Get Fitzgerald!

Call it a missed opportunity. The Chicago Tribune reports this morning that Ali Ata, a former official from Gov. Rod Blagojevich's (D) administration who's pleaded guilty to corruption charges, will testify that Tony Rezko told him that he had an inside track to getting U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald canned.

This all apparently happened back in 2004, when the Rezko investigation was just getting off the ground. Now Rezko is on trial for rigging state boards for contracts. And Ata will apparently testify that Rezko told him that Bob Kjellander, a connected Republican who's currently vice chairman of the Republican National Convention, "was working with Karl Rove to have Mr. Fitzgerald removed."

Now, at the time, Rove would have had his own reasons to see Fitzgerald canned -- he'd just been tapped in December, 2003 as the special counsel to investigate CIA agent Valerie Plame's outing. But that would sure have been a bold move even for Rove. We've put in a call to Rove's lawyer Robert Luskin and we'll let you know if he responds.

This was not the last time that an administration official might have mulled firing Fitzgerald. Former chief of staff to Alberto Gonzales Kyle Sampson testified last year that he'd suggested canning the U.S. attorney in a conversation in the White House with Harriet Miers and her deputy in 2006. The two of them "just looked" at him, he said. When asked why he'd suggested it, Sampson testified that maybe it was just to "get a reaction out of them."

Update: Luskin responds to Tribune:

"Karl has known Kjellander for many years, but does not recall him or anyone else arguing for Fitzgerald's removal. And he (Rove) is very certain that he didn't take any steps to do that, or have any conversations with anyone in the White House -- or in the Justice Department -- about doing anything like that.''

During the course of my reading on this mess, I found it interesting that long time Republican Illinois State Rep Lee Daniels had a PAC called the Friends Of Lee Daniels PAC.

Supposedly, this PAC used it's excess funds to invest in a bio-pharma company called Photogen. It just so happens that it was Stuart Levine's company.

It doesn't sound legit, even though it may be allowed.

Isn't that interesting. Here's a wild eyed theory- what if The US Attorney firings was something like a play for pay deal- Rove might have done it for anyone who could pay the freight...

I have forgotten the details on the investment, but the only reason Lee Daniels isn't in the Crowbar Hotel is that the statute of limitations ran out on his crimes. He was forced down from being House Minority Leader by the investigation and his top operative was jailed, but didn't flip in time to get Daniels.

I know it's not directly related to this story but I am sick and tired of hearing about JUST Barack Obama and Blageovich being having this Rezko guy fundraise for them.

Ex-Governor Jim Edgar and our very own President, George W. Bush ALSO had Rezko fundraise for them.

In fact, Bush got the most money out of all of them.

Hey Republicans, are you SURE you want to pursue this Rezko thing?

Funny, but this info registers with me like proof that Obama is not closeley associated with Rezko.

Tangent: I think Patrick Fitzgerald would make the perfect Attorney General. Not for Obama specifically, but for the entire country. No one would be better at improving DoJ morale, gaining the people's trust, and investigating crimes from previous administrations.

Plus the guy is non-partisan, smart, a truth teller, and a non-leaker. Man crush.

He might have thought that Rove would help them, but with Fitzgerald already tapped to investigate the Plame case, there is no way in hell that Rove ever returned that call. I'm sure he told them to never bring up the idea again.

Rove is a criminal, but I'd be very suprised if he was stupid enough to even entertain going after Fitzgerald.

The plot thickens. Q: Which DoJ is more likely to indict the current criminal enterprise posing as a presidency? Sen Clinton's or Sen Obama's?

avatar

A: I predict that neither one of them will go after any of them. We'll hear, "We should move forward and not stay mired in the past."

Clinton's Obliteratti would simply pick up where W left off.

Rove acts like he does because here in Texas, that sort of thing is standard operating procedure. This is how these Bush people can think a Monica Goodling, an opposition researcher, has the authority to fire Justice attorneys. The Texas Republican party is its own little totalitarian regime. Here's the thing: Rove is an opposition researcher. He uses the White House to continue his opposition research activities, and his staff status grants him access to new channels of info and influence. It's like what Hannah Arendt said about totalitarian style: if you don't like the law that obstructs you, you ignore, decriminalize, or re-write the law. This is why it is so important for them to get immunity for AT&T others in the NSA data mining: so it can be used for enhanced oppo.

coonsey's right. Tony Rezko contributed to any pol he thought could advance his business interests. By and large, it seems he struck out. But it's clear to me the man understands Chicago politics. As Mike Royko distills it: Ubi Est Mea? "Where's Mine?"

Here's my gut feeling: Look at all the Illinois pols falling to corruption charges. Ex-governor George Ryan is already in the clink. The sharks are circling Rod Blagojevich and his hair. The Hired Truck and city patronage scandals. Mayoral scion Pat Daley indicted in a sewage contract scandal. Tony Rezko is just another crook being turned into a tool. What we're seeing is the biggest prosecutorial chess game Chicago has seen since Capone's days. The endgame is Mayor Richard Daley. Mark my words, when this is done, we'll see Da Mare indicted, and if it isn't the biggest thing since Operation Greylord, it'll be bigger.

And really, I don't have any problem with that.

And he (Rove) is very certain that he didn't take any steps to do that, or have any conversations with anyone in the White House -- or in the Justice Department -- about doing anything like that.''

"Very certain" = not positive
"Any steps" = a jog (which he never does)
"Any conversations" = but did send emails
"Like that" = I'm not talking about 'that', just things 'like that'.

Rove had an errand boy to the DOJ.

I noticed a 2003 multi-million dollar fundraiser for GW. Rezko seemed confined to Illinios through the 1980s and 1990s. On what date did Rezko first meet Republican fundraiser Levine?

Did Rove have any dealings with Levine?

If Rove is slippery enough to get by with parsing words, his ability to make money at universities and respected circles will be compromised. He's been heckled at public speeches. Imagine his shame if he's got any. I hope he has tons of money to keep Luskin on his payroll.

Sometimes its worse than a prison sentence. Look at former Atty Gen. Gonzales. His income is suffering from being ignored.

Sometimes shame is worse than an indictment.

I'd be cheering if Fitz takes down Governor Blagojevich. Gov. Rod is as arrogant, autocratic and incompetent as George W. Bush. He pulls one stunt after another with no concern for the cost.

Kjellander known here in Illinois as KJ, is a very sleazy operative that has been around since his College Republican days back in the early 70's. He has been associated with every Republican Governor the state has had since then. He was a campaign manager for Big Jim Thompson, did fund raising for Jim Edgar and was up to his ears in the Ryan fiasco. Just before he took his current job at the RNC he did a short stint in the Ryan administration. He was there just long enough to be in charge of a large state investment fund, which he passed on to a buddies investment firm and took a cozy couple of million dollars in fee's. He and Rove go way back to CR days and are cut from the same cloth. Never worked a day in their life just fed off of other peoples power.
