Renzi: I Will Stay and Fight!
Thirty-five counts won't keep Rick Renzi down. The Arizona congressman will not step down in the face of a federal indictment handed down last Friday, he announced in a press release late Monday evening.
"“I will not resign and take on the cloak of guilt because I am innocent," the statement read. "My legal team. . .will handle these legal issues while I continue to serve my constituents."
Renzi is scheduled to be arraigned on March 6th.

Is he staying onboard the "straight talk express" as well?

This is great news. It always makes for some good comic relief when a republican criminal states they're innocent. It usually takes a couple of weeks before reality sets in. Any bets on when he decides to spend more time with his family?

OK, we're supposed to believe that under any circumstances the Bush Justice Dept. would indict Renzi on 35 counts if he wasn't guilty? 10 counts -- maybe. 15 counts -- I'm skeptical. 20 counts -- we're nearing the realm of not bloody likely. But 35 counts? No friggin' way.

I hope Renzi's judge bears his statements in mind at sentencing.

Personally, I blame it on Larry Craig. Ever since Craig proved unable to be "peer-pressured" to resign by the Republican Party Leadership, it's emboldened every other Republican representative who gets caught doing something bad.
