Mukasey: Department Will Follow Recommendations of OIG
Following the Inspector General's report on bias in the Justice Department hiring process, and John Conyers (D-MI)'s call to action, Attorney General Michael Mukasey has issued a statement accepting all of the recommendations from the OIG:
I appreciate the hard work and collaboration of the Department's Office of Professional Responsibility and Office of Inspector General on this report. The Department overhauled its Honors Program and Summer Law Intern Program hiring processes last year, and I am pleased that the report remarked positively on these institutional changes.I have also made clear, and will continue to make clear, that the consideration of political affiliations in the hiring of career Department employees is impermissible and unacceptable. The joint report issued today contains additional recommendations aimed at ensuring that political and ideological affiliations are not inappropriately used to evaluate candidates for these programs; I accept, and have directed the implementation, of all of those recommendations.

So I guess Mr. Conyers can exhale now.
But I didn't see anything in Mukasey's remarks about putting people in jail over this. They broke the law; it's his job to put them in jail.
Let's get to it!

So, what about throwing out the improper hires? Or at least putting a note in their personnel file that they got their start as a result of ideological affirmative action?
Nah, I didn't think so...

The problem is that the new hires weren't "improperly" hired -- it's that others were improperly excluded from consideration. Still, it's worth putting it in some perspective: A large percentage of DOJ attorneys stay for less than five years. Many of those who were hired are probably already gone, or never actually became permanent hires.
The more important step would be to reach out to those who were improperly excluded to see if they would still be interested, and placing them in appropriate positions.
Also, if we do get a Democratic administration, many true political types simply won't be able to stomach the change in policies and will self-select out of the agency.

He'll delay and stall and make excuses and never really get anything done. He has to SAY he'll do something - but he won't.

Let everyone hired during Bush II -- politics notwithstanding -- resign and reapply. ASAP, so Mukasey has a chance to keep his word.

Mukasey is part of the problem, in fact. He wouldn't have the spot in the first place if he didn't meet with Cheney's approval. He's just riding the foam onto the sand; the wave broke a long time ago.
