeed in cutting off debate on Monday, the Senate won't even get to vote on the amendment Senator Dodd and I want to offer to deny retroactive immunity to telecom companies that allegedly cooperated with the administration's illegal wiretapping program.“Democrats should not allow the Republicans to ram this bill through the Senate without amendments. Monday's cloture vote will be a test of whether the majority is willing to stand up to the administration and stand up for our rights."

Unfortunately, the Democratic Party lacks the common sense, ethics and morality to stop the Repukes and Bush. This entire congress makes me want to vomit, and then emigrate elsewhere.

This is crazy! Didn't the Democrats become in charge of Congress with their majority status last Jan.? TAKE CHARGE!! Those Democrats not voting with Feingold and Dodd should be exposed if they are taking money from those companies in volved in ILLEGAL wiretapping. Illegal means AGAINST THE LAW!! If their vote is being bought, they should hit the front page of every newspaper and on every newscasts in their states. I haven't heard the telecomms offering information for the conviction of those involved or even what they did. Immunity should be granted for a quid pro quo that results in pertinent information. What information has the telecomms offered? When was the last time (execpt Libby) you saw a citizen absolved when they have COMMITTED a crime? Unless they were connected. In my opinion, telecomm companies are the slime of all industries. With insurance and pharmaceuticals copming in right behind. Our country is F'd UP.

Unfortunately, that's a test that has been failed so many times (even though it is always the same question asked and even though it is taken open book, with cheat sheets) that it's predictability has become its own force of nature. Like the tides. Or decomposition.

I will take all bets on the Democrats caving! Here is an idea Russ..walk up to McConnell and punch the sh!t out of him. After that he may have a different attitude! Stop the pleasanties to the "fine honorable gentleman" and start getting tough! Bunch of wussies!

Oh yeah, thanks Russ for voting against your party and letting Mukasey's nomination go forward....did you HOPE that we forgot?

Hey Russ STFU and get your boy REID on board otherwise you're as full of crap as he is.
Now I know why the dem symbol is the jackass.

I was so full of hope when the Dems too control of the house and senate. I stifled my common sense in favor of hope. I should have listened to my inner reasoning, as it was dead on. this is nothing more than blue mafia vs red mafia.
I now look at politics as similar to pro wrestling. everyone knows how it will turn out, yet we still root for one or the other so we can have bragging rights that 'my team won', where in reality, the big businesses win and the rest of us lose, and lose big.

To be fair, the Democrats don't really have a majority -- Liebertoad isn't really a Democrat. But Reid has got to be the worst strategist EVER. I don't even know why he brought this stupid bill to the floor, and I don't understand how the Goopers were able to block amendments to the bill once it was there. And I don't know how he lets TWELVE purported Democrats vote down the judiciary committee bill. TWELVE!!!!!
I can't tell whether the Democrats need steel rods up their spines or their asses.

Hey Steve, what the hell are you talking about? Feingold voted against Mukasey

How about Harry Reid growing some balls and using his power to block anything the Democrats object to?
How about winning the election by standing up for the constitution? Or, even losing it by standing up for the constitution?
The Constitution: The laws of this nation that "devout Christian" George W. Bush put his hand on the bible and lied to God he would protect.

Give Russ Feingold credit. He's one of the few down there that has any clue of what the hell they're supposed to be doing.
The problem is that there's no creditable Congress, Justice Dept, or Judiciary that's going to listen to a word that he has to say. It's like saying "let me out" after the door of the gaschamber has already closed behind you.
They didn't stop Hitler with words.

The twelve that voted with the Republicans ought to be targeted for replacement. Top on that list should be Barbara Mikulski.

Welcome to the one party state folks. This senate is going to give the telecoms immunity. It is a safe bet to oppose immunity, but they all know the deal: immunity must happen.

The argument over FISA seems be to a continuation of the old good cop bad cop routine. Democrats will cave and fail the American people as well as the Constitution and the rule of law yet again, unless Dodd, Fiengold and others stand their ground and filibuster the hell out of this legislation. By the way Barack, Hillary, grow any balls yet? At least can you break away from your stella campaigns do something positive other than running your mouths about how your going to create or believe in change?

I'm willing to forfeit a money award. What the telcos and ISPs did was criminal IMHO. Conspiring to deprive a United States Persons of their 4th and 14 amendment right rights. 10 years per incident.
(That would be illegal search and equal protection)

I'm with habanero!
This latest round of f***ery has wrecked my livelihood for 2 years running and driven me to the brink of bankruptcy.
It's a little late to throw me and millions of new-working-poor a little 4-figure biscuit and expect us to get over it and be happy.
I'll pass on the "stimulus", thanks -- just make Harriet and Karl show up and spill, and I'll call it a day.

The problem with Russ Feingold (and Dodd, too, for that matter) is that he's in the wrong party. The Democrublican party; and they don't like malcontents like Russ meddling in their politico-corporatist endeavors. What did you expect? That Reid was going to accommodate Feingold? Get real.

You know every single one of us who makes a comment right now is being monitored, don't you? This is serious stuff. It seems quite clear that if these lawsuits against these companies happen then the defense is going to expose the full range of criminality by this administration. "Impeachmetn is off the table" for good reason. I's worse than we think..

So what? Please remember all who have sacrificed their lives for the ideals of this nation even though they were misled about what they were really fighting for.
If we as citizen's can't stand up for our rights, then they will not exist.
Civil rights are like muscles; if you don't use them ,they atrophy. As the IBM tv ad says,'stop talking, start doing'.
Please remember-though it's not taught anymore- 'the price of liberty is eternal vigilance'; and yes, I know it's a one party -the corporate party-system but who ever said that democracy was easy?

This is why it makes no sense to me that Feingold has been trashing Edwards (the only top-tier Dem in the pres. race to bring up the FISA bill) and yet he continues to tout the bona fides of Clinton and Obama. Neither one had the integrity to get their butts back to D.C. to support Feinglod and Dodd. When it comes to the constitution, HRC and BO are both poseurs.

How can you use this to defend Edwards--Dems would still have non-lieberman majority if he hadn't bailed from the Senate!

Timmons: "How about Harry Reid growing some balls and using his power to block anything the Democrats object to?"
How about Obama growing some balls and using his consensus building and powerful spirit to get Reid removed from his position?
Or just getting legislation passed to bring the troops home?
Or just getting legislation passed to thwart Telecom immunity?
What is he waiting for?
Why won't he demostrate the formidible skills he claims he has right now - why do we have to "just trust him" to do it if we give him the presidency?
American's trusted the current president who said "trust me" without demonstrating any facts or ability to back up that request for trust and now we have a candidate who does the same.

Timmons: "Or, even losing it by standing up for the constitution?"
Yes, clearly the best way to protect the Constitution is to lose elections.
ROFL!
That must be Obama's plan.
It sure isn't Clinton's or Edward's - they are actually campaigning against Bush and the GOP.
All Obama can do is campaign against Clinton and his own party.
Consensus building begins at home.
Obama has failed that test.

That's just further proof that the corporate controlled American government is scared of the American people.
You don't have to be a blind conservative not to see it, just an ignorant one to deny it.

Everybody keeps talking about Telco companies. But the real reason for this bill, is to hand over more congressional power to the president.
Maybe there won't be a senate to worry about soon.

Garfield: "Dems would still have non-lieberman majority if he hadn't bailed from the Senate!"
Obviously you can't count.
It takes a majority of 60, not 1, to be effectively in control of the Senate.
Edwards' presence in the Senate would not produce results any different than the results currently being produced (or not produced).
