Pentagon Military Analyst Doc Diving Thread

As Josh says, we'd like any help we can get finding the revealing tidbits from the Pentagon's military analyst documents. The documents are here. Please provide a link to the pdf you are referring to, as well as the page number when you comment below.

And for those of you who haven't heard the audio of the analyst briefing on April 18, 2006, don't miss it.

hi. jed babbin, one of our military analysts, is hosting the michael medved nationally syndicated radio show this afternoon. he would like to see if general casey would be available for a phone interview any time between 3 and 6 pm.
...
please feel free to contact jed directly (contact info below) if the general can/would be available for the interview. this would be a softball interview and the show is 8th or 9th in the nation.

From: Allison Barber To: redacted

Hi. Thanks for sending this. Just fyi, probably wouldn't put "softball" interview in writing. If that got out it would compromise jed and general casey.

"Staff:
For the first 4 mths, I would like to send over a Pentagon Channel producer and broadcaster. These folks will help create the
assignment desk and will help facilitate the flow of products.
We are ready to engage and create the new show. Understand that in a month, we will want to review the concept with you and
your team and adjust as needed.
Folks back home complain that they never see the other side of the story... let's create the show and get out the word.
As a side note, the Discovery Channel/Military Channel just met with us last week. They want to start broadcasting Pentagon
Channel programming. This news show would be perfect for their network"

Themes for interviews include the following but may not be in your lane:

--status of I.O. operations in iraq (and interview with RADM van Buskirk, if his review is completed)
--economic reconstruction
--iran and Syria: helping or hurting iraq’s political and economic development?

I need to make a decision in the next few hours about if dod continues to offer to pay for military analysts travel. Since we have the legal approval and a precedent, in that we have done this before, I am inclined to keep on the same track ... Unless you say otherwise, I will just keep doing the program the same way and offer to pay for military analysts flights.

Scooter Libby

Attached Is a request from Melanie Morgan from KFSO Radio in San Francisco who is Chairman of MOVE AI"1ERICA FORWARD which Is very supportive of our war efforts In Iraq. She has made a request to Gen Abizaid to bring a number of Gold Star Family members to Iraq which sounds like a good Idea If we can do It. Overall – Jed Babbin is Di Rita’s stooge puppet. They basically dictate whatever they want when he subs for talk radio show hosts, and gets to guest on Scarbrough, etc. He runs his articles by Ruff and Di Rita to have them edited and revised, as if they are the editors. Most of the correspondence deals with getting the guests, etc. onto shows when a sub fills in for Hannity, et. al.

pg.4275-6

Bryan Whitman: We should not be doing China – before we put Feith out on China we should be conferring with DOS. This is what ruffles feathers.

Ruff:
your right about sensitivities, and I think as long as Feith stays where the sd has been, which is general observations, no specifics, we’re okay. and we can certainly let dos know Feith may be talking about this. we can also advise that he contact his counterpart at dos.

from:redacted.

I have been told very specifically that Jed is not to ask and Mr. Feith is to steer away from all China issues. Given that, I assume we will be prepping Mr. Feith on QDR Issues—

Eric Ruff responds:
here is where we run into problems.

Larry Di Rita,
Not sure what you mean.

(P.S. Babbin also confirms no Qs from radio listeners, at Feith’s insistence.)

Great peak at how "access" is gained... Eric Ruff is excited about an op-ed by Claudia Rosett, bryan, hollen, lei's remember this writer the next time we have a trip for the sd or the dsd in europe. she might be someone we want to meet after we review a few more of her ~lul1"lns. thanks.

At which point Eric Ruff is sent links by "redacted" to recent ass-kissing articles by Claudia Rosett. At which point, Eric suggests a one-on-one with DOD leadership.

Around pg. 4352, we get Dan Senor sending in an upcoming article for review, and the Man pretty much revises it for him, offering new language, and suggestion it for Monday's "bird", whatever that is.

