OPR Reaches Out to Siegelman's Camp for Assistance in Investigation
The Justice Department's Office of Professional Responsibility reached out for the first time to the Don Siegelman camp on Monday, asking in a letter to Siegelman's attorney for "information and documents that would assist" them in investigation the allegations that the "selective and politically motivated" prosecution of the former Alabama governor.
Vince Kilborn, Siegelman's attorney, said that he would take the OPRs request for assistance as an opportunity to focus on the reasons behind U.S. Attorney Leura Canary's recusal of herself from the case.
From the AP:
[Kilborn] wants a Justice Department review of the prosecution of former Gov. Don Siegelman to focus partly on the reasons a federal prosecutor in Montgomery stepped aside from the case.. . .Kilborn said the office, an arm of the Justice Department, should seek documents regarding a decision by U.S. Attorney Leura Canary -- a GOP appointee -- to recuse herself from the prosecution of Siegelman, a Democrat. Canary's husband, William, leads the Business Council of Alabama and has been a Republican political consultant.
A copy of the OPR's letter to Kilborn is here.

Sigelman, Wecht, pretty soon it is real people we're talking about.

I wouldn't provide anything to the OPR that could be used by the DOJ or Rove to defend against charges of the political prosecution of Siegelman or of the political firings of United States Attorneys. Trusting anyone under the thumb of the Bush administation would the height of stupidity.

What osage said - first you'd have to believe that OPR in its current (past 6+ years worth) incarnation is anything but another avenue for covering up and protecting Executive Branch criminal activity. For now, there's certainly no evidence that OPR is any less corrupt than the rest of the torture solicitors and FISA felons that spread through the halls of main justice like malignant tumors.

I agree with Osage and Mary2002, I wouldn't give those people a damn thing. This justice department is still tainted and corrupted by Rovian policies, and he probably is still in contact with these criminals. Just last night in the headlines, you had the AP DC chief having a cozy email relationship with Rove. Now do you really think Rove isn't cozy with the criminal enterprise that he set up in Justice? Give them NOTHING!

Of course, if you give them nothing, that just fuels their story that they're the honest ones being subjected to a partisan witch hunt.

Right, give them what they want after making sure you have 10 witnesses to what the actual information said, then choose five or six people who could give an affidavit attesting that they have a copy of the information that was furnished. Never trust this loose canon justice department would be my motto. Also get a Protestant minister, a Catholic Priest and an agnostic to verify what was sent. Take the info to the local FBI unit and have them sign YOUR copy attesting to what was in the information. then and only then would I even consider trusting this Bush Justice Department. I would give the info just to give Rove a big heartburn.
