All Muck is Local: Sex and Lots and Lots of Videotape

For days, Bruce Barclay's political career hung in the balance. The Republican commissioner of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, had been accused of rape -- by a man, no less -- and the police were bearing down. Barclay's lawyer issued a strong denial ("This accusation of rape is ludicrous It will be defended forever and is wrong."). But it was clear things were looking pretty dicey. Until... vindication! Well, sort of.

On March 31st, police, investigating the allegation of rape by the 20-year old Marshall McCurdy, obtained a warrant to search Barclay's home. They didn't find evidence of rape. But they did find videotapes of hundreds of sexual encounters with men that Barclay had filmed on high-tech surveillance cameras. The cameras were hidden inside AM/FM radios, motion detectors and intercom speaker systems, among other places. There was also one at his business office.

None of the subjects were aware they were being filmed and no permission had been obtained, Barclay admitted. According to a second warrant issued on April 9th, Barclay also admitted to hiring prostitutes on a weekly basis from the now-defunct website harrisburgfratboys.com.

On April 10th, the rape charges were dropped. One of the videos found during the search showed Barclay and McCurdy engaging in apparently consensual sex. As his lawyer put it:

"It is clear in my client's private life he has made an error of judgment. What is striking is this very same lack of judgment exonerates him from a rape allegation that wasn't going anywhere."

Sadly, his vindication was his undoing. Barclay was forced to resign.

And legally, Barclay's not quite out of the woods yet-- he's still facing possible charges for privacy violations and promoting prostitution. McCurdy, however, has been charged with making false reports to law enforcement authorities and unsworn falsifications to authorities. He's up for a possible 3-year prison stint and $7,500 in fines.

I think there is now enough video footage of these various GOPers for the first installment of "Republicans Gone Wild!"

Holy Bob Crane! "Videotapes of hundreds of sexual encounters"? I'm all for consensual sex among adults in any combination as long as it's in an appropriate setting. But what the fuck is it with the so-called morals and values GOP that brings out the freak in people?

OMFG! Another physical Rove(r) body double . . . Bush43 was lying to us (again) . . . The US Government is obviously experimenting with human-animal hybrid clones . . . Human-porine clones to be exact.

It's OK that he has to resign, he looks like he has a promising career as a Drew Carey impersonator.

avatar

Too bad he didn't have his way with Karl the way Karl has been having us way with the whole country.

What makes you so sure he didn't?

And as for this pretzel logic that an incedent of consensual sex proves conclusively somehow that there was never a rape on another occasion, excuse me, but consensual sex is a per-event issue, not an binding agreement that gives someone umlimited access.

Gosh, I wonder who's prosecuting the poor fellow. Talk about blaming the victim...

No doubt the defendant, McCurdy, has a lot of grounds for a civil suit against this creep, if he was videotaped without his permission, he ought to be able to leverage a deal by threatening a lawsuit on those grounds. Either way, if he actually dsoes get sent up, he should take this typical Republican hypocrite for all he is worth.

Republican commissioner? How many more Republicans are hiding in their closets?

avatar

apparently you didn't even bother reading the article.

the "incident of consensual sex" WAS the event in question (March 30, between 9:30 pm and 11:30 pm).

and the accuser has admitted that he was not raped and that he had made a false accusation.

Forgot to ask...
...was there any footage of Turdblossom in those files? He sure has a funny smile on his face.

((rrrriiiiinnnnnggggg...))

"Heritage Foundation. May I help you?"
.....
"Yes, we do have a new Fellow by the name of Bruce Barclay."
...
"I'm sorry, his office is in the process of being renovated per his specifications and I cannot transfer you to any of his personal recording devices."
....
"Oh, our apologies Mr Rove! Yes, thank you for your call, Mr Rove and we look forward to servicing you again."

Once again I am baffled as to why, once these men realize they are gay, they don't leave the Republican party.

Or, why they don't use the power they have to change the anti-gay animus within the party.

Heck, maybe Larry Craig or Barclay could have sought support from the Log Cabin Republicans (What's the deal with that name? What do log cabins have to do with being gay or Republican? Is it a Lincoln allusion?) to move the party toward accepting openly gay politicians within their ranks.

I just can't imagine the shame and fear these men live with.

Once again I am baffled as to why, once these men realize they are gay, they don't leave the Republican party.

Or, why they don't use the power they have to change the anti-gay animus within the party.

Because they hate themselves.

oKAY supposing jEFF Gannon was in some of those videos supposing that turdblossom was also in the videos - gee maybe if we could get the whitehouse logs released someday - would not that be something that pRESIDENT'S Bushes brain ( AKA Karl rOVE ) was found to be involved in some wide stance taking illegal PROSTITUTION activity-that was across state lines -that could be Mann Act violations .
The self loathing of these "closeted queers" is actually quite pathological. And all the while these skuzzbuckets beat up on the Gay Community -railing against gay marriage -which actually leads to horrible hate crimes like poor Matthew Shepard .
I mourn the lose of my poor Republican Party's soul .Me & Barry Goldwater would have not given a rats butt who you married - And me & Barry Goldwater would have never started an illegal war /occupation and had the PRC -(read that Godless commie bastards) pay for that illegal occupation with the credit card they issued to our COMMANDER & Chief ,,,
My wife and me have two very close friends ( actually extended family members ) that have been in a lesbian committed realtionships for many many years. You can bet this old redneck is going to be overwatching this couple until the bushcheney shit storm finally blows itself out ( and yes cheap pun here definately intended..) .

