House Panel Calls Rove's Bluff

Sure, Karl Rove would looooove to testify to Congress about his role in the Don Siegelman prosecution, his lawyer told MSNBC. So the House Judiciary Committee is following up. From the AP:

The House Judiciary Committee is taking Karl Rove up on an offer to testify about claims that he influenced a federal corruption case against former Democratic Gov. Don Siegelman of Alabama.

The committee on Thursday asked former White House adviser Rove to appear under oath soon. The panel also wants the Justice Department's inspector general to investigate allegations that political motivations drove the Siegelman case and several other federal prosecutions during the Bush administration.

Rove has denied any involvement in the Siegelman prosecution. His attorney told MSNBC earlier this month that Rove would testify on the matter.

I think if you parse Karl's words carefully you will find his excuse for not showing up.

If he shows up and testifies I'd say it's time to start investing in porcine aviation...

Never. Gonna. Happen.

Rove, his lawyers and Bush's lawyers will drag this out as long as possible. He'll have to reschedule a few times due to "important prior commitments". Rove will eventually say "After further consultation my lawyers inform me that it is not in my best interest to testify at this time." Finally, Bush will pardon him and the whole point will be moot.

But it is a nice change to see Karl at least pretend to offer to cooperate.

His lawyer forgot to mention that he would be particularly glad to testify under a grant of immunity, but would otherwise be nonresponsive.

Bush will order him not to testify. Rove can then claim he wanted to spill his guts, but the POSTUS is his leader and it would be an act of treason to disobey the orders of "The Commander Guy". The time to go after Rove is after Bush is whacking weeds and tap dancing through rattlesnakes in Crawford, TX.
