All Muck Is Local: Young Guns
You often hear about the gloves coming off in politics, but this spring, in the heavily Republican 5th district of Pennsylvania, two GOP Congressional candidates set the standard.
Five days before the race, Derek Walker, a 32-year old financial planner and Eagle Scout, was charged with two felonies (burglary and criminal trespass) and four misdemeanors (including disorderly conduct and stalking), all stemming from an incident on August 25, 2007. According to the police complaint, Walker entered his ex-girlfriend's apartment while she was with another man, took a cell phone video of the two of them and remarked: ''This video is going to put an end to your job with the school district.' The ex, Kathleen Ferry, is a 6th grade math teacher.
Walker denied all charges, though admitted to The Progress News "that he had been at the apartment because he wanted to 'smooth things over' with the woman. He admitted to seeing his ex-girlfriend on the sofa with the man and commented, 'The school district will be disappointed in this.'"
A simple misunderstanding? Walker claimed the charge was completely political, and vowed to stay in the race, saying that it was "politics at its worst." Walker's campaign manager added "The alleged incident occurred over 250 days ago. It's very convenient that the DA, who's a Democrat, decided to conclude his investigation five days before the primary."
The next day, Walker published a letter on his website from Kathleen Ferry denouncing the "blatantly false rumors" and offering her endorsement and good luck. Was Walker the victim of a smear? The real culprit, in Walker's mind, was Matt Shaner, 28 year-old businessman, alleged drunk driver, and Walker's main competition.
The week before District Attorney William Shaw brought the charges, Walker ran a negative ad against Shaner, implying that due to a drunk driving incident, he was "unfit to serve in Congress":
Walker was sure that Shaner was behind Shaw's prosecution. Both men denied the accusation.
Shaw said, "this office is not being used in some political gamemanship.... It [the investigation] started well before anybody was running for office." He added that he "couldn't pick Matt Shaner out of a lineup."
And on Shaner's end? His campaign had gone to all the trouble of crafting an ad based on Walker's alleged break-in, but the charges had saved him the expense of airing it:
The Shaner campaign early Thursday morning said it planned to air a TV commercial about Walker and the August incident later that day. When the charges were filed, however, the campaign pulled the ad, citing a change in strategy and a desire to run a positive campaign.Walker ran another ad, publicly accusing Shaner of "conspiring behind closed doors to fix the election," but to no avail:
Although in the weeks leading up to the primary, the two young, aggressive campaigners had been the front runners, Shaner and Walker effectively disabled the other and each walked away with just 18% of the popular vote, and were respectively $1.2 mil and $265,000 shorter. Glenn Thompson, the Centre County Republican chairman, walked away with the win with 19% of the vote.

Let me get this straight. Walker can have a relationship, which I must assume includes fornication, with the teacher, but she can't do the same with another man. And the school district is going to be "disappointed" in this woman because she is fornicating, which isn't illegal in the U.S., with a man or men not her husband, just like Walker.
Good grief.

Bravo for the voting Republicans in Centre County, Pennsylvania. Apparently 64% of them refused to vote for either of these two clowns.
Of course, that doesn't say a whole lot for the 36% who still voted for them.

LOL. I can't believe this made it to Muckraker. I live in this district and it was truly amazing. I can't remember the last time local politics were so down and dirty.
I laughed every time the Shaner ads (There were two. Chris Exarcos ran one of his own) came on.
I couldn't believe Shaner was running so soon after the incident. Here's the story. Shaner got drunk, crashed his car (I think into a tree), left the scene and made his way home. When the police found the car and traced it back to Shaner, they went to his house. His wife answered the door and refused to let the police in. Shaner had her stalling the police at the door, while he called his friend, the new GOP District Attorney, Madeira, who told Shaner he couldn't help him, because he was, well, the District Attorney now and he should probably talk to his attorney. (I can't stop laughing about this).
The police were never able to get a Breathalyzer test, so they couldn't prove he was drunk. The ad is right. Shaner first told them he had been drinking, then later denied he ever said it at all. Then, he decided to come clean. He was charged and fined.
Some around here believe he and the local GOP knew that Peterson was going to retire. He wanted to run and the local GOP wanted to back him and that is why he finally told the truth. He needed to or the questions would be, "Were you or weren't you?" "Why did you hide in your house?" "Why did you feel the need to consult the District Attorney, before talking with police?"
Who knows why he finally told the truth. Personally, I think his father talked him into confessing. A lot of people like his father, Lance, but they don't like, nor do they trust Matt.
I love that last quote from Shaner's campaign deciding not to run the Walker ad, because they decided at the last minute to change tacks and go positive instead. LOLOLOL. Right. It was more like, the local press had already done the dirty work for him, so why spend more of his own money on the subject.
I was happy with our field, in the race. Three strong Democrats with experience. It's still not going to be an easy district for Dems to win. It was gerrymandered specifically to go Republican. We'll see. I would love for it to turn around.

Thanks, Maggie, for your input. The best is always getting it from someone "up close and personal!" BTW, from your mouth to God's ears in November!
