American Spies on Trial in Italy
The trial is underway in Italy of 26 Americans, mostly CIA operatives, accused of abducting a radical Egyptian cleric in Italy and whisking him off to Egypt for torture.
They're on trial in absentia, but there's an Los Angles Times reporter there, telling a great story of "spies spying on spies"
Italy's top counterterrorism official, Bruno Megale, took the stand in Milan yesterday to tell how tapping phones helped to blow the lid off the Bush Administration's practice of "extraordinary rendition."
Megale obtained records of all cellphone traffic from the transmission tower nearest the spot where Abu Omar was abducted, for a 2 1/2 -hour period around the time he disappeared. There were 2,000 calls. Then, using a computer program, Megale was able to narrow down the pool by tracing the phones that had called each other, in other words, an indication of a group of people working together. Seventeen phone numbers, which showed intensifying use around the time of the abduction, were pinpointed. By following all other calls made from those phones, the investigators ultimately identified 60 numbers, including that of a CIA officer working undercover at the U.S. Embassy in Rome.
In his testimony, Megale revealed that one telephone number he recognized was that of Robert Seldon Lady, then-CIA station chief in Milan. Lady and Megale had worked together in counter-terrorism investigations. It was a number, Megale said somberly, that he and his team knew.

Given its long and storied record of incompetence, not to mention its criminal activity, why do we permit the CIA's continued existence?

clods. I hope these 26 can never leave the US again for fear of arrest. perhaps the Italians will come here and snatch them off of US streets for being the international terrorists they are. do we need a Gitmo for US war criminals?

There would be a satisfying justice if that were to happen. And I don't believe that the Administration would be in a position to bitch.

26 Russian spies entered the United States, captured people off the street, and secretly flew them to countries to be tortured. Typically, the spies were not real bright, and our local CIA agents got wind of it and the Russians had to flee. Now Russia refuses to release them for trial, filthy commies!
Wait, it was the *CIA* that captured people? Flew them to be tortured? Had to flee when found out? Won't show up for trial?
Filthy Commies!!!

OK so not only did they kidnap this guy in a foreign country and send him off to be tortured in Egypt, but now he's under house arrest there- nothing else. Turns out by doing this the CIA totally f**ked over the Italian anti-terrorism investigators who were watching Abu Omar and his pals - they say if the CIA hadn't done that they would have the guy in prison along with his accomplices.
This link from the front page really shows how what kind of dipshits we have protecting us http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/04/AR2005120400885.html

OK, this was wrong. But cell phones? Ordinary cell phones?
My sister is a cop. She says criminals are the stupidest people in the world. Now we know who's in the CIA.

you didn't know that ???
at this level, the CIA doesn't use the type of people you see in a james bond flik
they're more petty criminals and other people who are easily compromised and blackmailed (ie, the incompetent part of the criminal underworld)
I wouldn't be surprised to see some mafia names come out (real Italian mafia, not the American version)

I think I've been watching too many reruns of the wire lately because this sounds all to familiar. Perhaps the CIA should invest in a subscription to HBO, maybe get some ideas...

No kidding - even the mopes in Baltimore knew enough to buy pre-paid phones and only use them for a short time. They all spent enough money at fancy resorts while they were in Italy - couldn't they drop a few bucks on a throw-away phone?

Recall...that Wayne Madsen Report just ran a story on the murder of an Italian counterinteligence agent who was gunned down in Iraq while in the American zone.
THAT was a big mistake for those on trial.
Now Italy, has no other choice but to zealously prosecute the CIA rendition boys, who also were using wiretaps to find their prey.

I love how this is being persecuted by trial in absentia. How fitting.

Face it. We don't have the moral position, legal position, integrity or guts to have them present for their trial. It might set an international precedent. We're Duhbya's America . . . Lucky Us!

Satisfying justice? How about seeing Dictator Bush impeached, sent to Iraq and made to answer for his Crimes against Humanity! Now THAT would be justice!
