GOP Rep. Arrested for Drunk Driving
Rep. Vito J. Fossella (R-N.Y.) was arrested overnight in Alexandria and charged with driving while intoxicated, court records showed today.Fossella is scheduled to appear in Alexandria General District Court on May 12 for an advisement hearing, the records said.

He is the last Republican left representing NYC -- the last couple of elections the seat hasn't been targeted, but local Democrats have, nonetheless, run very respectable campaigns against him. While Staten Island (2/3rds of the district) is the most Republican part of NYC, the district is still definitely purple rather than red.
Domenic Recchia is a city councilman from the Brooklyn part of the district already committed to the race, as is Stephen Harrison, a teacher who was the 2006 nominee. Maybe this arrest will give one of them a leg up - or even attract a strong Staten Island-based Democrat into the race.
Would be great to get rid of Fossella in November -- this can't hurt that effort.

Ha. I actually worked on the campaign of his 2004 Democratic challenger. NY-13 covers Staten Island and part of Brooklyn; Vito's the only Republican left in NYC, even though the district has a big democratic registration edge and tons of union members. Unfortunately, these tend to be socially conservative, Reagan Democrat-types, which is why he's still in office. Also helps that all the major local Dems chickened out of running against him last year.
This guy actually ran push polls in the district implying that our candidate supported NAMBLA back in '04. Yes, seriously. So, at this moment, my schadenfreude overflows. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

The NYT has a story today about what kinds of cars are leased by NY area members of Congress but Fossella isn't mentioned.

This follows on the news that former NRCC treasurer, Chris Ward, stole money from Fosella's PAC. I hope this is another portend of things to come for Vito.
