Rep. Jerry Lewis: The Million Dollar Man

Congratulations to Rep. Jerry Lewis (R-CA) lawyers! They've surpassed $1 million in legal fees from the lawmaker.

Lewis, long-time TPMmers will remember, has been under federal investigation since the spring of 2006 for his ties to defense contractor and convicted criminal Brent Wilkes and lobbyist buddy Bill Lowery.

Since June of 2006, Lewis has paid just over $1 million in campaign funds to some heavy-hitters at the law firm Gibson, Dunn, and Crutcher, according to campaign disclosures. A $62,000 payment on December 12th last year put him over the top.

The Lewis probe has reportedly slowed in the last year, and his fees reflect that -- Lewis spent $900,000 in 2006 and only about $100,000 this year. Maybe with the Wilkes conviction, things will heat up again?

He did it for money so it is appropriate that he die broke. Give it all to your lawyers Jerry; it is fitting that you do so. You could have just hidden the money and gone to jail you know?

How is it legal to use campaign funds for legal fees?

Sounds like bribe money $$$$$$$$$$$$

It's rather gratifying to see how much it's costing him for lawyers.

iirc, his low legal bill is because of the US Attorney's scandal--wasn't Carol Lam breathing down his neck right before she got fired?

Now that Mukasey has taken over the Justice Dept. Jerry Lewis can breathe a little easier.

It's hard to keep all the scandals straight, but a really stinky thing about this case is that one of the prosecutors working on this case in the U. S. Attorney's office got hired away by the law firm that is representing Lewis. (Of course everything is completely above board because she won't be working on his defense. *Choke*) There were two stories about this in the L.A. Times a while back, but otherwise not much press.

It wasn't Lam's office that was handling this case - Lam was the San Diego office and Lewis is being investigated in the L.A. area.

No sympathy for one of the most avaricious critters to ever take a seat in congress. I hope the swine spends a lot of years as the bitch of someone named Roofie at one of Californias fine penitentiaries.