BACKGROUND:
One of the most interesting things coming from this trip to Iraq with the media analysts was learning how their jobs have been undergoing a metamorphosis. There are several reasons behind the morph ... with an all voluntary military, no one in the media has current military background. Additionally, we have been doing a good job of keeping these guys informed so that they have the ready answers when the network comeS calling. CURRENT ISSUES:
The key issue here is that more and more, media analysts are having a greateJ: impact on the television media network coverage of military issues. They have now become the goto
guys not only on breaking storys. but they influence the views on issues. They also have a huge amount of influence on what stories the network decides to cover proactively with regards to ~ilitaJ:Y.
In media ops. I have been using them more frequently to get our side of the story out with media sensitive departments such as USDI, which is typically hard to penetrate with traditionally media, but that we have found to be receptive to talking to the analysts such as Ken Robinson.

Larry.
Doing some 'TV later on Fallujah. Here are the points I will hit: -Raid on Baghdad mosque & Mosul hospital demonstrate value of having Iraqi security forces on front line of certain operations. Better to have Iraqis engaging, Iraqis at politically or religiously sites. rather than Americans engaging Iraqis. , -Discovery of terror facilities in Fallujah (slaughterhouse, terror training classroom. SOY. etcl underscore the importance of going ,into Fallujah, even if many of the terrorists were able to scatter. We've removed their base of op'~. They need these facilities to be effective. Once they're on the run and w!o access to a s&£e haven from which to build and use such facilities, harder for them to operate.
Anything else? Any other nuggets that would bolster the case for Why our strategy is working?

Oh. Wow. Turns out, I "broke off" the audio of the December 12, 2006 Farewell luncheon and clipped many highlights (TPM, just wrote to on the tips e-mail):

Intro:

"On April 20, 2008, the New York Times published an expose, "Behind TV Analysts, Pentagon’s Hidden Hand," by David Barstow, detailing the close--in many cases, close business--relationship with a group of retired military officers who have spent much of the last five years as supposedly "independent" military analysts in the mainstream media, mostly on television and especially on the newschannels, Fox, CNN, and including MSNBC (proprietors of Newsvine)"

Money graf:

"On Thursday, May 8, the Department of Defense released to the public all the items they had turned over to the New York Times relating to the Military Analysts story. One item that was released that has generated no notice in the media accounts so far is an audio recording of a valedictory luncheon Rumsfeld hosted for those analysts on December 12, 2006--a month after Rumsfeld had been cashiered by President Bush and only a few days before Rumsfeld's replacement Robert Gates assumed the post of Secretary of Defense.

"The recording is just over an hour long, so I clipped a few of the more notable moments. By 'notable' I mean 'at times chilling, infuriating, even shocking.'"

P. 4345 is Senor apologizing that a piece of his revealed something "not helpful." He does tell them to put it in "the bird" (apparently some roundup of news coverage) if they think it's "helpful."

Not the biggest revelation, but when I think of my relationships with the people I write about, it turns my stomach.

The "bird" is the "Early Bird," (or "Current News Briefs") the Pentagon's internal 5AM news service -- which traditionally hasn't been a feel-good brief for the DoD crowd. Looks like that might have changed.

'Thomas McInerney' -DepSec RAND remarks on terrorism

Reference # 1. We need to atop saying this is going to be a long war ... , ... We need a Blueprint for Victory for a shorter term effort; We do not need to drag this War on Terror out. It is not fair to the American people and the world. Let's get aggressive snd deal with the nation states that continue to support international terrois. See the book, "Endgame" for answers. Flawed principle!!! War wall be conducted swiftly, decisevely and with finality. That is what the Army and DOD need to articulate. I have mentioned this to Sec Wolfowitz before.; Sends a message of weakness from the only superpower in the world.
# 2 ///Also, forget the "softer ones" regarding the War on Terror". Again, soft reflects weakness. Who is writing this nOnsense for the Sec Wolfowitz. Let's get tough and stay tough until we win. Soft sounds like Kerry on a more sensitive war, .
This talk must be revised to send the right message and a much stronger one.
My thoughts for what they are worth .