Oh, gee! I missed this news on CNN and MSNBC.

Of course! They had to talk about "elitist" Obama!! Much more important!

The auditorium at my high school was renamed the Bruce Barclay Auditorium after I graduated, because of all the alumni donations he made to my high school. Local wags have already started with all the jokes about the auditorium ("Students were asked to enter from the rear. It was a tight fit, especially when everybody came at once...").

Yes, the Log Cabin republicans is an allusion to the idea (myth?) that Lincoln was the first gay president. I believe this was borne from the fact that he did share a bed with another man for a time although that was supposedly common in that era.

As far as these hundreds of videotapes, how has turd blossom now shown up? It's unreal what this administration has been able to get away with, and the fact that the whole Jeff Gannon thing never led anywhere is actually quite amazing and a testament to how successful this White House (or incompetence of the MSM) has been.

Unreal.

Somewhere, Dick Wolf is smiling, because that's one more episode of Law and Order that practically writes itself.

Fred Thompson cameo

Genghis: I know you hate me for supporting Obama. But, could you at least agree that the photo of Barclay and Rove would turn any gay folk into straight folk. Yuck!

I would hope that in one videotape we would be treated to a tableaux of our Hero, clad only in a cartoonishly oversized baby diaper, clutching to his guns and his religion while kneeling in a sea of used and discarded amyl nitrate poppers.

And thus was reality nudged ever closer to Margaret Atwood's distopian vision of the future.

He was the county commissioner in Cumberland Co PA, where I live. This came as no suprise to the local folks: I asked my boss - a diehard Republican - when the story first broke, if he'd heard about Bruce Barclay's problems, and he immediatley suspected that he'd been accused of raping a young boy. Apparently it was well known that he had a predeliction towards youngs males; I've heard since that he had numerous male foreign exchange students and used to have the local boys swim team over to his house for sleepovers. I can't prove this is true, but, again, this was told to me by local Republicans.

I've got to ask. All these closeted, self-loathing Republican gays who are such virulent attackers of homosexuals in public ...

Is this what the psychologists mean by projection? They loath themselves, so they attack others who they presume are just as guilty of their own greatest failure/sin?

That would make very strong attacks on homosexuals a strong indicator of a likely repressed, pathological homosexual doing the attacking. When someone starts strongly attacking Gays, perhaps they should themselves be asked if they are trying to fight homosexual urges themselves and using the attacks on others as a way of dealing with their own urges.

It's OK, as long as he doesn't try to marry the boy.

From Bruce Barclay's (Google-cached) bio page: www.brucebarclay.com/bio.html

"Bruce Barclay resides in Monroe Township. He has hosted 17 international high school exchange students in the past ten years."

That doesn't sound good...

Cumberland Valley High School just had weekend performance of Peter Pan...guess who had a full page ad in the program? Bruce Barclay!!!!!!

If I were the police officer assigned to review the "evidence" and I came across one with Rove in it, I swear I would sacrifice my career to publish it on the internet. I would consider it my patriotic duty.

having a hard (ahem) time drinking coffee and not spraying the front of screen !

I loved the auditorium story !

Karl Rove eh? Jeff Gannon at the WH? Let TPM dig up the dirt on that situation. Who was he there for?

I would love to be a fly in the oral err oval office. sorry couldn't help it folks.

OMIGAWD!
I've read the word 'self-loathing' many times in the comments. I have another 'analysis.'

This man looks like an extremely dull person. He might get extreme excitement not so much from the sex but from the danger involved. He was conscious of that fact that his whole life could come unraveled by what he was doing. Remember an Italian comedy about a man who could only have sex on window ledges of high buildings etc. because he needed the danger aspect to excite him.

Condolences to all his sex-partners. They are the ones suffering from self-loathing.

avatar

what shame or fear? being a republican is about having for yourself and not letting others have any. whether it's money or underage boys.

avatar
(What's the deal with that name? What do log cabins have to do with being gay or Republican? Is it a Lincoln allusion?)

Maybe it's a thinly veiled allusion to their love of the rectum. It seems that Mr. Barclay was fond of spending time in "The Log Cabin." I can't stop laughing. "Log Cabin Republicans", it all makes so much sense now.

avatar

If Bob Allen is 10 out of 10 diapers on the Republican Sex Scandal Scale, then this is a solid 8.  He resigned too fast, so he's not in Larry Craig territory, but taping sexual encounters and hiring toy boys isn't too shabby.
