Lott Opens New Lobbying Shop

Surprise, surprise. From Roll Call (sub. req.):

Putting weeks of speculation to rest, former Sens. Trent Lott (R-Miss.) and John Breaux (D-La.) confirmed Friday they plan to file paperwork next week to form a powerful lobbying partnership called The Breaux Lott Leadership Group....

“This is not a well kept secret to say the least,” Lott said. “We’ve worked together for many years in the House and Senate and in the leadership together in the Senate. We thought it was a good opportunity and a fun opportunity to work together.

“We start next Monday and we’re hoping to find some business.”...

While Breaux left the Senate three years ago, Lott abruptly resigned his seat late last year — a move that fueled speculation that he wanted to leave his post before new, stricter lobbying restrictions took effect.

Once again with a Republican, the most cynical possibility turns out to be right. Wouldn't it be neat if a hard-core liberal wins the special election? Yes I know, we're talking about Mississippi.

Maybe now the old Klanner can make some real moolah, afford himself a better hairpiece.

avatar

Congratulations to Lott!

Yes, I live these small gov't. Republicans who go on welfare, too precious.

avatar

but the point in retiring in 2007 was to avoid the new stricter regulations, which prohibit him from lobbying for two years. Under the old regulation, he is still prohibited for one year. Does the story bring that up?

avatar

Hopefully obama will be president in 09, the dems will have a filabuster proof majority in the senate or close enough with moderate republicans, and . . .. . then poor old racist lott will be out of a job because of badly, badly, badly needed lobbying reform. Darn. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

avatar

So tell me, along@6:48, what do you think about Lott's quote, "We start next Monday and we’re hoping to find some business"? Why does he use the word "we" if he is barred from lobbying?

avatar

Same-ol' same-ol', no big changes in '09, everything done in increments, Trent is set for life. Too bad for us commoners.

avatar

Along: Read the story. It does bring that up.

Rebel: Along wasn't saying that Lott is subject to the new rules. S/he was asking if the article mentions that that is the reason why Lott retired -- which it does, in the last sentence.

avatar

Along, I misinterpreted. Carry on.

Dan: Sometimes I have been able to access Roll Call stories on the day they're posted, even without a subscription, but this one is not accessible. That's why I asked Paul, hoping he would elaborate.

If the regulation does apply to him (and I have no reason to think it doesn't), I figure that even though they're founding the lobbying shop today, our good ol' boy Trent will probably be engaged in "fundraising" for his new company for a year, not "actual" lobbying for outside clients.

avatar

Sounds like Unity '08 has its lobby shop of choice in place....

THIS is why Krugman is right about Obama. These people are all about $$$.

avatar

Maybe someday nobody in the congress will be interested. Wouldn't that be nice? I hear they are hiring at McDonalds and Starbucks.

avatar

Oh yeah, I remember Breaux, the crooked cocksucker, he's as bent as a 3-dollar bill so Lott is in good company. Their "firm" will be a shining example of everything wrong with our system of government.

avatar

The real reason Lott resigned is because
Larry Flynt received alot of tips about
Lott's bisexual behavior. This info was posted on the BIG HEAD DC blog in late
November. Larry Flynt acknowledged this after receiving inquiries from BIG HEAD DC.
Lott liked to hang out with a gay call boy(s).

I see how he will be useful. He can show the newbies how the pay for play, aka bribery, system works on the hill. He can help them avoid the pitfalls of unprofessional bribers like Jack Abramoff.

Vice, leaning on the arm of Crime

Lott and Breaux, arm in arm, thick as thieves, raking in the big bucks by trading on their years of "public service". Almost makes you wish that we won't probably end up with some Truth and Reconciliation Commission, rather than a good, old-fashioned, honest guillotine on the Mall.

avatar

Lott doing this is no surprise at all. I'm a bit taken aback at learning that Breaux is a shameless whore though. Probably shouldn't be, but I expected a tad more from him.

avatar

No one could have predicted that Trent Lott would cash in on his Senate career.

avatar

giggle. Thanks, blog. funny.
btw, I understand the ignorance and blatant racism in Mississippi but why is Louisiana politics so corrupt?

avatar

I get misty eyed when I watch a whore retiring to be a ...whore.

avatar

Who do you think he is going to be lobbying for? Chinese toy manufacturers? Water board makers? Pedophiles?

Because really, with Republicans there is no bottom.

avatar

This is sick. Obama is the only candidate who will truly try to do anything to break the lobbyist stranglehold on our government.

We want change! The Bush/Clinton/Bush/Clinton spin cycle is not working anymore. Hillary's most important "experience" at not making change was messing up healthcare reform in the early nineties, voting for the war in Iraq, and most recently just a few weeks ago proving she hasn't learned a thing by voting for the Bush warmongering bill to declare Iran's military to be "terrorists." Unlike Hillary, Obama was right on Iraq from the start. He is a unifier, not a divider. United we stand, divided we fall. No unity, no change. It's that simple.

Something about that tie just SCREAMS 'gay televangelist'. Where's the religious tracts?

The One Year Ban prohibits direct contact with former Senate colleagues, but does not prohibit supervising others who make such contacts, or contacts with the House or the Sdministration.
