Mukasey to Tout DoJ Public Corruption Efforts

Maybe it's a coincidence. But a little more than a week after the U.S. Attorney for Los Angeles created a stir by disbanding his office's public corruption unit, Attorney General Michael Mukasey will be giving a speech in California "to highlight the Department's efforts to investigate and prosecute public corruption" according to a press release.

The speech, sponsored by the Commonwealth Club, will be given at the Intercontinental Hotel Grand Ballroom in San Francisco.

So if last week's move sent a message to California politicians, it seems Mukasey is striving to send the opposite one.

DOJ AG plans to enter the Los Angeles US Attorney's playground. A visit like this would presumably require DOJ Staff coordination with the local US Attorney, especially on issues of resource protection and various VIP issues. Indeed, DoJ AG's timing, would seem to answer the question whether DoJ AG, DOJ OLC, DoJ staff and the LA US Atty were or were not discussing public corruption issues before the disbandment decision was disclosed.

In anticipation of questions on personnel moves in LA, DoJ AG would presumably be on the same sheet as the US Atty. However, the defenders of the unit's disbandment are not discussing the DOJ-WH interests, but narrowly focusing on the merits of the public spin about that disbandment. There's a difference. The diversion appears deliberate.

AG's visit to the LA-area in the wake of this disbandment decision, raises the question (again): What were the real, unstated reasons for the unit's disbandment; and what coordination did DOJ OLC have with the White House before the unit was disbanded ? If you're interested in reading more, here's one theory behind the real reasons for the disbandment; and one basis to question those defending DoJ's spin to disband the ethics unit. Defending the spin, or defending the President and his loyalists?

Correction: DOJ AG is going to San Francisco, not LA.

I think that basically there will be a lot of "look, over here - Dem NY Gov on sex charges - never mind that old story about the Congressman behind the curtain" Maybe some strategerizing on any good left coast sex scandals involving Dems that they can use Roger Stone to help them highlight in advance of the elections. Add in some Big Stick presence to back up the new guy and make the lower level employees show some respect and fear and quit muttering.

I'm still not sure how you get more corrupt than to be the US AG and refuse to give a rats ass about Presidential torture - but it should be a lovely gathering for all the lovely people involved.

Ugh. DOJ makes me sick to my stomach. I hate reading about it--what a cesspool. People often debate what will be Bush's most memorable legacy---war, torture, recession--but I think it will be the wholesale trashing of the rule of law, enabled by a DOJ that is literally rotten to the core.

Once again, this shows the administration's lame duck disarray. You're supposed to give the speech praising some program or activity before you shut it down, not after.

How insane is it that the Department of JUSTICE is so backward-ass under Mukasey that Mukasey has to brag about the USA's being involved in public malfeasence and the corruption of the legal process in order to hide their REAL snafu's . . .

It was treason to install Mr. Mucous in the first place. Why does anyone expect anything of this piece of human garbage? He is a criminal and replaced a criminal, promising a group of idiots in the senate that he was going to uphold the law. No one is as ignorant as a senator that believed this traitor, and we can afford no ignorant bastards in our government again. No one in their right mind can believe any senator that voted for this person again, they are corrupt criminals for installing it. Our senate got down on their knees and installed a goon for the king when his last goon had to depart?
Stop dreaming this is a country any longer. We have a criminal thumbing his nose at the laws and congress will not act?

go figure.

Don't forget that SF was the home turf of "company man" Kevin Ryan, the loyal Bushie who was sacked for his complete incompetence.

Tellingly, he is now employed by the next-generation of SF DINO politicians, Gavin Newsom.

Also of interest is this post, regarding a top CA Repug who opposed the Martin firing, ostensibly because of Martin's sole competence--going after targeted CA Dems for...wait for it...corruption!

key graf:

Why, just coincidentally, Ryan was the federal prosecutor who, in the Fall of 2004 commenced a probe of California’s most powerful Democrat, Senate President Pro Tempore Don Perata. Launched on (literally) the first day of the Oakland Democrat’s leadership, Ryan’s effort - over two years later – has led to nothing but leaked headlines designed to embarrass the Democratic leader.
