Military Had Prior Problems With AEY

The story of arms dealer AEY Inc., run by the 22-year-old Miami man who was indicted last week, is getting worse by the minute.

Four government officials are testifying on Capitol Hill today about how the company ended up with a $300 million U.S. military contract providing unusable and probably illegal weapons to the Afghan Army.

So far, the officials haven't discussed the alleged State Department cover-up yet. But they are delving into AEY's previous contracts with the government and it doesn't look good.

In his opening statement, Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) revealed a series of previous problems that the military had with AEY.

Documents produced to the Committee show that federal agencies terminated, withdrew, or canceled at least seven previous contracts with AEY. Under these contracts, AEY provided potentially unsafe helmets to our forces in Iraq, failed to deliver thousands of weapons, and shipped poor quality ammunition to U.S. Special Forces. Government contracting officials repeatedly warned of "poor quality," "damaged goods, " "junk" weapons, and other equipment in "the reject category. " And they complained the company repeatedly engaged in "bait and switch" tactics that were "hurting the mission."

One contracting official told us: " I just don't trust the guy. . . . I couldn't take anything he said credibly. " He told us that AEY was the single worst company he dealt with in Iraq, saying: "That was my lemon I had to make lemonade out of."

Nevertheless, AEY's formal record remained spotless, Defense Department officials said, party because the previous problems did not involve contracts large enough to trigger current reporting requirements.

"The system for vetting for contractors appear to be broken," Waxman said. "It's hard to imagine a less qualified contractor than AEY and yet this company was rated excellent by the Defense Department and it was awarded a contact worth $300 million. That is quite amazing to me."

Dood!

ITMFA.

In fairness to the Pentagon ("We're Building A Better World. So That We Can Blow It Up."), Efraim Diveroli came very highly rated by Young Death Merchants Monthly, whose article in the April 2006 issue (Cover Story: "How Zac Efron Fell In Love With The New MIM-72 CHAPARRAL Surface-to-Air Missile System!") called Diveroli "Arguably the best weapons dealer in the business today that's too young to rent a car!" Forced into major defense-spending cuts by the Bush Administration's massive roll-back of military spending in order to pay for schools, entitlement programs, Katrina rebuilding and billions of condoms for AIDS-ravaged Africa, Pentagon officials said today that they were simply doing the best with what little money they have.

"Times are tough, we're spending our entire budget on gas for the 1,600 Hummers that surround Dick Cheney's secret lair," a Defense Department spokesman told us. "If we have to buy guns and explosives from some kid whose nuts haven't dropped yet, that's what we're going to do. On the plus side, we paid him in Bud Light and lapdances, so you'd be surprised how far we stretched that $300 million."

I am perplexed that Waxman can still be amazed by the mobsters running our country.

For common folk, racketeering is a serious felony. The mobsters threaten innocent folk with harm unless they pay up.

Unless, of course, the mobsters are working for our Washington racketeers. In this case, the IRS will INSURE innocent folks will pay the mobsters. The alternative is prison sentences.

Sad endings to a wonderful democracy concept...

Is there an obvious reason for why these guys got this big contract? It seems like there should be some clear cronyism connection - like one of these dudes is the son of a hunting buddy of Cheney or something - but I haven't seen such a connection.

Is the story about Tom Ridge lobbying for Albania connected? 2 stories about Albania on the same day.

I second that notion!

The lesson to be learned here is: Don't send a young man to do an old man's job.
If these crooks hadn't trusted their criminal enterprise to a 22-year old, but rather found a more seasoned, experienced privateer (like any number of former Bu$hco appointees) they'd never have been caught.

You go with the crooks you have, not the crooks you want!

I spent about 10 years as a Senior Purchasing Agent with Defense and NASA prime and subcontracts. We had to audit and document up the butt to qualify/requalify our subcontractors. That the Army Contracting Officers and brass didn’t know what they were dealing with is bullshit!!!!!!!!

Good one, Bushie
