Boehner Demands Apology From Waxman for "Abusive Outburst"
House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) has reacted angrily to Chairman Howard Waxman's gaveling down of Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) yesterday during a hearing with EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson.
Here's the statement from Boehner:
"Chairman Waxman's behavior in the Oversight & Government Reform Committee yesterday was appalling and beneath the dignity of the House. His abuse of power is further proof that House Democrats have broken their promise to run the most open and honest Congress in history. Moreover, his outrageous threats and intimidation against a fellow Committee colleague were not only unbecoming for a Member of Congress, but frankly, unbecoming for anyone who hopes to be treated as a professional. Chairman Waxman owes an apology to Mr. Issa, his Committee colleagues, and anyone who witnessed his shameful behavior. But more importantly, he owes the American people an apology because these types of heavy-handed threats have no place in the people's House."

Boehner is an idiot. IF he had been in the hearing yesterday he would have done the same OR worse to Issa. Issa was acting like an ass.
Boner should cry about it and then go home...what a loser.

This is a joke, right?
Where was the similar statement from Boehner when Issa said this?
Boehner and I can't be from the same state. Can't be.

Waaaaah. After reading Boehner's outrage, you'd think that Waxman drop kicked Issa down the stairs. Turns out Waxman was unbelievably restrained.

Let's let numerous geographical areas be represented in registering support of a chairman who's trying to achieve the purpose of the committee -- to arrive at the truth.

Why should we contact them? If they want to sing the blues until B.B. King starts his solo, let 'em. They're just further embarassing their party.
I don't think this rises to the level of a response, but if we were to contact anyone, we should be contacting Rep. Waxman and praising him for his exemplary leadership and continued excellence. *GAVEL, GAVEL, GAVEL, GAVEL* "Shut UP!" is about all they deserve, so I think he practiced a great deal of restraint...

Boehner needs to remember that his party isn't running Congress, and that it behaved far worse when it was running Congress: he's lucky he isn't having to meet in a basement or at midnight.
He also needs to remember that Issa is a fool who insists on proving it at frequent intervals.
(Boehner himself is not exactly a shining example of good behavior.)

Mr. Boehner needs to apologize to the Republican Party for his disatrous failures of leadership. He is leading them, with the assistance of progressive Democrats, down the path of rejection, irrelevance and impotence. American voters are resoundingly throwing out Republicans in districts that have been overwhelmingly Republican for decades. I think the Republican Party should write a letter to Mr. Boehner inquiring into why his leadership isn't any more effective than his rhetoric.

I knew this nonsense from Boner (sic) was coming.
Waxman's frustration with the pathetic EPA maladministrator has been building for some time and I expected that it would come to a head, and it did. My theory is that the Republicans expected it to happen. In fact, I'd grant that they planned it this way. I bet they were pushing for a complete Waxman meltdown and Issa was part of the performance.
I watched the entire hearing. Issa was talking over the Chairman and disrupting. That's the single issue. Issa was rude, disruptive, and disrespectful. He has no right to protest.
The fact that Issa shut his face after Waxman issued his demand says it all: guilty. Issa was "imtimidated"? Good.
Of course, in the setting of a congressional hearing, the rules are quite different. If it were a matter of a private citizen doing the same thing as Issa, it would be called "disorderly conduct" and subject one to arrest.
Chairman Waxman was generous. Had it been me I would have thrown him the hell out after a single, firm warning.
May 21, 2008 12:08 PM | Reply | Permalink
I watched the whole hearing also. If I had been the chairman I would have pressed Johnson for an answer to the question as to whether he had discussions with the President about the issues.
When asked if he was asserting Executive Privilege, Johnson's reply was, "Not yet". I would have continued to press the question until he admitted he spoke to Bush or claimed privilege and if he wouldn't do either I would fine him in contempt and have him detained.

I can see it now...
Judge Waxman"... on NBC this fall...
Meanwhile, the democracy continues to fall downhill due to the interesting special effects while nothing is actually done to those who are important more than a gavel response for the camera.
Remember folks... even before the facts were so explicit... impeachment was off the table... and so far,I have seen little as far as introducing laws to prevent this from these actions from happening in the future. I guess promises are nothing more than a means to keep or become powerful, not a personality trait to be admired...
Throw them ALL out or support our continual demise because even the few good Republicans and the few good Democrats will never be able to overcome the mob rule of both parties. those who try will get the committes NOBODY watches or cares about... IMHO

Are you kidding me? The "throw them all out" line is completely stale and irresponsible. Throw out even the progressives in Congress? In order to... do what, exactly?
It's about as annoying as hearing someone say, "Oh, they all do it" when excusing Republican corruption. Personally, the impractical Holier Than Thou camp is about as annoying as the amoral Anything Goes camp.
Just for the record, do you think Waxman was out of line, and Issa was acting properly in this exchange?
May 21, 2008 12:59 PM | Reply | Permalink
Yes, Waxman was out of line for not pursuing Issa to the point of issuing a contempt citation and in for his allowing Issa to distract him from his interrogation of the EPA Mis-Administrator.

