McClellan to Testify in Congress

Scott McClellan will go to Capitol Hill to testify next week about his allegation that Vice President Cheney "directed" him to lie about who leaked CIA a operative's identity.

From AP:

McClellan's lawyers said he has accepted House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers' invitation to testify June 20. The attorneys said McClellan will appear and be sworn during the proceedings.

McClellan said he was misled by others, possibly including Cheney, about the role of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby in the leak and has said publicly that Bush and Cheney "directed me to go out there and exonerate Scooter Libby."

Let's hope he's still alive on June 20.

If it happens it should be interesting, but I'll believe it when I see it.

I won't be holding my breath, but even if he does testify big deal. So what?

Even if JimmyJeffs "friend" spills all the beans and accuses Cheny/Bush of ordering the burning of our own spy for political reasons, so what.

There will be no punishment. Pelosi, that shining example of honoring the US Contitution has already taken impeachment off the table. The US Justice Dept sure as hell won't do anything.

All this will generate is a lot of VERY NASTY LETTERS and a bunch of sound and fury on the lefty blogs. Big fuckin deal.

There are many reasons why I have become the most cynical man in America.

Bah!!!

Musta got turned down again last weekend...

Getting this stuff out in the sun cannot be bad.

Ten bucks says McClellan makes the Dems look like fools under Repug questioning. Scratch that, bigger fools.
When are they going to impeach?

It is important when McClellan testifies that he be asked specific questions and be made to give specifics of time, place, form and event of the illegal/improper actions he alleges instead of being allowed to make a vague statement of what he observed or heard.

While the traditional media gets all excited every time McClellan opens his mouth he does not seem to provide any specifics. He makes comments and innuendos which get rehashed and discussed at length by blow-dried talking heads who love shiny objects and are too lazy to dig for the gems under the surface.

He needs a severe cross examination by someone on the Committee who is more interested in getting at the truth of this horrible administration than just getting sound bites out of ScottyBoy.

While Scotty might be coming clean after all these years he still has a lot of atoning to do before we accept him back into civilized society. He can start to make up the damage by giving specifics of how Rove, et al, made specific comments, conspired at specific times to do evil, etc. Specifics, please.

Oh this is going to be nice and juicy.

I'm just wondering what bits of info they're waiting for to make their case airtight for impeachment. That has to be why they dragged their feet for so long on the matter.

Dear [],

Our campaign for accountability for the Bush administration is making legitimate progress.

I am pleased to announce to you that the House Judiciary Committee has met my public call for Scott McClellan's immediate testimony with action:

Today, Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers officially invited Mr. McClellan to testify under oath on Friday, June 20th at 10AM.

After all of our hard work pushing for impeachment hearings for Vice President Cheney – the McClellan hearing provides our cause with a legitimate opportunity to showcase the crimes and violations of this Administration for the American people, the mainstream media, reluctant members of the Democratic party, and sensible Republicans. This hearing provides us our first genuine opportunity to enter the public consciousness and change the dynamics that have prevented true accountability for Bush and Cheney.

Mr. McClellan was a major figure in the Valerie Plame/CIA scandal, as well as a leading propagandist for the Bush White House's deliberate attempts to hide the true costs of this war from the American public. As such, Mr. McClellan will testify under oath (and be subject to perjury charges should he lie) and be asked about the following matters:

1. What role did President Bush, Vice President Cheney , and key administration officials take in the effort to reveal the identity of covert CIA agent Valeria Plame Wilson – thus destroying her network and putting lives in jeopardy?
2. What role did President Bush, Vice President Cheney, and key administration officials take regarding the firing of U.S. Attorneys or political reasons?
3. What role did President Bush, Vice President Cheney, key administration officials take in conspiring to blatantly break U.S. and International laws prohibiting the use of torture?

I call on Mr. McClellen to immediately accept this invitation and testify under oath as he previously agreed to while being interviewed on national television.

During the hearing I will have roughly five short minutes to question Mr. McClellan and undercover the illegalities committed by this Administration – which is why it is critically important that every representative on the Judiciary Committee hears your voice. Please let them know that you demand answers to these questions.

Nor should it stop there: Karl Rove has thumbed his nose to the Judiciary Committee's subpoena – joining Harriet Miers, Joshua Bolten and Vice President Cheney's Chief of Staff David Addington as the only Administration officials in history to claim Congress has no power to even bring them before a committee to be questioned.

I have called for Karl Rove to be held in inherent contempt and for the other renegade officials to appear as required by their subpoenas, or be forced to do so by the House Sergeant of Arms.

What the Judiciary's request of McClellan proves is that if we stay vigilant – if we call loudly and repeatedly for accountability - that we become very difficult to ignore.

Please stay tuned. I hope for more developments soon.

With great respect,

Congressman Robert Wexler

Lily Tomlin had it right years ago, and it still holds: "No matter how cynical you get, you can't keep up."

Question for Congressman Wexler...

Sir, is there any precedence for impeaching an elected official AFTER he/she is no longer officiating?

If the president or vice president is not impeached before they leave office, is there any recource for Congress or the Senate... or do all these hearings and investigations just become moot points and historical lessons?

Thanks...

Aaarghhh! Cheney ordered the outing of Plame! That is obvious from the Libby trial and it is a much bigger issue than what he said to McClellan.

Hope Scotty's got bodyguards and a food taster because there's not much I would put past the Cheney junta.

IS anyone watching Kucinich on C-SPAN?

johnny-

not that i know of-just a chance of civil suits brought by individuals...

I have a sneaking suspicion that if it were Dems who got us into Iraq/Plame/etc...the Repugs would have gone after them without much hesitation-esecially if the Dem Pres. had a 28% approval rating. Democrats just seem to lack the killer instinct...

I'm not a lawyer, and certainly not an expert in Constitutional law. Can someone here with more knowledge address that question?

To the best of my knowledge, POTUS and VPOTUS are responsible for crimes committed in office, unless pardoned.
During the term in office, only Congress can address crimes or potential crimes via the impeachment process, but once out of office they are answerable to the normal criminal justice process like any other American.

Is that the case?

Regarding post presidency responsibility unless pardoned.

Maybe Bush can pardon the entire administration for all crimes even before the crimes are known. Retroactive immunity so that future administrations can protect the country without the fear of lawsuits which only benefit greedy trial attorneys.

Laws are such a hindrance when it comes to the never ending struggle to protect the country from terr-ists.
