Schaffer Staffer Mum on Ties to Marianas Gov
Yesterday we detailed Republican Senate candidate Bob Schaffer's ties to the Northern Mariana Islands, Jack Abramoff's prize client, and particularly the islands' governor, Benigno Fitial.
The Denver Post followed up and put the question to Schaffer as to why he'd been so loyal to a little island territory thousands of miles away. The answer? Quit asking. From the Post:
Schaffer campaign manager Dick Wadhams declined Thursday to discuss his candidate's role in island politics. "The Denver Post continues its character assassination of Bob Schaffer," he said.

I hope Schaffer had a really, really good time in the Marianas because this story will not have a happy ending.

Let's not forget that Dick Wadhams is a GOP uber-operative. He's been described as an alternate Karl Rove, a key player in Colorado politics, and was on the George Allen "Macacca" campaign.
In other words, he is a questonably credible spokesman on the Marianas matter, or any others.

I wonder if Schaffer is happy that he brought this Marianas deal up?

Still, it's kind of nice to know that the GOP has their Bob Shrums, too -- campaign operatives who still get work no matter how disastrously they fail.

Disappointing dribble. I looked at the previous post with the letter from Schaffer supposedly on congressional letterhead...it's not! Try campaign letterhead. I still don't see where Schaffer has done anything illegal or wrong.
There's nothing sinister that I can find in my research. All articles state Schaffer didn't even know Abramoff. How is what Schaffer did wrong? He investigated claims and made an educated decision based on what he saw first-hand.

Fatchecker,
You really must check your facts. From yesterday's story: "The trip was nominally funded by the Traditional Values Coalition, though like all the other junkets to the islands, it was really organized by Abramoff." These Abramoff junkets were solely attended by Republicans (or their staffers) who later universally voted in favor of pro-Marianas legislation.
Remember, George Bush and Karl Rove didn't "know" Abramoff either.

Right on the money AF. And GWB didn't 'know' Jack either, as proved by the (destroyed by order of Dick Cheney) White House visitor's logs.

OK, lets be honest here, they bought him. The interesting issue is not the $$ but the sex. Tom Bob and friends were not going to the Marianas because its a garden spot and they didn't have to go there to accept the $$.
It has to be one or the other more likely both. Has anyone gone back and checked where his campaign funds are coming from???

To clarify your point, CNMI is littered with "red light" style entertainments that have the workimg girls in virtual slavery.
Meaning that the good, moral Members of Congress went to enjoy the victimized young ladies (or boys?). Without the prying eyes of the voters.

"The Denver Post continues its character assassination of Bob Schaffer"
It wasn't assassination, it was suicide.
Or more plausibly, stillborn.

Ah yes, the sex. I not so subtly alluded to that with the "happy ending" snark in comment #2 above.
