Suicide Really Is Painless for Convicted Hedge Fund Manager

Last week, we wrote about Samuel Israel III, the former hedge fund manager sentenced to a 20-year prison sentence for fleecing his clients out of $400 million.

At first, authorities thought Israel may have committed suicide when he disappeared on June 10, just days before the start of his prison term. They found his car near Bear Mountain Bridge with the words, "suicide is painless" scrawled in the dust on the hood.

But the enigmatic quip, the title of the theme song from the hit TV series M*A*S*H, was just part of a ruse to avoid incarceration, though authorities did not state why they had ruled out suicide.

From the AP:

U.S. Marshal Joseph Guccione said Monday that investigators now consider the case of Samuel Israel III to be solely a fugitive investigation.

. . . Federal marshals issued a wanted poster Thursday for the man convicted of cheating investors out of $450 million in his Bayou hedge funds. They said he should be considered armed and dangerous.

I think a good chance exists that he is dead and it was not suicide. He lost a lot of money for a lot of folks, some of which do not like losing money at all and have ways to equalize their losses.

But the Judge took his passport...

You can walk into Mexico without showing a passport.

I think there's a better chance that he's fleeing to another country.

I think he may still be alive but some modern day Ving Rhymes is getting medieval on his ass well beyond what one might see at Gitmo or some CIA black site.

I think MASH had a pretty good TV good theme song.

Passport or not, if I stole a half-billion dollars and wanted to get gone--I'd get gone.

Broke people can flee. If I had that kind of money, I would flee in style.

Be careful posting excerpts from AP stories! (Unless you're paying for it, of course)

Hmm. Bayou hedge funds. Sounds like a swamp full of alligators.

The FBI was real quick to rule out suicide. My guess is he has left a money trail. What I don't understand is armed and dangerous. The guy is a hedge fund manager. He steals with a pen, not with a gun. I have a hunch there is a whole lot more to this story than the AP is reporting.

Oh, if you made off with 1/2 billion, do you think that maybe you could buy a forged passport some place.

With that kind of money and that kind of sentence, the guy always was a flight risk. That some judge let him out on bail prior to going to prison must have some prosecutor's or judge's ass in a sling right about now.

Samuel Israel is jewish and his family is from New Orleans originally. Although I have read that he converted to christianity or something.

Anyways, maybe he got an Israeli passport or something and now he's long gone.

Dammit my passport comment was snark.

I thought it was, but apparently some Federal judge didn't think.

Oh, the FBI had recovered 100 million, leaving about 350 million unaccounted. Let's assume the guy lived high and wide, and spent 100 million on personal lifestyle prior to getting caught, that would leave 250,000,000 in a Swiss bank account or two. More than enough money to cover a get away to a nice life some place.

People, please refer to the soundtrack from the movie, not the theme song from the TV series. The TV series never played the lyrics in question. Robert Altman would be appalled.

if i had half a BILLION, i might not be armed and dangerous, but i would certainly hire some armed and dangerous... perhaps this is what is meant?

To elaborate on cfb's request, Altman hated the TV series. The series producers didn't use the lyrics to the song, so they wouldn't have to pay Altman any royalties, as he wrote the lyrics, not the music.

In any event, the movie (especially the cast) far outclasses the TV show.

I just don't get the greed factor in life. This guy undoubtedly made some money in his life without breaking the law. Was it not enough? Did he think he could make hundreds of millions of dollars disappear and no one would notice? What exactly was
so necessary in his life to try and steal almost half a billion dollars? More cars? More homes? More $100K watches?

Too much money really is like a drug for some people. You just want more, even if you already have more than you could ever spend in ten lifetimes.

The problem with "master criminals" like Mr Israel is that they are too clever by half. As soon as I read about the "Suicide is painless" note, I knew he had faked it to get away.

In the movie, M*A*S*H, that song is featured in a scene where a depressed John Schuck decides to commit suicide and is helped by Hawkeye, et al. The suicide is faked by giving him a sleeping pill. The next morning we see the alleged suicide alive and well and going about his business.

I have no doubt that Israel thought he was being clever and/or sending a message with that note. Perhaps next time he should read a few back issues of Detective Comics and lift some ideas from The Riddler.

