Bill to Reform Northern Marianas Moves to Senate

Unbelievably, there's still some unfinished business from the Jack Abramoff years. From ABC News:

A bill to reform the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) immigration system will be introduced on the Senate Floor today, addressing more than a decade of mounting concerns about the exploitation of workers, sex trafficking and porous borders and years of political maneuvering by convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

"After fighting for these reforms for many years, we are now closing the legal loopholes that had allowed some of the poorest men and women to be abused and exploited in sweatshops in this American territory," said Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., who has championed the fight for CNMI reform since the 1990s.

The bill would extend U.S. immigration laws to the CNMI and establish a federally administered guest worker program in the American territory.

If you're wondering where Abramoff is these days, he's still serving out his sentence for defrauding investors in his purchase of a fleet of gambling boats, but has yet to be sentenced for his bribes to lawmakers. That's because he's still cooperating with prosecutors, who've repeatedly requested a delay for his sentencing since he's got more to give (as Rep. John Doolittle (R-CA) and Tom DeLay know full well).

The Abramoff thing has been squelched, it's a nonstory, regardless of the fact that had it been brought to light it would have brought down the administration. Bush appointed Alice Fisher to make the whole thing go away, and she has done a bang-up job of it. DeLay especially has nothing to fear.

Correct. "Still cooperating" is shorthand for biding time in jail, appearing to cooperate. He's not cooperating.

Abramoff is just another presidential pardon in the chain of many to come at the end of George W. Bush's administration.

You don't have to be a blind conservative not to see it, just an ignorant one to deny it.

Nothing about Abramoff's and Delay's influence to get the US Attorney recalled because he was investigating the Governor. If this administration doesn't go down as the most dispicable in our country's history the historians must belong to the Heriotage Foundation and are complete hacks.

Ummm, guys? Are you sure that picture is of Jack Abramhoff?

That's Abramoff, all right. He's only 49 now, you know. And this picture must be at least two years old.

Believe it or not (and I know I find it tough), there are Republicans who don't have slicked-back, badly cut hair and even own and wear casual clothes that aren't from the Sansabeltâ„¢ section of the store.

And, even though I hate to think about it, just about all Republicans are naked under their clothes. (shudder)

DKos blogger dengre has regularly documented the Abramoff 65 crooks, liars, thieves, and other slime, highlighting crimes in the Commonwealth of the Marianas. Only 100,000 people but so much has gone wrong, not the least of which are the 750,000 documents John McCain is sitting upon. The Marianas are a microcosm of the corruption that is rampant in our government. Check out dengre's work.
