Today's Must Read

A convicted hedge fund manager, set to start his 20-year prison term next week, disappeared into the night, in what investigators suspect is a faked suicide.

The Wall Street Journal reports this morning that Samuel Israel III, the former chief of Bayou Management LLC, disappeared on Tuesday. His car was found near Bear Mountain Bridge over Hudson River, with an enigmatic message written in dust on his car: "suicide is painless."

Despite the ominous note, no body has been recovered and no witnesses saw anyone jump from the bridge:

[Bruce] Cuccia, [a New York state police investigator] said that, since 1980, more than 40 people have jumped to their deaths from the bridge, which marks one of the deepest points of the Hudson River. He said it would be impossible to survive the 150-foot fall.

The bodies of almost all jumpers are found quickly, Mr. Cuccia said. "I will be satisfied in a few days that if the body doesn't come up, he didn't jump," he said.

U.S. Marshalls have taken over the case and launched an international manhunt, a sign that Israel is indeed the latest white-collar criminal to go on the run:

Police in 2006 found one fugitive money manager, Kirk Wright, 37, living in Miami Beach. He had disappeared after his hedge fund collapsed, costing investors $150 million. A federal jury recently found him guilty of defrauding thousands of investors in International Management Associates, including many professional football players.

Mr. Wright had claimed the fund was performing well, when it was actually losing money, and he was spending client's money on jewelry, real estate, cars and a wedding. Over Memorial Day weekend, shortly after being brought to an Atlanta jail, he hanged himself.

In another instance, in January 2006, shortly before being sentenced for stealing at least $27 million from investors, hedge-fund manager Angelo Haligiannis had double-parked his Jeep Cherokee in Manhattan, cut off his ankle monitor and fled. Last fall the 35-year-old was arrested in a luxurious resort on the Greek island of Crete, vacationing with his wife and daughter.

Also last year, Michael Berger, who defrauded clients of his Manhattan Investment Fund, was arrested by Austrian police, driving toward Salzburg five years after he had originally disappeared. Betting that technology and Internet stocks would fall in the late 1990s, Mr. Berger lost roughly $400 million when his hedge fund collapsed in 2000.

If Israel did not in fact jump from the bridge, this will be the second faked suicide attempt for Bayou. Early in the federal investigation, a note was found in the empty offices of the company by a beleaguered investor. The note, penned by Daniel Marino the firm's chief financial officer, began: "This is my suicide note and confession." Marino never attempted suicide.

Police have recently recovered $100 million of the $400 million lost by investors through Bayou. Both Israel and Marino were convicted on fraud charges in 2005 and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Suicide is indeed painless, if you don't actually do it...

Police have recently recovered $100 million of the $400 million lost by investors through Bayou. Both Israel and Marino were convicted on fraud charges in 2005 and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

The AZ Attorney General seized the $100M from a bank account prior to the arrests in 2005. The DOJ subsequently took control of the seized funds.

Israel and Marino pleaded guilty in 2005. Marino was sentenced in January 2008, and Israel in April 2008.

Here's my question: If he was sentenced to 20 years in prison, why the h*ll was he out?

They manacled and perp-walked Seigelman, but the White Collar criminals? "Please, take some time getting your affairs in order."

PEACE

I wish Dubaya would try to fake his own suicide. considering how well he's done everything else in his life he would of course screw that up too and actually kill himself.

All of them, cowards.

Super Jesus

user-pic

that is so funny.

on the other hand I have known "failed suicides" who truly wanted to do it and felt it was just another in a long list of failures.

So sad that some people truly want to die. And others just want to fool the authorities and waste a lot of money looking for a body - dead or alive.

user-pic

Just give Bush a bag of pretzels and leave him alone in a room. It's like Russian roulette for the guy.

user-pic

They should be tried for the suicide fraud, and not only sentenced to additional prison time, but also be required to repay the costs to taxpayers of looking for their non-dead bodies.

Just think: if the authorities get into the habit of actually imprisoning white-collar thieves, instead of saying to them, "Sorry to slap you on the wrist," we might be that much closer to doing the same with white-collar criminals named Bushit and Cheney. (But Cheney should be sentenced to hard labor on a Chene gang.)

Convicted in 2005; start sentence in 2008. Good deal if you can get it.

Great, now I'm going to have the theme from MASH stuck in my head all day. Is it me, or can only some one faking a suicide write "suicide is painless" just before "jumping"?

considering the result of the events in MASH, his dust note might be a huge clue. i hope that makes sense - i didn't want to put spoilers in for the two poor souls in the world who haven't seen the movie yet. what are you waiting for?!

