Wilkes: Broke and Busted
After a steady string of legal defeats, including conviction on all counts for bribing Duke Cunningham, Wilkes finally caught a break last month when an appeals court ruled that he could be released on bail pending his appeal of the case. Wilkes had been sent immediately to prison after his conviction because the judge simply thought Wilkes was such a crook and liar that he'd be sure to skip bail.
But it seems that Wilkes, once flush with multi-million dollar defense contracts, won't be able to seize his second chance:
A federal judge said Friday that [Wilkes] hasn't raised enough money to get out of jail while he appeals his case.Wilkes sighed as U.S. District Judge Larry Alan Burns said roughly $400,000 in retirement accounts pledged by family members couldn't be used as part of his bail....
Burns said he wants to be sure the government can collect on Wilkes' bail if necessary. He said he doesn't trust that a "stubborn" Wilkes will be able to stick to bail conditions "if it's not consistent with his agenda."
It appears that Wilkes is yet another victim of the burst housing bubble: real estate pledged by himself and his family as collateral for bail was sufficient to get him free in February of 2007 when he was indicted, but dropping property values have left him well short of the needed $1.4 million.

Heh Heh!

Wilkes is between a rock and a hard spot. He needs some assets to get out on bail. But if were to draw on any assets hidden in a foreign account or in some tricky deal with the folks who bought his ADCS building, well, the judge would throw his ass back in the slammer for lying. And he wouldn't be able to claim poverty and get his free public defender. It's a tough choice.

Don't buy this for a second. Wilkes and his wife did the mad asset scramble after being indicted to keep the bulk of his ill-gotten gains keeps hidden while he does his time in Club Fed. I think this included the obligatory "divorce". Duke Cunningham and his wife played the same game too (successfully I might add).

it was almost a cruel joke to release him on bail and then he can't post it - NOT !
and I agree, he's got a nice swiss bank account hidden away somewhere or some offshore account filled with taxpayer earmark money.

Even for the t.v. watching American public to imagine, this man, and his extended family are so mentally, and sexually twisted. We live next door to his extended family, and have been stalked for nearly 30 years. The extent of the damage they have caused us with the local government, and social damage they have caused are beyond recovery. Talk about a 'rackett'!!! And, using their Church to hide their hideous behavior. It takes a conscience to be socially disgraced, and I don't think they have one.
