Conyers Committee To Vote on Rove Contempt
The House Judiciary Committee's ongoing battle with Karl Rove continues today, with a vote on holding the former White House Chief of Staff in contempt.
Rove has refused to answer to a subpoena to testify before Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) committee, answering only in writing to questions from the minority representation of the HJC.
The vote is the first thing on the committee's agenda for their meeting today which starts at 10:15 AM ET. Be sure to check back for updates on the outcome of the proceedings.

Any bets here? My bet is that Rep. Conyers will condemn Rove but no arrests from Conyers. He hasn't done it yet from the others so what would make him do it now. I'd love to be wrong but.....

Conyers is doing his schtick again. I expect an email begging for money any moment now
As for actually DOING anything? Nope. Not gonna happen. Conyers will get some facetime in the news to make the rubes back home in Michigan think he's actually doing something.
Again I say: if anything comes of this, outside of an ignored sternly worded letter, I will eat a hat.

That's the ticket. A strongly worded letter should do it. Maybe even a dreaded verbal warning.
All this is going to get him a pay raise at FOX news.

It's been all talk and no walk with Rep. Conyers for nearly two years, with a preponderance of bluster and no substantive action; so, why does anyone still give this character, the Arnold Specter of the House, the time of day? But, of course, we'd all like to be wrong on this......

Big fucking deal... if they were actually serious, the Dems would have voted a Contempt citation many months ago. Nobody on the Dem side has the balls or the inclination to do a damn thing. They know it, Rove knows it, and they know Rove knows it. It's all an elaborate Kabuki dance by Conyers & Co. to create the illusion that they're "doing something."
In the end, they'll clasp their hands to their mortified bosoms and declare how seriously miffed they are at what a bad boy Karl has been, and how they wish he would wash his hands and face before sitting down at the dinner table. Then they'll retire to the parlor to fan themselves, muttering.

All talk, no action. Conyers just takes up time talking so other ills can be conducted while the people are absorbed by promises of justice. I believe the base to the problem is called PELOSI.

Why bother? We all know what the result is going to be. A sternly worded letter. That's it.
I have better things to do: my nose, for example, needs picking.

This is a definding momemt--the rule of law must be upheld. Karl Rove is not above the law.

With bigger majorities in both houses and a Dem president in 2009 I wonder if Dems are laying the groundwork for stronger oversight next year. This year I don't see Conyers, Waxman and Leahy or anybody else doing much more now than they already have but a collection of contempt of congress citations and ignored subpoenas might give Dems a stronger hand in writing better law forcing future executive branch compliance.
When you look each case where Bush's people stonewalled congress the last two years taken to it's logical conclusion they'd wind up in court where the Supremes have already said once they won't rule on "political" disputes between the two branches and threw it back in congress's face. Frustrating for us but that's what 28 years of Republican judge appointments and Republican approved Clinton appointments have given us.
Dems won't waste time in this congress pushing stronger legislation because Repubs would use the filibuster for a record 81st time but if we get a
filibuster proof majority in the Senate or have enough evidence to shame some Repub senators Dems might have enough mojo to get legislation thru next year.
Keep in mind it'll be every man for himself in what's left of the Repub caucus in 2009 after we sink their battleship. There aren't gonna be many of them willing to stand up in their lifeboats for the corrupt and discredited Bushies once they're out of power when Bush can't pay 'em off or punish them any longer.
That doesn't necessarily mean we're gonna see a boatload of indictments for past crimes next year. There's too much that needs fixing. But we might see the oversight function strengthened and that will help to make sure another imperial presidency never again raises it's ugly head.
Just as Rove destroyed his own dream of perpetual Repub political dominance Cheney has destroyed his dream of the unitary executive.
That may not satisfy us when they ought to be in prison but killing those twin dreams is the more important goal.