They seem to get a lot of advanced copies of WSJ editorials.

Also... some odd correspondence with wingnuts who print their own newsletters.

The whole "system" has been compromised.

Here's some fun stuff from:

http://www.dod.mil/pubs/foi/milanalysts/23%20Apr%2008/Barstow%20Release%2023%20Apr%2008/5389%20-%205513.pdf

First off, someone in the OSD PA wants to know if he can leak some classified information to Jed Babbin (Page 21):

hi. i just got a call from jed babbin. he is going to be on kUdlow tonight and want to be prepared if they ask him about the aq threat to saudi oil fields. have you heard anything on this? anything we could share with him... even background info?? thanks

Secondly, apparently the "retired military analysts" were so important that they'd only talk to Rumsfeld himself (Page 22):

that's a bit of a frustrating answer on the rt. the retired military analysts will not come in the building if they're not meeting with secdef. It's fine for our other groups to focus on other mil/dod leaders, they will be happy as clams. the mil analysts are a different story. they've always only come 11'1 to meet with him. i don't see us having success getting interest if they don't have access to the boss. thanks

Third, well, the preceding email is blacked out so it's not clear what the context is but I found it amusing (Page 23):

• American Spectator -Hold •Instapundit -Dr. B will find an hour in late November or early December •Stern Magazine -If PA deems attractive and there is a need to do foreign press While at the NATO summit, we tTlay decide to participate. Additionally. PA needs to develop a PA Plan for Riga. •Military Analysts RT -Will not work for next week. Surrogate team should also reach out to CJCS, VCJCS. ADM Mullen. etc. SD should 110t be your only focus. We should try these outreach events with other high-level leaders as well.

Finally, I love the quotes on Pg. 67:

Good Morning All, We have received the Attendees for the SecDef's "Journalist" Lunch on Mon. 23 Oct @ 12:oopm-l:00. Mark Stein Cal Thomas Ted Babbin Kate O'Beirne Austill Bay

"Journalists", indeed. Ok, have fun, y'all.

Oh, and here's something interesting:

To: Retired Military Analysts From:Public Affairs Office of the Secretary of Defense Date:October 6, 2006 Re:Conference Call With Senior DoD Officials We invite you to participate in a conference call, TUESDAY, October 10, 2006,from 2:30-3:00 p.m. General George Casey will brief you on current operations in Iraq. His biography is attached for your review. This call will be On Background. (Capitalization, not emphasis, in original.)

I didn't realize that On Background was a term d'arte. Well, now I know!

Craddock's name appears to have been redacted, but is available through other sources.

Page 242 of http://www.dod.mil/pubs/foi/milanalysts/13%20Feb%2008/Barstow%20E-mail%20Release%203154-3777.pdf.

A mystery person (name blocked out throuhgout) is planning a military analyst trip sponsored by DOD to Iraq on July 8-10. One of the invitees (also blacked out) also declines. At some point, the e-mail passed through or originated with the Patton Boggs law firm.

To me, this would mean that a Patton Boggs attorney was turning the trip down (probably John C. Garrett, "unpaid" analyst for FOX News") or WORSE, Patton Boggs was planning the trip using military assets.

The e-mail communication is from trip planner person x to Public Affairs person Allison Barber -- and the last footer is from Patton Boggs.

This is from the April 14th, Barstow release. The web adddres is

(This quote uses the phrase "information war." You are are great. Look forward to more of this as we get out in front of the information war. NY Times 4540

There is a list of invitees to the Updates in Iraq for the date Feb. 7, 2007. The invite and the lists are on NY TIMES 4571-4573.

Our happy warriors are offered the opportunity to meet with David Petraeus on January 6, 2007, NY TIMES 4668.