Boner's got to be effing kidding. Issa's a tool, he's one of the big players in running Gray Davis out of the California statehouse, and as my niece would say, "He's stupid, mouldy, and assive."
I wonder, is Boner going to cry if Waxman doesn't apologise? Screw Boner and his perpetual, fake tan.

I will stay angry until ALL the bushivik cronies & criminals are held responsible for their crimes and imprisoned.

The infuriating hypocricy and sheer nerve of Boehner whining about the Dem majority being meanies drives me crazy!
I listened to the whole thing, and Issa was trying to talk over Waxman while he was directing a question to Johnson...
He should have taken the gavel to Issa's skull! What an evil asswipe that man is!
Hooray for Waxman...a Dem not afraid to flaunt his power over the Repubs!!!!

Bohner, is a pig! Cry, cry, crying at every chance he can get! Flooding his office with calls does not work...his staff is just like him - done it before!
I only see what I saw, and this is a court - which the over site committee basically is, Issa would have been held in content, he just got a gavel hammering down - and a frustrated mans voice telling him to stop or you will be removed!
Waxman is very, very frustrated with ALL republicans! When they had the GAVEL, they did nothing but give this administration a "pass go" card, but they are now feeling the repercussion's of their nasty "appeasement" toward this adminstration by the voter! LOL

I was delighted to see (at last) a smackdown by Waxman for Issa (ALSO a crybaby - as he showed after Arnie took the crown he was certain he could claim...after all, he engineered the recall...)
The boner just added to the comic relief.
Still, this smug pieces of work like Johnson just LOVE getting away with all of their deadly shit. Waxman's disdain is about the biggest comeuppance they will face and they know it.

Was Boehner sauced, at the time? No, seriously.
Darrrell Issa is the the worst example of water boy for the right and special interests. In the wake of the disgraceful, Issa-led recall of California's governor (for the crime of California's being victimized by the people doing the recalling), there was one silver lining.
After the recall was successful... speaking of "tears"... it was a flaming hoot to see Darrell Issa CRYING, right after the R's had clearly come to him and told him, "Sorry, sucker. It ain't gonna be You."
The thing about a tool is, he never knows that he's a tool.

Funny how sensitive the former steamrolling GOP leadership has become now that Tom "I am the Federal Government" DeLay is gone.
Here's how to make Issa cry: Park a car with a hairtrigger alarm outside of Issa's house. He made his fortune selling car alarms.

I'd like to see Waxman tell both Boehner and Issa to go to hell, or maybe he should tell them to do what the VP told Leahy to do. It's time they learned for certain what it means to be in the minority!

What are the rules, anyway? Was there anything to Issa's objections? Or does the Waxman, as the Committee Chairman, have the authority to ask questions as he pleases?
Does anyone know where to find a copy of the rules governing the Oversight & Government Reform Committee?

They (the Reps) treated people like dirt, and now they get it back. In fact, it's too bad they don't get more back. They should remove all of them physically from the House to somewhere like Point Barrow, and I bet there will be a lot of progress on that day, or month for that matter.

There's something I don't get here. Waxman asks Johnson a question. Johnson doesn't answer the question, Waxman askes again, doesn't get an answer. Waxman asks: "Are you citing executive privilege". Johnson says no. So why is Johnson not in contempt of congress for not answering?

Intresting find...under the below rule, go to section 10, and what past posts has stated that Issa was convicted? of crimes? Does he fit under thing Rule? I wonder?
RULE XXIII
CODE OF OFFICIAL CONDUCT
10. A Member, Delegate, or Resident
Commissioner who has been
convicted by a court of record for the
commission of a crime for which a
sentence of two or more years’ imprisonment
may be imposed should
refrain from participation in the
business of each committee of which
he is a member, and a Member should
refrain from voting on any question
at a meeting of the House or of the
Committee of the Whole House on
the state of the Union, unless or until
judicial or executive proceedings result
in reinstatement of the presumption
of his innocence or until he is reelected
to the House after the date of
such conviction.
So, what do you think? Could Issa fall under this rule?
