DOJ to Oversight: DENIED

Two weeks ago, Chairman Henry Waxman (D-CA) of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee issued subpoenas for FBI paperwork regarding interviews with President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney on the outing of CIA operative Valerie Plame.

And now the Justice Department has responded: Think again, Henry.

In the latest subpoena denial from the administration, Attorney General Mukasey informed the Committee that it will not be issuing documents to comply with the congressionally issued subpoena.

But Waxman is giving them one last chance. In a letter to Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald on Friday, he informed Fitzgerald that the DOJ has until July 3rd to release the requested documents.

Oh, NO!!!! It's the dreaded sternly-worded letter! Run for your lives!!!!

You are giving the Republicans too much credit by calling Waxman one of theirs. I thought only Fox News made these mistakes.

why even bother anymore?

Gonzo1, meet Gonzo2 (ha).
Waxman should subpoena Gonzo2 as well as Fitzgerald's documents, and ask him to explain how concealing evidence that might exonerate the pres. and VP from charges of impeachment (see Kucinich's Article XIV) is a worthwhile exercise of Executive Priviledge.
Of course, this might have more than a theoretical interest, if the Democrats were seriously willing to consider impeachment.
As it stands, 'Congressional oversight' is a theoretical term, which corresponds to nothing in the known universe.

"he informed Fitzgerald that the DOJ has until July 3rd to release the requested documents"

And after that he will spend more of our tax dollars and time to write another letter.

I have absolutely nothing against Waxman. I am, however extremely disheartened at the steady slide our congress has gotten into these past thirty or so years.

Both democrat and republican cpngresses have had ample opportunity to become the branch our forefathers set up. Instead, the congresses no longer feel the need to declare war before giving funds to presidents. the members don't even feel the need to investigate before acting. Members now spend their time (and our money) complying with the executive branch... after which they blame the executive branch for misacting.

None of these congresses have felt the need to pass laws stopping the unnecessary deaths and destruction of millions of people... their own power is MUCH more important than a few hundreds of thousands (or millions) of unimportant peons...

Actually... yes I DO blame Waxman... along with the rest of those clowns who have, over the years, gotten us to this point..

Congress seems to have blown their wad by giving away their rights as well as the rights of the Ameriacn people, otherwise they would have some recourse to uphold the Constitution. When you can't catch a criminal with the help of five hundred lawyers in congress our Constitution may be forever lost.
Law, lawyers, justice, what the hell are they, anyway?

Waxman is NOT a Republican. The man has some integrity - unlike those . . .

The stonewalling of any and every effort of this Congress' efforts to exercise it's constitutional duties by the Bush Administration and it's toadies has been painful to watch. Maybe they will finally get the hint that the only way they're going to get ANYTHING is to use the bare-knuckled approach. Start the impeachment of Mukasey or send over the marshalls and arrest his sorry ass for Christ's sake if he doesn't respond to a lawful request. It's long past time to kick over some freaking tables!!

The liberties of a people never were, nor ever will be, secure when the transactions of their rulers may be concealed from them…Patrick Henry, revolutionary (1736-1799)

Mukasey makes a mockery of Patrick Leahy's naive endorsement of Mukasey.

The proverbial pig in a poke.

If there was justice in the cosmos, Sens. Leahy, Feinstein and Schumer would be hauled up before this summer's Democratic convention, beaten soundly, and forced to explain why they so enthusiastically affirmed this perverse, obstinate jackass.

As it is, down here in our air-filled, water-based netherworld, Mukasey eventually will merit a nauseatingly fawning profile on "60 Minutes," or in The New York Times, about what a stubborn, stick-to-his-guns tough guy he is. It'll be related with that kind of begrudging, confessional tone our liberal press adopts when they pimp a right-wing stooge upholding a corrupt order of which they stealthily approve.

You can have the AG Mukasey arrested. He's not above the law. Why is he refusing to honor a subpoena if not for pure obstructionism. Like I said, without the threat of impeachment behind these investigations, they are meaningless. God I hate Pelosi. Just think of how different things would be now if there were impeachment hearings going on. 7years and $70 million to Ken Starr for bullshit but the dem leaders don't want to take away from "policy making"...like the FISA capitulation. Just Pathetic.

Mukasey and handlers are laughing at their ability to break the law with no consequences.

Send the Congressional Police to arrest Mukasey.

Sidenote: Thank you Obama for telling us that your voice did not matter one way or another on the Mukasey nomination.

Again, lets all send our heartfelt thanks to Schumer and Fienstien for voting "ay" on the appointment of Mukasey for AG as well.