On 4671-4675, 4678-4687, there are intensive discussions of network news coverage with a strong underlying concern about the coverage of Iran.

Jed Babbin (NY TIMES 4689) writes on his appointment to editor of Human Events:
GUYS: Please pardon this impersonal approach, but I'wanted you all to hear -before the rumor mill or press reports -that as of Monday, I'll be editor of Human Events, the oldest conservative journal in America. I'll be working on both the print and web editions, and concentrating on the internet side. We'll still be working together often on a variety of projects, though my brief now encompasses all of politics, not just the war and foreign policy. I think success may be measured by the number of sleepless nights we cause the liberals. Let's talk soon. (and subscribe to Human Events, folks. Always gotta sell subscriptions and ads.). I hope you all will consider submitting articles Erom time to time, Best, Jed.

WARNING!!! WARNING!!! WARNING!!!

All beware the poster of this comment, testing, is a known spammer on TPM that throws unsubstantiated allegations on the news blogs that link to his unsubstantiated rants on this blog.

If you chose to leave a comment on his blog that does not agree with his conspiracy driven dribble, the blogger will in turn attack you. He has a history of flaming people throughout the TPM site.

He rants that anyone that disagrees with him is somehow connected to the DOJ, attempting to spread misinformation since the poster does not agree with him, attempts to connect the poster to another poster in a means of discrediting him/her, or attempts to claim the commenter is violating TPM policy for posting a divergent point of view.

While there may be some truth in the posting, it is only surely a result of pure accident on his part if there is so. Testing simply posts things he does not know about and then says because no one has stopped to explain the topic to him and the ins and outs, there must be a conspiracy.

Proceed at your own risk.

If you find yourself getting lost in all the notes, emails, and details, take a step back, and consider this. There are links to the DOD Information Warfare Guide. Shows how some of the information at the FOIA-release fits in with the information warfare planning.

The US used the DOJ OLC memo to classify the United States as a combat zone for warrantless information warfare: Abusing NSLs, engaging in FISA violations, and conducting CIFA surveillance. Illegal information was gleaned from POWs and from American civilians, then cycled through the NSA into the media messaging contractors. The information warfare doesn't narrowly relate only to Iraq, but includes POW issues, Nuremberg, and war crimes in Afghanistan and Guantanamo.

Christ, enough already. You're calling this guy a spammer while replying to everything he says with GINORMOUS IDENTICAL POSTS!!! GINORMOUS IDENTICAL POSTS!!! GINORMOUS IDENTICAL POSTS!!!

And he's linking to TPM threads. I rather liked the one with Scott McClellan and Dan Bartlett...

In sum, please stop spamming us with posts about how you think this guy's a spammer. You have conveyed no useful information whatsoever. Who are you, anyway?

Speaking of testing, he (she?) did post a set of emails related to this military analyst subject. I did particularly like the line "Do we have an official line from the analysts on this?"

I think it was an email from Allison Barber (sic?) to Eric Ruff, and I think that's where I saw it. Sorry for the sketchy memory.

Refer to PDF# 5462 Page 74/125 dated 10/12/2006

Subject: Response to Rajiv's response to Dan

"Rajiv responded today to Dan's op-ed by writing a post on super-liberal blog, Talking Points Memo Cafe, edited by Bush-bashing uber-liberal JOSH MARSHALL (my caps). It seems that Rajiv is now a "guest blogger" on Marshall's Blog, which makes Rajiv's liberal bias no longer a question but a certifiable fact. It'd be like a Washington Post assistant manager editor quest hosting for Rush Limbaugh."

Larry,

Need your help: A number of people trashing Kerik on background (shocker!!!).
NYT is doing a big piece on his service in lraq. Would you mind talking to them on background to say positive things? I could give you the points that I've been hitting with them...would be good if they were echoed. You'll have credibility with them, b/c your time in Baghdad overlapped with Bernie's.

