Senate One Step Closer to Reversing EPA on California Waiver

From the AP:

A Senate panel voted narrowly Wednesday to overturn EPA's decision blocking California and more than a dozen other states from limiting greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles.

The bill by California Democrat Barbara Boxer passed the Environment and Public Works committee 10 to 9, sending it to the full Senate.

One committee Democrat, Sen. Tom Carper of Delaware, broke with others on his side of the aisle and voted "no." A Republican, John Warner of Virginia, voted "yes," allowing the bill to pass.

In December, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Stephen Johnson turned down California's request for a Clean Air Act waiver that would have allowed the state to require automakers to cut global warming emissions by 30% in new cars and light trucks by 2016.

Boxer's bill would deem the waiver approved.

WOW! Could you have picked a more unflattering close-up of Barbara Boxer?

Hallelujah.

If the committee vote was that close, I doubt it would get past a filibuster.

It will be a good way to have McCain prove he was full of beans on his OR speech.

It's a good start.

Get the GOP on the record. That's the key. If it doesn't get passed, it's just one more policy that will need to be overturned next year - one of a long list.

Tom Carper of Delaware--friend of Lieberman?

What the hell was Carper's problem?

I agree - this is also about getting the GOP (and dissenting Dems) on the record regarding emissions standards. Well done.

Now that lobby reform has come about, it is most likely impossible that Carper receives funds from lobbyists fighting the emissions bill, isn't it...
Yeah, right...

Unfortunately, our children and grandchildren will contend with the blowback caused by the ignorance that will ultimately overturn Barbara's intelligent stand.

That's a great victory for progressives, and the newly controlled congress. Being a Californian, I am hungry for the low emmission OPTIONS this waiver may force.

Kudos to Warner, Kudos to Dems, boo on Carper. Delawarians, take note!

What are the odds of this actually getting to be voted upon while Inhoff lives and the 'no talking needed' fillibuster remains a rule of the Senate?

John Warner, I love you.

This is incredible. Stunning, if it goes through. In fact, it might be one of the most exciting things that's happened outside the long, long, long primaries.

That's because if it goes anywhere, that'll be a sign that Congress has somehow had someone surgically implant a spine. Finally? I hardly dare hope.