Maybe he's taking up residence in Robert Vesco's evacuated digs in Cuba.

user-pic

He's probably drinking beers with Ken Lay and Whitey Bulger as we speak.

Ken Lay is (verifiably) dead. I don't think he's drinking much of anything.

user-pic

I'm not sure how verifiable Lay's death is. I think he's dead, but it's not crazy to wonder if someone with that much money could fake a convenient death effectively, especially with how corrupt the DOJ is under Bush.

user-pic

Ken Lay is hanging with Osama bin Laden in a plush spider hole in Dubai.

Faking a death in a public hospital, even a small public hospital, in this day and age, would have to be extremely difficult. The process involves so many people that I'd call it "practically impossible", especially if you're a high-profile person. Somebody would have blabbed.

user-pic

Well, I would of course assume there was a real body. The question is whether the body was Lay. I agree it's unlikely.

user-pic

I used to cross that bridge all the time, right down the river from an army base and a nuclear power plant.

Conclusion, the man is obviously a terr'ist.

user-pic

Last seen giving someone a fist jab!

Another argument for housing white-collar criminals with blue-collar criminals. The system would never give a blue-collar criminal a 3yr gap between conviction & sentence. Justice is supposed to be swift & sure for all. This Upstairs/Downstairs system we have is disgraceful in its disparities.

He's probably just a big M.A.S.H. fan.

user-pic

was arrested by Austrian police, driving toward Salzburg five years after he had originally disappeared.

Salzburg! Lovely Salzburg!
Where the flying fishes play!

Suicide is painless--it brings on many changes--reminds us of the way we used to be...

On another note, is this like the "death" and immediate cremation of Ken Lay in Aspen ?

Why are guys who have very likely stashed away tens of millions, if not hundreds of millions, of dollars ever let out on bail?

A completely inept DOJ, that's what.

user-pic

The Sheriff is mistaken when he says "no one could survive the 150 foot fall". People have survived jumping off the Golden Gate, which is 220 feet high. Some with only minor injuries.

user-pic

Really, when you think about it, where else would you go:

"In Salzburg by the sea,
Where love and laughter live eternally.
In Salzburg by the hill,
Where gondolas go gliding by the mill

Tropical nights

Festival lights

Strudel for two at the midnight bull fights.

Arriba!

In Salzburg, Lovely Salzburg
Where the flying fishes play
Where the schnitzel is high as an elephant's eyes
And the skies are not cloudy all day.
Come to Salzburg with me...
(spoken) Liebchen!
By the sea!

O-le!

In Salzburg by the sea
Where all the worlds in love with gay Paree
In Salzburg on the shore
Where Geisha girls keep coming back for more

We'll live in style

Gold by the pile

Goulash for two as we barge down the Nile.
In Salzburg, Lovely Salzburg
Where the corn and 'taters grow.
In our sweet home sweet home all the roads lead to Rome,
So, my darling,
Let's hurry and go!

Come to Salzburg with me
Liebchen!
By the sea.
O-le"

user-pic

Sehr gut! Sehr gut!!!

"...and I can take or leave it as I choose..."

user-pic

BBpdx has a great question about why these creeps are out on bail. These guys should be treated just like the robbers they are.
The song that comes to mind for me is "Suicide Chump," wherein the singer encourages,"well you better get it right the first time,
cause nobody likes a suicide chump."

user-pic

The Sheriff is mistaken when he says "no one could survive the 150 foot fall". People have survived jumping off the Golden Gate, which is 220 feet high. Some with only minor injuries.

There may be other factors like the depth of the water in play here.

user-pic

What would water depth have to do with it? The water BENEATH you has no effect whatsoever. Only if the water were SHALLOW would it make a difference - but the water here is the deepest in the entire hudson River.

user-pic

The song I want to hear is from the same musical. It became a standard. It's called "The Party's Over".

user-pic

'Impossible to survive the 150 foot fall...."

Really?

Tell that to the 50+ who have survived the over 200-foot fall from the Golden Gate Bridge.

user-pic

This is NY, if you are still breathing when you hit the water the complimentary cement shoes take care of the rest.

user-pic

ooohhhh... Look at the Shiny Object!!!

Fake Suicide!!!

Hedge Funds!!!

Lots & Lots & Lots of Glamorous Money!!!

btw... even though Josh cringes at the thought...
35 Articles of Impeachment for George Bush were read in Congress by Rep. Kucinich.

Why no reportage on this on TPM???

Why?

Fink Kenny Boy (Enron) Lay, and you will find Sam Israel. They are probably both down in Paraguay on Dubya's 99,000 acre "ranch" and waiting for his last day in office when he will issue full pardons for both of them.

But they took his passport...

user-pic

He don't need no stinking passport.
