Waxman Issues Third Subpoena for EPA Documents

As we've often observed before, EPA chief Stephen Johnson has a remarkable capacity for withholding information. And now he's make a strong bid to making the EPA the most subpoenaed Bush administration agency.

Today, House oversight committee Chair Henry Waxman (D-CA) issued his third subpoena to the EPA this year. Waxman's committee has been investigating Johnson's decision, made against the unanimous recommendation of his legal and technical staff, to block California's attempt to institute tough greenhouse gas limits for cars and trucks.

Waxman says that his staff "has found evidence that EPA officials met with the White House" about the rule, but that "EPA has refused to disclose the substance and extent of its communications with the White House." Waxman's subpoena seeks about 100 EPA documents involving the White House.

Johnson has thus far stonewalled Congressional attempts to get more information about those White House meetings, telling Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) that he couldn't disclose anything about them because "I value the ability to have candid discussions that are part of good government."

Why does Waxman have to issue 3 subpoenas? Why can't the (accused) law-breaking mfer be arresting after not responding to the first subpoena? What about the subpoenas for Harriet Miers, Antonio Gonzales and other executive department (suspected) criminalsl? Just asking. The US Senate seems to be nothing but a toothless old dog!

In fact, what if any Sente subpoenas have been responded to in the last year if any? My guess would be zero.

Just IMPEACH the sob.

It doesn't take much to impeach a Federal official. It's a LOT less cumbersome than impeaching the President.

If Little Georgie doesn't think "his" people have to be accountable to Congress, then "his" people can be out of a job.

Henry, Sheldon, you guys are my idols. You are the ones who can and must complete successful investigations that can lead to a prosecution, if you see it's warranted. And I trust you on that.

There's nothing you two have done that's disappointed me—so far. At this point, I wish you guys could be cloned to fill the House and Senate once the dead weight and obstructors were ousted.

I want to trust that you are doing everything possible and everything right, because you have so far. Do I simply need to wait a bit longer? How long? Soon? Please? We really need this to be able to go on.

Pelosi and Reid have rendered Conyers and Waxman nothing more than powerless paper wavers.

Now lookey here Mister Johnson, if you don't obey this subpoena I'll be forced to issue another one.

I love Waxman, but so far, issuing subpoenas to a member of the Bush gang is a meaningless gesture.
