NEW FISA LAW PASSED
No surprises. The House has passed a new federal surveillance law. It's expected to go to the Senate next week and on to the President for a signature.
The final vote was 293 for, 129 against.
A big win for AT&T and Verizon.
Meanwhile, the House Judiciary Committee is getting underway again with the Scott McClellan hearing.

FISA OVERHAUL PASSED:
Washington Post - front-page story -
"The agreement extends the government's ability to eavesdrop on espionage and terrorism suspects while effectively providing a legal escape hatch for AT&T, Verizon Communications and other telecom firms. They face more than 40 lawsuits that allege they violated customers' privacy rights by helping the government conduct a warrantless spying program after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
My Q: how many of those firms are in the districts (bigtime) of Pelosi and others? There is lots of money at play here, bet on that aspect, too!
I'm madder than a wet hen. As I said, if I win my seat, I'll go to the House and scream every single day - Pelosi, et al have to be replaced, period.

That in itself is just awesome. Now you have the yellow dog Democrats bending to your will yet again and giving you everything you asked for in the new FISA bill. Nicely edited with new terminology so they can pretend it is somehow different of course but still the same bill you asked for. You two are great and no worries about a fight from Obama as he will probably just vote "present" like he always does on any bill of controversy. Hillary of course will always vote with Bush so this is in the bag. Go you twin gods of political power and leave the gates open for Grandpa McCain to keep the good times, for the rich, rolling.

That's what fear does. The Dems are so afraid of being blamed for the next terrorist attack and being slammed by Fox, CNN, Bush and the GOP that they cave.
Never mind that there's technology that can undermine any attempts to snoop on communications. Steganography, the hiding of data in the pixels of images is impossible to detect in the vast volume of data passing through the internet, so the EvilDoers would use it.
The government snooping is still effective in text and there are no guarantees that it wouldn't be used to spy on political opponents.
Since EVERYTHING has a political angle with the Bushies, it's not a stretch to see how they would use the new snooping for their political advantage.

I don't know WHERE Obama is but when he does make an appearance he had better be advocating a third Party status at this point in TIME. I've noticed that he has admassed all the 527's, a sort of power - is Obama going to take us in a new direction?
Because I am not interested in cheap excuses - having said nothing all this time - Obama better have some very fancy footwork of the third party kind to even be worth spit right now.
There isn't just one bad apple in the Dem Party but a WHOLE bunch a bad actors and so we just need to throw out the whole bushel - ALL I want to hear is the words third Party and that's all I want to hear. NO cheap BS. I just can't take it anymore.

I recommend you stop obsessing over the prospect of Obama leaving the Democrats and forming a third party. Answer: Not gonna happen. He is the Democratic nominee for president. If he left the party he'd then have to go up against Clinton (again) AND McCain.
I'm pretty upset about this too but settle down and stop acting like it's Obama's job to swoop in and save the day. I expect him to make a statement reiterating his opposition to immunity for the telecoms and illegal wiretapping (expected it yesterday) but outside of that, I don't expect he'll be able to do much else other than rally more opposition from other Dems.

These forums are great - and I love them and I get all wound up like the next guy, but unless those with the anger can work in such a way that it translates into action (to replace those now in office with fresh people), then means nothing. Example: Obama seems to be the "one" for massive change, yet he backpedals on public campaign financing ... that IS NOT change. Not one bit. He may well end up like the others. With that in mind, that corrupts us all even standing with or by Obama types proves false and fleeting.
We need a strong, grass roots third party - not one owned by any millionaire or worse, insiders, but one that is owned by those angry, upset and frustrated with the current two-party system... Vets, Seniors and young folks who feel left out and betrayed like on this FISA vote...
This is a huge, huge issue if our basic foundation is to remain stable - right now it is shakey. I sense a "I'm for me," and not an "one for all" attitude with those in office.
I'm going to try and make a difference
June 20, 2008 2:01 PM | Reply | Permalink
Hey, Dan.
I agree with you to a large degree, but I have to take exception to your conclusion that Obama has "backpedal[ed] on public campaing financing".
Perhaps I'm being naive, but I think Obama is positioning himself to make real reforms to election finance law after he gets elected. The goal (keep in mind) is to eliminate the influence of big corporate money on campaigns and (therefore) the actions of elected officials.
Obama knows he needs a lot of money to win. (He's not stupid.) So he's opted out of public financing as it is currently defined, because he can raise more money from individuals (like you and me).
But Obama has also sworn off taking or using (through 527s) the "soft money" from big corporations. This is key. No one will be able to throw stones at him when he seeks to reform election finance laws and eliminate the influence of corporations.
I don't think Obama is suddenly against public financing. I think he's just opted out of the current system, which does not work well for him (or for us). That doesn't mean the system can't be fixed for future elections.
Besides, the real key is public financing for Congressional elections.

