Tenet Lawyers Up

From Newsweek:

George Tenet, who was CIA director when the tapes were made, will be represented by former FBI general counsel Howard Shapiro. Roy Krieger, a Washington lawyer who has represented about 100 CIA employees, says that two agency officers have approached him about representation, though neither has retained him yet.

For the CIA spooks involved, cost is a serious issue. Krieger says legal expenses for each employee could reach "hundreds of thousands" of dollars; the CIA will not foot the bill. In anticipation of just such a scenario, however, the agency some years ago began encouraging its employees to purchase special liability-insurance policies from Wright & Co., a Virginia firm that specializes in coverage for government investigators. A Wright spokesman had no response to questions about whether claims have been filed for legal fees in connection with the tapes inquiry.

My bet is that there is testimony before congress in exchange for immunity similar to the Ms. Goodling testimony that expressed where people 'crossed the line' amd that that gives the impression that the Whitehouse was behind it all and that the Congress and Senate was shocked, I mean shocked to find out that this was happening!

I bet that most skate and that a symbolic scapegoat is made.

user-pic

I wonder who the leading candidates for "symbolic scapegoat" would be?

user-pic

To Califlander

Somebody uninvolved, and unresponsible

it isn't a scapegoat unless that is the case...

and all the major participamts have lawyered up and saw this as an outcome long ago.. allowing the opportunities for diffusing responsibility for quite some time

I thought W's tort reform ended their need to lawyer up. Did they forget something?

Some of what's going on with the lawyering up and Hillary weeping might be explained by the London Sunday Times' Sibel Edmonds story. It takes a lot of neo-con shenangins back to the Clinton era. Here is Justin Raimondo's take on it:

Pretty scary.

user-pic

Maybe Gonzo & John Yoo should offer their services, pro bono.

More on the Sibel Idmonds story: Brad Friedman and other jump in. Nothing on the American corporate media or muddle of the road blogosphere.

Make above Edmonds.

If the military still has conscientious members who'd rather resign than go along with Bush's torture policies, there's still hope for our country. Please, God.....Thank you.

user-pic

These CIA tapes might contain torture, but that's not why they are a problem. It's also not why Kean/Hamilton started making such a fuss saying they didn't know they existed. [You can bet Zelikow knew if even somehow they didn't] and he was in charge of the committee.

No, torture is already admitted to. The problem with these tapes isn't how the accused Al qaeda members confessed. It's what they said. These tapes do not back up the official story, or they wouldn't have been destroyed. They certainly aren't valid confessions.

Merryl - I'm pretty sure Zubaydah said that General Ahmad of the ISI wired Atta the $100k.

Truth Commission

Ironic how CIA bought inusrance (or had the option to do so) as there was a realization that the truth was an ongoing narrative and that the future was a set of propositions and assertions.

It is the politicians whom are having the greatest difficulty with the emerging narrative, I would suggest that genuinely 'intelligent' CIA had a grasp of the concept and the 'unintended consequences' and the concept of a 'put option' or indemnity insurance long before the 'idealogues' gave it any thought.

I think that the real rub is between 'idealogues' and 'professionals' and the 'themes' and the 'acts.'

There should always be an objective analysis of what is actionable and what is policy, there being a long-standing policy to overthrow Saddam, versus coercion of a theme based line of inquiry, and using that as fact.

Oh please tell us the facts that support our assertion, and BTW, do us a favor and signature your names to the facts.

Leaving me to recall: "Be careful who's ego you stroke, you might have to clean up the mess!"

LOL.. hand out Kleenex

Court Is Asked to Bar Detainees From Talking About Interrogations
By Carol D. Leonnig and Eric Rich
Washington Post Staff Writers

The Bush administration has told a federal judge that terrorism suspects held in secret CIA prisons should not be allowed to reveal details of the "alternative interrogation methods" that their captors used to get them to talk. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit is
considering whether Guantanamo detainees have the right to challenge their imprisonment in U.S. courts. The government urged Walton to defer any decision on access to lawyers until the higher court rules.

The government filing expresses concern that detainee attorneys will provide their clients with information about the outside world and relay information about detainees to others. In an affidavit, Guantanamo's staff judge advocate, Cmdr. Patrick M. McCarthy, said that in one case a detainee's attorney took questions from a BBC
reporter with him into a meeting with a detainee at the camp.

Such indirect interviews are "inconsistent with the purpose of counsel access" at the prison, McCarthy wrote.

Dorn said in the court papers that for lawyers to speak to former CIA detainees under the security protocol used for other Guantanamo detainees "poses an unacceptable risk of disclosure." But detainee attorneys said they have followed the protocol to the letter, and none has been accused of releasing information without government clearance.

Brad, Sibel, and Luke!

Kudos for all of your efforts and others to try and overcome one of the largest criminal conspiracies on our planet I'm betting. If you also go to this youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wei_hJdwkxY

and note how Henry Waxman tries to avoid dealing with the Sibel Edmonds hearing question from multiple questioners there, it shows you what we're up against!.

WeAreChangeLA confronts Rep. Henry Waxman
Waxman attended a town hall meeting at the Westside Pavilion Landmark Theater building in Santa Monica, CA, where he spoke to over one hundred attendees, then answered questions.

Peter Thottam - bcimpeach.com - passionately denounced Rep. Waxman's excuses for not impeaching the Bush Administration.

During the question and answer period, Rep. Waxman is bombarded with question after question concerning Sibel Edmonds (the gagged FBI Whistleblower) and other issues related to the treasonous crimes of 9/11.

Waxman, U share commanalities with our Commander-in-THIEF: you really do think we're stupid. U state "impeachment of the prez/vp will negatively impact
democrats chance 4 winning the presidential election!WHAT the hell R U talking about!
wow with dems like this who needs darth cheney?? This guy is dirty.... he admits to not reading HR 1955

maybe im just a dumb soldier, but is this a common practice? to pass bills you havent read? if it is ... we are in alot of trouble!

Waxman shows he has no intention to uphold the Constitution! His oath of office says nothing about how easy/difficult it is to uphold the Constitution.
Support only those Demos who support Kucinich's H. Res 799 calling for a congressional inquiry into impeachment of Cheney. Vote against Cheney and war defender Pelosi and vote for Cindy Sheehan.

Been a very busy few weeks here, but I'm following this story closely on Bradblog... and doing a google news search every few hours to see if any media outlets in the US have picked it up.

So far it's being reported in European and Middle Eastern papers, but I still don't see a US report - gee, wonder why?

user-pic

The India Times broke the story of General Ahmad of the ISI wiring Atta the $100k. Whatever Zubaydah may have said becomes worthless once he was tortured. I think that's WHY he was tortured.

user-pic

merryll, usual suspect Lee Hamilton has a history of covering up crimes for others dating back as far as Iran/contra, if not further. There's no doubt in my mind that he knew plenty during his term on the 9/11 commission. That's how he got the appointment. Iran/contra is a good study in how the powers that be manage to undermine investigations.