I've read that actually it was Altman's son, age 14 at the time, who wrote the lyrics. Google just got me a lot of attributions to "Johnny Mandel and Mike Altman," supporting that theory.

We used to sing that song at summer camp. Alternating with "One Tin Soldier." But I am dating myself.

Oh while we're at it, the John Schuck character, who is called the "Painless Pole," wakes up with a blue ribbon tied to, you get the idea here, and cheers back up because wherever he was, he won first prize. The joke isn't original to the movie or for that matter the book -- lots of versions involving a Scotsman and his kilt -- but AFAIK this is the only one that has a theme song attached. And yes, they did allow 15-year-old girls to sing this song at summer camp. Among other things.

I wonder if he's dining out with Ken Lay.

FATE, KARMA and FREE WILL

As is commonly known in Metaphysical circles, all future events are governed by 3 principals: Fate, Karma and Free Will.

Fate is something that is more or less set in stone. It is not negotiable. Fate is what many religious people would refer to as “God’s Will” since they perceive God’s will to be separate from their own. They often fail to see that they are extensions of the Divine - manifestations of the God within.

For a Psychic, Fate is the easiest thing for us to read. However, when hired to perform metaphysical services, Fate is unbendable.

Karma is a whole other matter entirely. Karma, contraray to recent popular belief, has little or nothing to do with morality. Rather, Karma is simply the Universal Law of cause and effect. Whatsoever you project into the Universe will be reflected right back at you.

Because the life of a Soul extends beyond the continuous cycle of physical birth and death, actions and their subsequent consequences follow you from one lifetime to the next. From a Psychic’s point of view, Karma is a often a pattern - and a rather predictable one at that. A good Psychic Advisor will understand Karmic patterns and will be able to help you to change these cycles to your advantage.

It cannot be overemphasized the importance of achieving and maintaining good Karma for leading a happy, healthy and productive life. Your Karma is like your engine - keep it clean and keep it running strong.

Bad Karma is one of the worst curses a being can endure. If you find that this is your problem, I would urge you to address it now before the cycle gets worse.
Karma is a powerful force in the trajectory of your life. Getting your Karma right is of the upmost importance in changing negative patterns and living a healthy spiritual life filled with the abundance of all that is good, positive and fulfilling.
So I’ve briefly covered Fate and Karma, but what about Free Will?

Free Will:

There are essentially two types of consciousness - Individual and Collective. The Collective is greater than the sum of all Indivial Consciousnesses. The Individual consciousness emmanates from the Collective. It is supported by the Collective, but it also informs the Collective.

What does this mean? In other words, your own state of mind affects the world around you. You have a huge amount of influence.

Although recent phenomenon in pop culture such as “The Secret” tends to exagerrate, over-simplify and become fixated on greed as the meaning of life - the main thrust, the underlying fundamental idea is actually correct. The Law of Attraction. The power of the mind, i.e. “Free Will” is so much greater than most people will ever know.

Your thoughts not only affect how you perceive reality, but how you actually create reality. Life is subject to certain factors which are outside of your control. There are Laws to the Universe. There are ways that the planet seems to be structured which are often inalterable.

But even so, the power of your mind is so potent that, in spite of so many factors and forces of opposition, you truly are The Master of Your Own Destiny.

My wife and I invested in Bayou in 2004 based upon the recommendation of John Ellis on his blog entry of "Year's Best" posted on 12-30-2003 ("Best Hedge Fund: Bayou").

Ellis is a journalist and a cousin of George W. Bush so I suppose we should have known better.

Here's the target="_blank"> link to Ellis' blog for the last week of 2003.

Gee the last time I was up north and wanted to get into Canada without my passport I had to take the bold and courages move of walking across someones yard. Border insecurity?

I wonder if the bounty on his head is "Dead or Alive"? Dead people are so much easier to bring in. Especially if you don't have to bring them in whole.

Why was he free (one presumes on bail) prior to sentencing? Someone who steals $450 million has probably stashed some of that. Holding his passport would have as much effect as asking nicely.

The double standard of 'justice' frees guilty rich white guys, but sends poor, innocent black men to death row.