Re-electing Pelosi must be considered "off the table". Her complicity in facilitating Bush's anti-constitution agenda proves she is more interested in retaining her inside-the-beltway power than doing what's right. No wonder Bush praised Pelosi so highly when he introduced her and sang her praises, several times, following the 2006 elections.
Does anyone besides me feel the need to wear knee-high boots?

Well, this version of the bill will still have to be passed by the Senate. So that may give Obama the opportunity to articulate a position against this bill -- or, at the very least, vote "no" on it.
Of course, the Senate already passed a version of a bill with telco immunity, so I'm not holding my breath that they'll stop this train.
So I agree with you that Obama needs to weigh in on this issue. I just think he will wait until the Senate debates the bill.
I'd love to see Obama and Feingold and a few others filibuster the heck out of this and stop it from passing. But, as I said, I'm not holding my breath.

josephcast, and all the other PO'd Democrats, remember two things:
First, the Dem vote was 105 for, 128 against, so most voted the right way. I too am distressed by the size of the minority voting for, but I take some comfort in that it was a minority.
Second, that minority isn't all Democrats. Hoyer and Pelosi aren't the Democratic Party. josephcast, you, me, and Keith Ellison are the Democrats. We just have further to go in taking over the party than we thought. Keith is trying to get out another 20,000 votes in our district even though he's a heavy favorite for reelection. I doorknocked last Saturday. Let's help him get there, since that 20,000 will be felt all along the ballot, and will give him more influence with his colleagues. Better to register the voter than to curse the darkness.

So, a couple weeks back Rep Ike Skelton of MO endorsed Clinton, and even though I am a dyed-in-the-wool Obama supporter, I stuck up for the man, saying that he is a good congressman for his district and that Sen Clinton should by honored for his support.
Can I take that all back now? Anyone who voted for this abomination is dead to me (that goes for you too, Claire McCaskill; don't think that your support for Obama will make me forgive your role in this treachery). Skelton voted for it, and that makes him a low down skunk. I take that back, I would not wish to demean skunks with that comparison.
Meanwhile, however, I will express my gratitude and admiration for our two fine democratic congressmen from St Louis, Reps Lacy Clay and Russ Carnahan, who voted the right way despite the republican fear-mongering campaigns. Dear Parent55,
Thank you for contacting Obama for America about the proposed legislation to give phone companies legal immunity for past wiretapping. Senator Obama holds strong opposition to this special interest provision is frustrated that the President and his supporters in Congress continue to push it. This fight is just one more example of why things in Washington must change.
Senator Obama has consistently opposed this Administration's efforts to use debates about our national security to expand its own power, whether that was in regard to the conduct of the Iraq war or its restrictions on our civil liberties through domestic surveillance programs or suspension of habeas corpus. It is time to restore oversight and accountability in the FISA program, and rejecting this unprecedented grant of retroactive immunity is a good place to start.
Giving retroactive immunity to telecom companies is simply wrong. Thankfully, the most recent effort to pass this legislation at the end of the legislative year failed. Senator Obama unequivocally opposes granting immunity. Senator Obama cosponsored Senator Dodd's proposal in order to remove it from the current FISA bill.
This Administration has put forward a false choice between the liberties we cherish and the security we demand. When Senator Obama is president, there will be no more illegal wire-tapping of American citizens; no more national security letters to spy on citizens who are not suspected of a crime; no more tracking citizens who do nothing more than protest a misguided war. Our Constitution works, and so does the FISA court. By working with Congress and respecting our courts, Senator Obama will provide our intelligence and law enforcement agencies with the tools they need to track and take out the terrorists without undermining our Constitution and our freedom.
Thank you again for contacting Obama for America.
Sincerely,
Barack Obama

Now, I realize that Sheehan may not be the strongest politician and her chances to win may be slim to none (I'm not trying to insult Cindy), but a more legitimate candidate may get the message when Sheehan suddenly has a war chest and will decide to not let Pelosi have a free ride.