Bernard Kerik was nominated by President Bush to be Secretary of Homeland Security on December 3, 2004. This email is from December 8. Kerik withdrew acceptance of the nomination on December 10. In their own words: "(shocker!!!)"

Does anyone know who "Wayne" is? Here is a 10-27-2006 email from "Wayne" to Dallas Lawrence (among others) regarding interrogation methods:

"Those on the Left, the Democrats, Green Party, Socialists and of course Progressive Communist Party are gasping in disbelief at the Vice Presidnets comments claiming that the use of an interrogation technique called water boarding is a 'no brainer.' However . . . . .

A Cheney spokeswoman said Thursday that the vice president was not confirming the use of any specific interrogation techniques. 'He was talking about the interrogation program without torture,' spokeswoman Lee Anne McBride said, 'The vice president does not discuss any techniques or methods that may or may not have been used in questioning.'

I am constantly amazed at the zeal with which the "Lefties" run to the aid of the terrorist's. The Left constantly complains about being called un patriotic when they attack the Bush Administration policies on the war and interrogation. Yet, now, the VP expresses an opinion on an interrogation method, not considered torture by many of us who know the technique, and he is once again lam basted as the torture VP. How many times must it be said that the US does not torture, nor do we find it necessay to torture. Contrary to what the Left would have you believe, the interrogation techniques used by the CIA are successful in extracting 'Time Sensitive INTEL' as is evidenced by the Intel extracted from KSM et. al., during their visit with CIA interrogators and before their transfer to Club Gitmo. I have advocated the use narcotics (Narcosis) during interrogations and fortunately for the American people, that option is contained in the Military Commissions Act of 2006. Propofol, a short-acting intravenous anesthetic agent used for the induction of general anesthesia in adult patients and pediatric patients older than 3 years of age; is a drug that can extract Intel from a terrorist interrogatee at greater than a 90% success rate. Propofol works by awakening the brain in stages leaving the Pre Frontal Cortex until last. The PFC is where the mechanism that allows humans to lie or exaggerate is housed. It is used thousands of times a day saely in the US in general surgery and yet, there are those that object to using it, or any drug, to extract Intel that will, and has, saved American lives.I can only hope that our CIA interrogators are using Propofol to help protect the American people. I can safely say that, fortunately at this time in US history, we have a President who understands the stakes and has battled the Left to give our military and intelligence professionals the tools they need to continue to protect us.

Take care.
Wayne"

I'm not sure which is more disturbing, the contents of this email or that it appears to be sent from an AOL account. This may be old news but I thought I would flag it anyway.

Be careful out there, try not to get lam basted.

Plans, Liasison and Coordination

Page 82, there appears to be a name linked with CIFA and MZM. Anyone find any other Navy Commanders with that unique office symbol?

My guess would be Wayne Simmons, former CIA Operative.

Yeah, check the E-mail on page 81, again from a Wayne using an AOL account and the subject is "Simmons". It's a lovely account of his attendance at the signing of the MCA in 2006. Creepy stuff.

Here's something I find puzzling.... Why did they redact Gen. Casey's name in this document? You can see a piece of the "y" at the end of his name in places where it has been blocked out and it's hard to envision who else it could be from the context.

There's lots of documentation of an earlier military analyst call with General Casey at pages 56, 74 and 121 of this document.

Maybe I'm way off in the weeds and I haven't read many of the documents but it struck me as odd.

They did the same with Craddock, but worse: They left the same comments with his name and the redacted-name. They may have had different people reviewing; or they made errors; or they didn't have a single person to ensure consistency. REgardless, it looks like they redacted information that should not have been.

I guess I'm trying to fathom why they would not want people (specifically the NY Times) to know that Casey was yacking with these folks 0n 08/04/05.

Here are some emails linked to "Karl". Is this Rove and the NSC?

Greenwald points to the possible Karl Rove in an email here, refuting claims the White House wasn't involved or aware.
